Your videos are awesome! The Baldwin uprights I service recently didn’t have two holes but a slit on the back of the spring rail. You just bend the tail down 90’ and squeeze it into the slit just narrower than the spring wire. I’d recommend cutting the tail to a length that would not use the entire length of the slit. The next repair job would be easier if the entire length is not eased out unnecessarily (leave some untouched area for a better hold next time using a longer tail.)

The springs on my 1927 Gulbransen upright are also pressed into a slit like that. Thanks for the tip!

Just about to finish ordering a set from you guys. It will be diy on a piano donated to me, upright lester-philly about 1917. Hammer rail is off just looking to see if there is a teqniuqe to removing them or just pull and twist with conviction 😁

My butt spring rail does not have the 2nd hole to pull the tail through. Any recommendations to ensure a secure hold?

can it be done without removing the spring rail? I mean, if it's only one to be replaced, you still have to take the rail out? Thank you soo much!

I don’t know of a way to do this without taking the rail out.

Thank you very much for your excellent video series. How do you know whether or not they need to be replaced?

If the tension of the spring on the hammer butt is weak, they probably need to be replaced.

howardpianoind Thank you for your very fast reply. What I meant was, what problems will one experience with the touch and/or sound if the springs are too weak? Thanks again!

Mr Howard: Did you use any type of solvent to get the old spring rail felt off?
@howardpianoind

I did not. You just need to scrape it off with a utility knife.

HI Howard, 5 springs popped out of the hammer butts on my upright piano (my fault). Do I have to remove the action to put the springs back in?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
No, you should be able to use something to reach back in there to push the spring back into place. I generally use a damper wire regulator.

Do you have tutorial for Asian butt spring? Its look like different from Yamaha butt spring position.Thanks
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 7 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately I don't have a video on replacing the asian style springs. The more common problem with those types of actions is that the cord that holds the spring breaks. When I have this issue, I generally just replace the flange rather than try and glue a new cord on. I find it to be easier.

Do you have a video or any tips on replacing asian style hammer but springs? From pianos without a spring rail. Cheers!
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
Usually there is a cord that holds the spring in. I've never had the opportunity to replace these. Usually it is the string that breaks instead of the spring.

howardpianoind I am working on this old piano from the 1940s (B.squire) which I bought for £20 haha - so far I have found that I need to replace all of the butt springs and bridle straps - miraculously only one of the threads has broken on a hammer butt. I do think the American design makes more sense... For fixing them at least haha

I am about to attempt this repair on a Gulbransen pinafore with some springs I ordered fron you today. I looked through your videos, and didnt see any on how to actually take the hammers off to access the rail, and really dont want to vreak anything that doesnt need fixed.
@howardpianoind

The hammer is attached by a flange, which will be with a screw that is behind the jack. You will have to unhook the bridle strap and take that screw out to remove each hammer.

@@howardpianoind the action was actually way easier to work on than I thought. I didn't end up needing to actually mess with the hammers too much at all really. Pulled up the action and unscrewed the rail that holds the springs, and 20 minutes later I had 3 new springs in. All in all, it took longer to get the keys off and on than it did to replace the actual spring. Thank you for these videos, and for the help, and for the ability to in one place, buy the parts and see how to fix these instruments. It really bothers me seeing gorgeous pianos turned into mini bars, and the more people who can keep them going, the less that will happen. Especially if it's affordable. I'm rambling a bit but, I really do think it's important for people like me, who don't have a lot of money, to have the resources to repair our own instruments, and you provide that.

Only once did I get a complaint from a customer that as a result of replacing those return springs did the action become conspicuously heavier for the teacher's students so I wound removing it. This was in a 19th Century Steinway old upright which didn't even have the rail to begin with.

Yes, replacing the springs can have an affect on the touchweight. If it is too heavy you can adjust the strength of the springs by bending them away from the hammer butt.

Some of the older pianos had butt springs that were much thinner in diameter and have less tension than what is sold. In that case, I wind my own springs out of the same diameter wire.

What an averaged cost for a certified person to replace these springs?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind 6 жыл бұрын
It can vary, but an average price may be around $400 for the set.
@kwixotic
@kwixotic 7 жыл бұрын
I'd only add that since the cost for the wholesale replacement of these springs could very well be more than the value of the piano itself, it's kind of rare that the owners will opt for this kind of procedure. Of course, if money is no object because the piano is a family heirloom with sentimental value then the owner is more predisposed to go for it.
