Bernardelli is (was) an Italian firearms manufacturer in the Val Tromp dating back to the 1600s...but whom few people have ever heard of. They produced 1889 Bodeo revolvers between the World Wars, and after World War Two they had a line of pocket pistols that were never particular popular or respectable in the US.
In 1982, the company released the P018, its effort to create a military and police service pistol. On paper, it was basically completely average for the time. It used a Browning tilting-barrel system, DA/SA firing mechanism, right-handed manual safety and magazine release, steel frame, and double-stack 15-round magazines. It was quite well made, and worked very well. It just never managed to be at the right place and the right time, and was never adopted by any organizations of significance.
A series of pistols followed the original P018, including the P018 Compact, P018S (this example; with a decoder and simple plastic grips), P.ONE regular, P.ONE Compact, and VB Practical (and IPSC competition model). Early models were offered in 7.65mm Parabellum (for maximum hipster points), 9mm Parabellum (for normal people), and 9x21mm (for the Italian civilian market). With the P.ONE, .40 S&W was also added to the offerings. None were bad guns, but none were commercial successful and only a few thousand of all types were made before production ceased in the 1990s.

If someone is a "bodyguard" or whatever job, related to guns (as in any other job), I also would assume that he would have his own "tools" for the job, that he is used to, and professional with it... Like construction workers, electricians... Me as a hunter, etc. I never liked when someone gave me some "company tool". As in wars, when the military gave me some "new" rifles or so, untested, and unknown to me, where I need time to get used to it, "to come to work together", and usually, there is no time for that...war just started...

Their service sized pistols were very well made and for the time up to date with other manufacturers. The were also relatively close to the same price as everything they were competing with. I could never understand why they didn't become more popular

Wrong time. It entered the market after the other famous metal wondernines (Beretta 92, CZ75 and SIG P220 were of the '70s), so it didn't acquire the same mithical status. It had not been selected by any famous government agency (also because Bernardelli didn't have the financial power of Beretta or SIG) and got everything right, with the model "S", right at the start of the plastic gun frenzy, when an all forged steel gun simply looked "old".

Similiar to other markets. You can have two automotive manufacturers that both produce good products. One well sell better than another for "reasons". Another decent 9mm service pistol. The Agentinian copy of the Hi-Power. They shoot decent. Are reliable and were really cheap. A little rough maybe but they work.

I have been using an 9x21 Bernardelli Practical VB accurized for years, bought second hand from an IPSC PRO. I can say that in the shooting range at the time it was the most accurate 9x21 among all the others. One thing: the stupid law that didn't allow to use 9 Para in Italy had an advantage. The 9x21 at that time could be loaded to Major Factor (with caution) Considering that it was second hand (from a PRO) and that I fired at least 5/6000 VERY HOT rounds I can definitively state that it was robust, reliable and long lasting. I miss her.

We reload 9x19 to Major now (165 pf) in Open. The guns crack eventually but you can get a few years in on them before they break. 38 super comp is still around but it's way behind 9 major.

They still sell high quality pistols to the Turkish market. Production wasn’t ceased it continues to this day thanks to Sarsılmaz buying them.

Thank goodness. This looks like the Beretta except markedly better in several ways. The position of the safety/decocker alone is gold. I HATE the Beretta 92's safety. The M1911's safety absolutely curbstomps it into the ground.

I used to own one (the P018 with no "s") in 9x21, bought in June 2020, used until Jan 2023, it was a good pistol overall, a lil on the heavy side and edgy but a realiable one. Sold it for the same price i bought it (about 200€). The only reason why i sold it was the part availability, in those 3 years i've never seen anyone else at the firing range with the same gun and didn't want to discover how fragile they really were. But for that much i think it served me very well. Mine also had a different spring guide, it had a closed ring and not a opened one, i've never learned how to disassemble it the right way it was such a pain every time.

Bit of trivia: In the early seasons of the TV show "X Files," Scully's sidearm was a Bernardelli, I believe in .380. Hardly FBI issue.

Browning was such an influential engineer that there’s like a million copies and improvements of his designs. Neat gun. Aesthetically pleasing, based on a design that’s proven to work with its own improvements and with a 15 round double stack mag it’s got plenty of firepower behind it. 👍🏻

Yay! Thanks Ian. Made my day. Hardly anything on the net about these. Despite being in the UK I had one before the ban. (Don't take your gun rights for granted. They can go just like that.) My PO18 was an early model with a heel release magazine. It kept breaking the trigger return spring. As there was no spare parts supply I ended up cannabalising springs from toy cap guns. Worked fine. Fun times.

My first handgun, not a bad piece and does what it's designed to do but the reputation for fragility is, in my experience, deserved, I've lost count of how many pieces broke in mine during the years, now that parts for it are non existent even here in Italy, I just keep it in the safe as a memento.

Did you break springs or actual parts? If so, which parts are prone to breakage?

@@mattfleming86 I don't remember all the breakages over the years to be honest, the first one was the extractor, not an hard fix but still annoying, springs were broken a couple of times, the most catastrophic one was when a piece went into the trigger mechanism and completely locked the gun, somehow damaging even the trigger bar, granted I might be jinxed but I've only used commercial Fiocchi ammo in it and the Bernardelli was the only one of my guns that had all these issues.

There were VB Practical versions of both the P018S and the P-ONE. I own a new and unfired P018S version VB Practical (9 Para) with all the factory options. Larger beavertail, adjustable target sights, flat trigger, 4 port compensator, extended mag release button, four rubber base mags, Bernardelli embroided locking soft case.......... Bernardelli mined the ore for their guns in the mountains around the Val Trompa region, made their own forging molds and forged/machined almost every single part on the gun. The Bernardelli factory was FULLY water powered, it was on the main river in Val Trompa. The factory remained TOTALLY water powered right to the last day. I find it amazing that Bernardelli almost made it into the 21 Century with a water powered production facility. I purchased my gun based on the interesting history of Bernardelli.

Reminds me of the Tanfolio T95 EAA Witness 10mm. Fine shooting gun that felt great in the hand and handled 10mm better than any other 10mm I ever shot. Another I regret trading away.

I'm always intrigued by the many factors that determine how successful a firearm will be. Obviously, being a good firearm is a start but there were plenty of well-designed and made guns that just never took off.

I really like the way the de-cocker works. I have a couple H&K pistols with safety/de-cockers and it’s always bugged me a little that you have to disengage the safety before you can de-cock. Also, with my HK45 every once in a blue moon I manage to de-cock the pistol while firing because my right thumb rides on the safety lever.

With my limited experience with semi auto pistols, I've found that the larger frame models don't fit my smaller hands properly, so this thinner frame appeals to me.

Same, it's a pain finding something that fits my hands probably. I usually go with 380s but I've used a couple slim 9s and generally I don't have a problem, the slim glock 48 is nice it just sucks it's single stack

At some point in the past, I remember taking a 15-minute tour of this guy. What a sexy pistol. At the time, we were being issued the Beretta M9's and I can remember being angry at the Air Force for forcing that piece of crap on us instead of, well, the SIG or the something as nice as the Bernardelli.

This is almost identical to the Steyr M9 (which you als probably have never heard of). It's a 9x19 Austrian Striker-fired, Browning lockup, double stack, polymer handgun that is basically an anti Glock. But nobody has heard of them!

I'm with you there, does look like a browning and a 1911 had a lovechild tho but i really like how streamlined it looks next to the Beretta

Great video. I've been around guns all my life including surplus but i have not knowingly ran across this. Looks like a well done weapon. Thanks for sharing. God bless all here
