Hi, welcome to ShuoshuoChinese 说说中文; my name is Shuo, I’m a native Chinese teacher living in Bangkok, Thailand, I’ve been teaching Chinese as a foreign language for seven years and I’m also a language learner.

When my mom is on the phone with relatives she sounds exactly like 0:36, they say goodbye for over 10 minutes... "Bye bye, uh-huh, mm-hmm" and then 10 mins later "bye bye" lol

I have to say that in my experience saying goodbye on a phone to a Chinese person takes an amazing amount of time, just like 说老师says: 好的，好的，啊，OK了，嗯，嗯，啊，好的，拜拜了(rinse and repeat for 30 seconds!) ;-)

Not helpful at all really because people do say ni hao otherwise it wouldnt be taught and chinese is confusing enough for westerners let alone chinese people making it even harder by saying what is taught isnt used when it clearly is, its just become trendy for people to do videos now negating textbook chinese and its not helpful at all.

Sometimes a Chinese associate or friend would say " we should go to China together". This is just a saying and they are not serious but it took me awhile to realize this. I thought they were being serious!

Glad to know that many Chinese also have their version of a 'midwestern goodbye', which lasts at least 5 minutes after the real conversation is over. 😂 Makes me feel like we're all not so different, even on the other side of the world!

The key to learn any language are same. Only memorise the important vocabularies such as time, numbers, etc. Doesn't need grammar, or polite phrases. Then, practice it in real life with native speaker, both written or spoken. And learn the culture and mindset of native speaker as well.

你好 and 再见 is used for strangers or semi-formal conversations (but not for very formal converssation), not for friends but it indeed be used in real life commonly.

I've also noticed this with Japanese, I guess the textbook version is the formal way of speaking, and the other informal speech, like with English

Same thing in every language. People (usually beginners) often try to learn BOOK language and not spoken/colloquial language😂 For example : Hindi - Namaste, Russian - Здравствуйте, Turkish - Merhaba, Japanese - Konichiwa, etc. etc. Yes, people do use these words in real life but it’s far less common in peer-to-peer casual conversations.

The 诶 was funny ‘cause it was pretty sudden. And I learned some new things! (Like the fact that you don’t actually say 下午好 and also just say 嗨 for the evening, and also 去哪啊 and 回头见啊. What does 回头见啊 mean literally? And does 去哪啊 mean something like “how’s it going”?)

回頭見啊! translated literally is like "turn your head to see" but really means "see you around!" Or "talk to you later!" You are right with the second question! "去哪啊？" is like "What's up? Where are you off to?" often used if you happen to meet someone you know in the street etc Another common phrase people use is “你吃飯了沒？” or "have you eaten yet?". In both cases, it's followed up by the "meaningless noise" by the asker to acknowledge what the others say (other person isn't expected to give a lengthy answer, just something like "off to do some shopping, and you?" or "I ate on the way here, thanks!" I've personally never heard someone use 下午好 in daily life outside of a textbook, so not exactly sure why they teach it that way hahaha 🤣 (also my characters don't match up with the videa since I'm using traditional ones and can't easily switch to simplified ones on my phone - sorry!)

Just because "Good Evening, it's nice to meet you" is formal doesn't mean it isn't worth knowing if you also know "yo, wazzup!" It's good to know both formal and informal language. A language learner needs to start with formal, which is more stable, and only move on to informal, which is much more changeful, when they have a good grasp of the language.

We always study formal form of a language whenever we study a foreign language. That's why learning languages from friends of the that language is more beneficial.

I've never actually used the phrase "nǐ hǎo" with locals - it's always been things like "Chi bao le ma" at the start of a meal or "Míngtiān jiàn" to casually say see you tomorrow to friends. And rather than straight "nǐ hǎo" greetings, I feel like daily life chitchat here is peppered with phrases like "Chī le ma?" "Măn yìdiǎnr le!" "Zuò shénme zài zheli?" - not textbook friendly lol, but all part of the charm of truly using Chinese!

Textbooks weren’t written to be fake or misleading. I don’t know why so many people have a problem with sounding “textbook”. That’s how it starts when you’re learning and the phrases aren’t incorrect. Now you may not sound like a native Chinese but the fact is-you probably aren’t native Chinese anyway, just use what you’ve learned and communicate. Chinese speakers know what you’re saying. They just won’t hear it the way an actual Chinese says it and that’s alright considering you’re a foreigner. You don’t need to become Chinese to speak it.

Well, if you want to sound like a well-educated person, there's nothing wrong with using 'zaoshang hao', 'zai jian' and so on. Anyway, the textbook was written by people for people. The language is beautiful in all its forms. Simplification is not always good.

It just depends who you are talking to. In some situations you want to sound more formal and respectful, in others - more casual

That is why you need to see chinese drama, taiwan drama, hongkong drama, even southeast asian drama 😂 chinese diaspora is soo widespread. Few years ago i went to taiwan and we brought along a translator but the tlanslator fluent in mandarin (chinese modern - maindland) and... It was a total failure, bc they use Hokkien, fortunately, there were a chinese descent in our team that speak hokkien 😂, also some of us understand japanese...
