Is cong means "from", how does it fit into that sentence? I don't really get it.

Hi there! Great question and yes 从 is used as "from" for places. In the sentence, "前面有水，大家从右边走。" The speaker is saying is most likely in the lead and that there is water in front (This may be a big puddle).Therefore, the speaker is telling everyone to come "from" the right hand side. A key tip here is that 从 is often used with time and location, so if you see these, it may give you a hint😀 Hope this helps!

从 is also a preposition. It means : A) From (a time, a place, or a point of view) B) Via, through, or past (a place)
