With the HS95, Croatian manufacturer IM Metal (later to become HS Produkt) had learned how to effectively manufacture a good pistol. However, the design had some shortcomings and had not been accepted by Croatian police forces, nor had any commercial export contracts materialized. The company recognized that the way of the future was polymer framed, striker-fired pistols - so they set out to create just that.
Working with a variety of military and technical experts, they developed the processes to manufacture a polymer frame of the requisite strength and durability for a handgun. Mated with a simple-but-effective slide assembly, the HS2000 was born. The development began in 1998, the first pistols were made in 1999, and mass production was underway by 2000. The guns were adopted by Croatian Army and police forces, and Intrac of Tennessee contracted to import 10,000 of them into he US in 2000. The following year, a sales rep from HS Produkt and a company rep from Springfield Armory had a chance encounter at a rather boring conference, and began talking. The result was an import deal for a pistol to be sold in the US as the eXtreme Duty - which has led to more than 6 million pistols sold today.
The first incarnation of the HS2000 actually didn't meet US import requirements; a "target thumb rest" and loaded chamber indicator were added to the design for the initial Intrac imports. A trigger safety was added at the same time, and the design underwent a series of small improvements and iterations over the first year or two of production. We will take a look at all these variations today.
Thanks to Jordan for providing the different versions of HS2000 to make this video possible!

I had a small gun store at the time and many of the purchasers of the IM Metals HS 2000 were security guards who wished they could afford a Glock. I was at the SHOT Show in 1999 and came across these beauties at the Range Day before the show over at PMC's facility in Searchlight. I liked the way it handled and sold every one I could get and suddenly, they were off the market for about a year only to reappear at Springfield as the XD with the noted $100 increase in price. What was nice about Springfield is they honored the warrantee from IM Metals.

Yeah the price hike was kind of bs. But you do also have to factor in the importation fees they have to factor in. Did they charge more than they should have? Yeah probably. I commented earlier the only issue I've ever had was with the striker. Springer Precision makes a great improvement upgrade and I've never had a primer issue since, with any type of primer. The m and p would be my next consideration. I'm typically a rifle guy but since the ridiculous aft "rule" there's a lot of court battles about to happen. I'm glad I kept everything rifle like. And yes I'm one of the poors and bought a xd. But with a proper friend/gunsmith I've found it to be a very decent option. The price hike that Springfield did was a bunch of bs. But I guess it helps when you know the right people to fix known issues forced practically next to nothing in money. I'm not a fan boy of any particular brand. I just like something that works reliably.

I’d love to see a video like this on FN’s FNX series of pistols. My understanding is it was originally designed to compete in a US Army pistol trial as a polymer framed DA/SA version of the browning high power with fully ambi controls, a 1911 style safety and decocker and 17 round magazines, all at a pretty affordable price. That said, it was never adopted by the US (or any other military) that I know of, even with military’s out there still using browning hi powers and I’d like to know why. I definitely prefer it over an M9 beretta 92, but that’s just my opinion.

I bought an early version of the .45 caliber XD sort of on a whim. I actually loved the gun. At the time, a 13 + 1 capacity for a .45 was pretty novel to me, and I liked it so much, I ended up getting the XDS (in .45) to make a set. In those days the gun came with a hard plastic case containing a spare magazine, and a holster and mag carrier for a little over $450. Of course I’ve been carrying a Shield ( and now a Shield Plus) for over a decade, and haven’t even looked at the thing for a while, but it was an affordable, reliable gun, and a nice option to the polymer-frame, striker-fired gun market that previously Glock had cornered.

As a Canadian of Croatian ethnicity I would love to have a XD or HS 2000, but Great Leader has said that we can't be trusted to have pistols, as they are dangerous and unneeded in a modern society. This coming from a man that has armed security around him 24/7. Funny how that's hypocritical when you think about it...

Thanks. I've been a proud XD owner since 07. I knew that the gun was originally the HS 2000 but didn't know of its development history & the chance meeting of the two execs that ended up putting a great pistol in my hands. I've liked the XD so well that I added the XDS not too long after it came out.

I will always have a soft spot for the XD series. I need to hunt down an HS-2000 marked pistol. I have both a Gen1 and Mod.2 XD. I love them both. Ultimately they were never the Glock Competitor. But they are a good pistol for a good price.

Thanks for putting this series together! Now that I have seen some of the developmental history, the pistol is much more interesting to me. I shot a .45 XD a long time ago, and wasn't too impressed, but since I lean toward service-type firearms, I'm giving it a second look, KZfaq gun snobs notwithstanding.

My uncle and I dumped a couple thousand brass pieces of his xdm 45 at the range and I was quite impressed. I also had him (he's a retired marine) handle the xd-9 to make sure I wasn't sissy handling it and him and our gunsmith buddy showed us a simple striker improvement that's makes it run flawlessly now. Everyone has opinions and brand loyalty but I'm a "if it works great when I need it and you're comfortable with it" go with what works best for you.

Been a remarkable journey from the earlier pistols to this for sure. A pistol that, unlike some of the earlier models on this trip, truly stands proud when compared with any of it's contemporary firearms. The sheer number sold to this day does rather speak for itself after all.

The Springfield XD-40 is the best handgun ever made. EVERYTHING on this gun has been perfected. Under the hood it's similar to Glock. The passive safety is ingenious. The trigger is smooth as butter & breaks PERFECTLY. I've shot all kinds of older & newer handguns & NOTHING even comes close to being even equal to the Springfield XD-40. I'm in the law enforcement field so I get access to handguns regularly. The Springfield XD-40 is seriously underrated & slept on top notch pistol. World renowned firearms expert Massad Ayoob chose the Springfield XD as his pick for the greatest handgun at one time. There's articles he wrote about it if you search around.

bunch of years ago i had the chance to shoot a .22, a Springfield XD in .45, and a 9mm Taurus in the same afternoon, and i hadn’t ever heard of the XD… and my god, the recoil on the damned .45 felt closer to the .22 than the 9mm. it is a weirdly pleasant, gentle pistol to shoot and though i’m admittedly a Glock nerd, i gotta give massive respect to the XD and in a pinch, i’d just as quickly choose that.

I bought an HS2000 back in the early 2000's- I thought it was such awesome piece of engineering. Loved the loaded chamber indicator and the grip safety ala 1911. It fit my hand better than the Glock did and the price was too good to be true. Unfortunately, it got stolen out of my car parked in my driveway in the middle of the day. I reported it stolen, hoping to get it back, but never did. My wife bought me an XD a couple years later, but it has the rail clutter and all that. I really miss the clean lines of the original HS... Ian mentions wanting the HS2000 for full service in Croatia, however, when I visited in 2012, the police and border agents (at the airport) in Zadar carried CZ75s, but the police in Zagreb had HS2000s. I get to say I own a gun that was on Forgotten Weapons, since I have an XD. Very nice gun and it just handles and shoots well for me. I know it's not great for everyone. When my Croatian colleagues visited the US and I took them shooting, for that night, it wasn't the Springfield Armory XD, it was the HS2000. They got to enjoy the product of their own country and take pride in it. Addenda: I field stripped my pistol along with Ian to see what the differences might be. Mine is roughly early 2010 manufacture. It was bought in July 2010. First, the month/date wheel is not included anymore. I know mine is early 2010 because the included proof cartridge is dated as such, and signed by the tester. 2 of my XDs have the same tester. Secondly, there are stress relief cuts/notches in the metal piece that forms the rails/ramp/etc.. in the frame where it makes a big U-shape. These were not present in the close ups that Ian showed of the early production pistols. Thirdly, there is a 2nd position in the rail. The "3rd gen" gun shown only has 1 position for the rail: at the end, but they moved the serial number plate back and added another position. This is useful if you have a short light/laser to mount.

I purchased a HS-2000 when they first rolled out ., they were imported in Knoxville TN .. about a hour away from me …A LGS had a dozen or so of them .. the owner of the store had already tested one out and was positive about the pistol… Being I was picking up a couple of transfers.. we worked out a deal on a HS .. $200 OTD I kept this pistol for at least 12 years. Ran thousands of rounds through it … mostly cheap surplus NATO ammo .. I had a great source of the NATO ammo It was my primary carry pistol during that time … I think the Turkish BRG Elite reminds of my HS-2000 .. a overbuilt pistol made by a metal company The Ruger P95 was my first polymer pistol… then the P97 But the HS-2000 was my first striker fired pistol… Thank you for this video

Or maybe you heard alot of hate thrown at a gun that was already on the market at around $200 being rebranded by Springfield and the price almost doubling... Because that's what I remember...
