Doc, what a brilliant idea to seed in several stages. I have an area in my front yard with a slight slope and nearly all day sun, and I have been struggling for two years to get a good grow on it. I’ll be using this method in a couple weeks when it gets good and hot.

If you're in a drought, forget praying for rain. Just plant grass seed. Guaranteed to cause a monsoon.

Story of my last summer, we ended up buying sod rolls and it stopped raining for a month, the city gave a no watering order. 😂

Doc, I'm humbled to offer this little bit of knowledge, and, only a little bit of knowledge it is. This I have learned from two different lawns established by two different Old Timers here in North Georgia. If you have to deal with runoff over an expanse or even a planned water shed, centipede works great (just so long as it can get plenty of sun). I have seen Centipede handle planned water shed around the side of a house from a sloping front yard about 90' Long by 60' Deep. In my youth, each year for years, during a heavy rain I watched centipede handle 3"-4" deep water running rapidly over a swath of 4'-5' wide and the entire length of the house's side. Now days, I live where my back yard is practically in a basin. The 1/2 acre back yard receives water from three sides on its journey to Lake Lanier about 250 yards away. This house was built in 1957 and the original owners had the SW facing back yard (banks and basin) sewn in centipede. I have seen so much water shed through my back yard as it flows to the lake that it looks like a flooding creek. THE CENTIPEDE HANDLES IT. From what I can tell, centipede forms a pretty thick thatch, and, because the blades are so hard and thick, the water runs over it like water off a ducks back. The thatch almost acts like a liner between the grass blades and ground thereby protecting the roots that hold the dirt. I'm not sure that is actually whats happening, but Centipede may be a good choice if you have similar areas. As you know, it's also a low maintenance grass, except it does require thatching!

I did my seeding in sections with a little bit of experimenting mixed in ... And ... It looks like a patch work lol. One plot got blasted by hail and then triple digit temps then another had nice cool drizzling days and one looks downright photogenic while the other is basically bare dirt. 😅 So would say stages makes sense. Also something that worked well for me for temperamental grass types is a tiny mix in of annual rye for cover.

By early May I seeded an area that I tilled the weeds out. The rain came and did not exactly washed the seeds out entirely, but I do have clear stripes of now well germinated grass. I have dropped more seeds in that area, so whenever next heavy rain comes by, they will hopefully get stopped by the new grass and will start to develop in the area. But there were areas I failed badly, so yeah, failure is an option.

Do you use any top dressing (soil, peat moss, straw blankets etc…) in any situation? whether it’s bare lawn, over-seeding expiating lawn?

Hey Doc, I think centipede is a great option for the pond berm, I would also recommend bahia, it is very hardy and drought tolerant. Also it would be cool if you did a seeding with Emerald zoysia (maybe by your dock area) it is a fine blade version instead of being coarse like zenith, and it is also very hard to find right now, I had to buy 1/8 lb packets

Breaking up soil to plant is a good idea. Have you considered using a light covering of the seed with like potting soil or sphagnum moss to keep the seed in place an to help with moisture in the beginning.

About to start a new yard in two weeks. 12-15 loads of dirt and grading. Then 6 lbs of zenith zoysia seed. Going to be a stressful few weeks until it germinates.

Have you considered going organic? Trying a comparison of reel mowing or mulching versus bagging and composting and then enhancing the compost with all natural ingredients. Then applying back to the yard.

I have watched video after video and everyone has a different method, opinion, or recommendation. I bought a new home and the lawn has quite a few burn spots that have appeared after my dog (I try to spray after she goes potty, if I’m home) however I also have a German shepherd/Belgian Malinois that likes to dig a specific spot in my lawn since we moved in and I threw down more soil then seeded it. Grass grew in good but not successful everywhere. Well I need to get more seed but I noticed he is digging that spot AGAIN! I don’t know why. Anyways I feel like I should tear out my lawn and redo it all since there’s patchy areas, burnt areas and now the hole again. My step dad decided to completely tear out his front yard and reseed the entire thing but it’s hard when you have dogs can’t trap them in side for that long. I hope someone can answer this question for me… The grass is growing in beautiful in some spots after the seeds but why does it rip out so easy when running across it? The sod that was laid prior to my purchase of the home seems to be fine with heavy traffic but the 4 month old grass from seed doesn’t seem to be deep rooted?

Doc, do you recommend any cover on the seed (like peat moss, straw or compost) to mitigate potential washouts and prevent birds eating the seeds? Especially now given how expensive grass seed has gotten.

Sow your seeds in a different area then cut the sod and install. Extra work but it works if you have the space. Try plugs from areas in flat sections. Just a couple of thoughts

I have shade over half my front yard. Is there any grass seed that grows in that area? I hear Fescue is best for shade areas. I'm not cutting trees down to lose shade on my house to run up my electric bill.

Redneck is a derogatory term chiefly, but not exclusively, applied to white Americans perceived to be crass and unsophisticated, closely associated with rural whites of the Southern United States. I would say It’s not a good thing
