Welcome back! Today is the first video of a series I will be calling "How and Why to become...." In this series I plan on sitting down with health care professionals in many different areas of medicine. The goal is to shed light on different professions within the health care field to educate others.
I sat down with a good friend of mine Dr. Vinay Thomas. He is a Co-Chief Medical resident and will be starting his Hematology / Oncology Fellowship at the University of Utah in July 2021. Dr. Thomas explains exactly what Hematology and Oncology is! He explains exciting advancements in the field! And breaks down exactly what it takes to become a practicing Oncologist. Plus much much more!

So, I'm a current MS3 and am rotating in NYC and I just wanted to take a moment to say that I've been so inspired by this video today! I'd never really considered Heme-Onc before today. And I just want to say that the way Dr. Vinay spoke about Heme-Onc and how passionately he spoke about it, made me want to go into it and now that's very, very powerful. To Dr Vinay, Thank you. I had the same notion about H/Onc being a sad branch, but like Dr. Vinay mentioned you got to find your niche, there is a lot we can do to help those patients during their most stressful times of life. Would love to watch a video cardiology.

Hey! I would start by excelling in college and then medical school. Once you get into your clinical rotations then you can seek out a Heme/Onc mentor with an attending you rotate with. But for now I would definitely focus on doing well in school. That will give you the best shot possible to get into medical school
