Being black is not a nationality, so if you´re black, it doesnt mean you have to speak english only, you can learn as many languages as you can. I´m dominican, and obviously I speak spanish, I´m also black, but I decided to learn english and now I started learning french.

This is so true! Learning Spanish came natural to me tbh. When I started learning Spanish my family joked a lot about me wanting to be Mexican. Then I started ordering my food in Spanish and they got used to it. I moved to Florida and they came to visit me at work. Majority of my clients were Spanish and my fam was in awe to see me communicate with people in Spanish as if it was my native tongue! Never let anyone deter you from your goals! Soy un afroamericano que puede hablar escribir y leer español. No soy correcto 100% del tiempo pero me sigo aprendiendo todos los días.

@@bigtaskat-hand4742 NICE!!! To give you more insight. when I used the phrase “ me sigo aprendiendo todos los días” the direct translation would be “I continue learning everyday”. Even I had doubts continuing Spanish bcuz I just had bad experiences with certain Spanish speakers but I try to keep an open mind and understand that not all of them act in a certain way. I had to remind myself why Im learning this and it's cuz I have a goal of learning different languges. It's almost a year now and sometimes I catch my aunt even jamming Spanish music and my mom asking me why I "stopped" when i take a mentalbreaks. Im filipino btw.

I never thought about this much, but now seeing your video makes me realize that a lot of that did happen to me with my parents and friends. Parents started with telling me Im wasting my time, then my Dad caught me watching novelas in my room with a notepad (writing vocabulary I didn't know yet) and he was not happy. A friend told me, "Learn from me, dont commit the same mistakes as me. I went thru this whole phase youre going thru, I thought I wanted to be Mexican too, but trust me, you're NOT Mexican and this is just a phase, you should just be who you are." Well, 16+ years later, I never expected this but now Ive been married for 12 years to my husband who's from Mexico and speaks only Spanish (he's had a chronic illness so we've focused on survival instead of being free to focus on him learning English with me). 95% of my daily life is in Spanish. I think in my head in Spanish, thinking out how Im going to say such and such to so and so, and then realize "Oops, wait, I don't need to be planning in Spanish to be talking to my dad today." 😅 Fun video, thanks!

This happened to me alot when I started taking spanish seriously. Most of my trouble came at school. My story is a bit weird in that biologically I am mixed. My grandfather on my mom’s side was dominican, but I only met him when I was a baby after that, not at all. I found out more about him while in high school when I started taking it seriously so I had even more motivation. People in my Pre Ap Spanish 3 class always made fun of me 😂😂 especially some of the mexicans(prolly just jealous but it’s all love) I was the best student in both Spanish 3 and AP Spanish 4 and always got called a tryhard (but they were asking me for help on their homework🤦🏽‍♂️) As far as at home, definitely had some of the same things. Diablo 😂😂

They say my music sounds like carnival music (listening to banda) & they’re always like “do you even know what they’re saying?” They also always say they wanna learn but when i try to help them they reject me saying “i don’t speak that” I’m like how you gonna learn if you don’t let me try to show you? 😂🙄 thankfully tho my fam has been extremely supportive of it for the most part. they always say “have you done a dna test yet?? Bc all of that came from somewhere! Idc what anybody says, you got some Mexican in you SOME WHERE” 🤣 turns out ancestry said 2% mexican lol!! & my family was like yup we knew. 💀 but this was spot on. Anytime someone is speaking Spanish some where it’s always “Shelby!!! What did they say??” 😂 but overall my mom brags on me a lot telling everyone that i can speak Spanish & that Ik how to dance the way Mexicans do lol.

Here in California there a lot of folks of Mexican ancestry that do not speak Spanish. My grandparents generation didn't teach their children Spanish in hopes they wouldn't be discriminated against. My grandparents tell stories of being disciplined in school for speaking or translating Spanish. Learning Spanish is still on my bucket list. Speaking a second language can give you an advantage in a job over someone who only speaks one language. Enjoyed the video!

I actually started learning Spanish because my parents would speak it around me as a kid as a type of code, and it would frustrate me that I couldn’t understand them. It’s mainly my extended family that acts some type of way about us speaking Spanish, but we just talk about them (or pretend to talk about them) in Spanish immediately afterward. 🤣🤣🤣

When i was first getting into spanish it was most definitely the first few stages with my family as well as people i went to middle school and high school with. There were times I felt discouraged because it felt like you were not "black enough" or that you were" trying too hard to be hispanic" when in actuality I wanted to go beyond textbook spanish and actually experience the different cultures and how different spanish speakers live outside of what is shown in media. After a while when they see you know so much and can order things and communicate in spanish , then you are "cultured" and finally they start listening to some of the music you listen to and try the foods from other spanish speaking countries that you like to try.

Dang that's messed up. Maybe its regional too tho? Since spanish is pretty regularly spoken in my area no ones had an issue with me learning Spanish. Now I when I tried to learn French my family was exactly like this tho! 😂. My dads side is Black, Cuban/ Creole. I told my dad that I was going to learn french and that man said "why on earth would you do that?! Ain't no one speaking french round here! You better learn that spanish. That's what you need to learn!" I was hard headed but he was right 😂😂😂❤

Got into a political argument with my southern cousin and she told me I should "go back to wherever my dad's family is from", and I said "lol, the US, dipshit" and she's since blocked me on every platform ever.

Sí! Thank you for your channel and videos. I learned Spanish as a teenager bc my best friend is Colombian and i used to hang out at her house where her grandmother didn't speak English. When i started learning Spanish I got some push back from my family also. They would say stuff like, You are not our child, I think someone switched babies with us at the hospital (like a baby knows the parents' language at birth!) They also thought my Colombian music was strange. Then......years later they were proud of me. One of my cousins, my favorite cousin worked 6 hours away in a hospital in Georgia, She called me on 2 different occasions bc she had patients who spoke only Spanish and she wanted me to tell them what the doctor was saying. it was unreal! Thanks again for your channel! You are lo mejor!

Aye bro u just like me fr 😂. You look very Dominican but you African American, and I look very Puerto Rican/Mexican but my parents are from Sicily and Romania. In the last few years since I’ve gotten into high school I’ve gotten really obsessed with the Hispanic culture because at first everyone thought I was Hispanic and I didn’t really correct them all that much when they kept saying it, and a lot of my friends are Latino so when I sit with them I kind of blend in. It has also been very easy for me to learn Spanish (almost fluent now) knowing two other Latin languages and having some Latin American relatives and family friends. Lately specifically this past year, I have become even more obsessed with the culture when I started listening to more Reggaeton music after going in Italy two summers ago. When I got back from my vacation I started listening to more Hispanic music and watching funny skits about Puerto Rican’s and Dominicans. Now I know a lot more about differences between Caribbean Hispanics, South Americans, and Central Americans. I thought I was the only one that had a story like this lmao. Obviously being slightly poorer, more humble, Latin and Southern Europeans my family shares a lot of similarities with Latinos. They’ve started noticing this whole “Hispanic Phase” several months ago. They usually say stuff like “Oh first he wants to be Arab, then he’s Spanish, then he’s black. This guy wants to be everything.” Lmao 😂 But anyways bro I think we very similar and I’m very surprised but glad at the same time that someone has had a smilies experience as me. I don’t know about the whole acceptance part because I don’t think it’s that serious, Atleast not for me, but I’m currently 16 so we’ll see how good I get at this shit later on lol. They know I love cultures and they are cool with they just don’t want me to over do it and believe I’m something that I’m not. I don’t believe that I’m Latino but I do love their culture and recognize similaritieswith my own such as looks, phrases and ways of talking or acting, culture, and language wise. But aye that all man, good video, I really fucks wit your content 👍🏽

This video hits the nail on the head. I remember when I was in high school, and the Spanish bug hit me. I was watching Univision on tv and my mother called me to the dinner table to eat dinner. We were eating dinner for about ten minutes and she said go turn that tv off it’s so annoying. I did not move, then my father said you heard your mother. I was so sad, I don’t know why my parents acted that way. But I kept going after that, started listening to the music and when I went to college I took every Spanish class I could and got great grades. People think I’m Hispanic and I don’t even have to speak. They see my reactions and when I order lunch they give me a side eye... I love ❤️ it
