How To Academy

Күн бұрын

The bestselling author of The School of Life joins us live with an unmissable guide to mental health.
In the world of contemporary philosophy, Alain de Botton occupies a unique place: he is dedicated not to the vagaries of metaphysics but to the practical wisdom we need to live well. He transmutes the wisdom of high art, philosophy and literature - from Schopenhauer to Proust - into witty and humane aperçus that offer consolation and empathy through the trials and tribulations of the everyday.
Now, following his worldwide blockbuster book The School of Life, he joined How To Academy to take us on a mental health journey from crisis to recuperation. He explores the moments we realise we cannot cope; the acts of self-care and therapy in which we find respite, and the days we finally reclaim a sense of stability.
This talk is about getting unwell. About losing direction and hope. About imagining that we have let ourselves and everyone down. And also a talk about getting better, regaining the thread, rediscovering meaning and finding a way back to connection and joy.
Whether you’ve suffered a relationship breakdown, a career setback, anxiety in the everyday, this is a practical guide that will help you find reasons for hope.

I fall in love with this man every time he opens his mouth. He is just so so good from any point of view you look. Funny, exceptionally intelligent, very articulate and most of all - super balanced human being. I would make him ruler of the universe, and I am not joking

@@realbobbyaxel Thank you so much with all my heart! You must see him next time. To tell you I had no clue which topic he was going to venture into, honestly. I was just too excited to see him and be there, but it went beyond my anticipation. He mostly talk about childhood, parenthood and trauma etc etc.. He was witty and made funny remarks🤗 I had googled it a couple months earlier and bought ticket. Hope I’ll see you in his next talk.

What Alain talks about here in such a convincing way is a wonderful key to a less troubled, more flexible and more enlightened life. The world would be so different if this was knowledge more generally 'out there' and if we all understood the significance of challenging the rigid distortions, denials and unwritten rules our childhood left us with!

Thanks for the lecture But Sir, please TURN COMMENTS OFF. There are too many egos who having listened to your enlightening lecture, then immediately feel a need to hijack, copy, paste quotes or give their evaluation blah. blah blah. We all should SHUT UP, and just listen, absorb and go quietly reflect/contemplate upon what was shared. At least before we open our mouths etc.

The problems with this trouvaille of thoughts is that they cannot or nearly cannot be demonstrated to be wrong. It always fits, the story always fits no matter what. If a story cannot be falsified it ceases to be science. It may be art, therapy, philosophy or psychiatry: but it is not science what Alain de Botton is teaching us.

I think de Boton should stay with philosophy. His venture into psychotherapy might seem like the logical next step in his career, but it feels like sleight of hand to me. I wouldn't consult him under any circumstances. Hubris knows no bounds.

He was asked about anger and gave a poor, rambling reply. There needed to be a follow up by the questioner to discuss and clarify but he just moved on to the next questioner. Unfirtunately he is no expert on these matters tho he knows something about them.

Here’s my biggest concern, first off, he recommends therapy every two weeks. My question is for how long? Also at my age that shit is expensive, espescially if I don’t want a run of the mill therapist either. This is hard to actually put into practice, which is his point I know that, but I’m saying practically speaking it’s hard.
