Lovers of HP sauce say forcing the concoction to contain substantially less salt has ruined its taste. Jon Snow investigates.

When something's as iconic as HP, you shouldn't change it. Simply launch a new brand and let consumers decide.

Or do a “diet” or “less salt” version while continuing the old original one

It's your national sauce. I'm an American and I always have a bottle in my fridge and it's not cheap here.

The “new” HP sauce is utterly disgusting. While I’ve always preferred the YR, as far as brown sauces go, I didn’t mind having HP as a backup (It’s hard to find YR in the US). The “new version” of the HP sauce is another sauce entirely. It’s not a less-salty version of the previous one. I don’t know if I’d even call it a “brown sauce.” The sharp, dominating, vinegary kick and the scorching aftertaste completely cancel-out all of the flavor of the food. Hands down, the worst condiment I’ve ever tasted.

I know its a year later but what is YR sauce? I love H.P. and might not have had the original?

Well I crew up with the old HP sauce and it would go on nearly every meal, and in a day where we are told this is not good for you or that’s not good for you the new owners have decided to reduce the salt. This is so typical of American’s buy it, change it, break up the original company, ship it off to where it brings them more profits, and F**KING ruining it. If all the workers from the Original HP company could get together and make the old brand HP sauce, I believe those who were brought up on the original recipe would buy it. I am just stunned how they can get away with still using the COAT OF ARMS on this New Recipe muck it tastes nothing like the old recipe and there is a very distinctive tangy taste which was never there. It’s actually amazes me where a company says they have changed the recipe to reduce the salt which is more healthy, yet Americans will pack sugar on just about everything and that’s why they have a obesity problem, which they don’t address and 1000s of Americans are dying of.

Its good to mix in stuff or use as a meat base. Dont use it like ketchup!! Must respect HP just like a hot pepper, gun, or a good knife or the sauce will hurt you.

I'm not used to seeing Jon Snow actually being a news anchor. I only know him as being the dancing new reporter from the QI shows. Is HP the same as A! steak sauce? Cant one just add salt to the bottle? I know that there are other AI steak sauces that don't taste very good...like the black peppercorn recipe or the Bold A1 sauce

American here. Only guessing. I'd say the reason most British meats seem undercooked is that it is an island, and the average person poor over history compared to America. That means cooking fuel of any kind is expensive, so cooking time is hasty? Also, the strength of things is because you use a TINY amount and have to make it last. Also the meat is spoiled and you have to cover it up wiht strong flavors. I'm talking about over the entire history of Britain, not just now.

@Zachary Devan British food is not bland. That's a naive myth that naive people keep promoting. It's very odd in this age of information.
