This is pretty insightful. Some people grow bored of what they are good at, and with the lack of a challenge, they just feel like they are entitled to the win because they don’t want to do tedious stuff repetitively. When they get the power to take away the repetitive grind, they just cheat because they think that they can back up the time anyways.

think what strikes me about this video is how human Boshy feels in the end, despite feeling like some sort of larger-than-life God at the beginning. at first when the video revealed he was caught cheating i was expecting it to go a la Dream where they dig their heels into the ground, but Boshy transparently admitting why he did what he did and moving forward from it is a dose of honesty that feels missing from the way a lot of people handle these things.

I still have a pair of vintage gunboats signed by boshy way before the cheating allegations as I enjoyed jumping and boshy was the best I feel like its a neat mark of history, "boshy's gunboats" with the desc "signed before the incident" I enjoy his tempus jumps to this day despite the cheating, I don't support cheating but I also don't see why I can't watch his amazing movement from time to time The gunboats will never be sold and is one of my prized possessions, definitely worth the key I gave to get it signed

Yeah, I think deleting the record of the runs was a bad move. Even if all of the runs were considered as invalid, they should still be archived and available for public viewing. Based on the video, none of the cheating boshy did was as bad as the ones from the CS bhop community where the cheated runs are basically tool-assisted. I suppose map editing is worse in its own way, but at the very least, the movement is still all human and takes extreme skill to do.

@@mark030531 I think it was a "just in case" moment considering they only caught boshy cheating for editing star/end pos and abusing /s /t for bhops in bonuses, they most likely have in their TOS that any form of cheating will result in all their times being wiped from the platform as a way to convince jumpers that cheating even to get a fraction of a second faster is NOT worth it

I say it was all planned from the start being the only admin having to also keep up with times of being top dealing with constant work that needs more then a single admin and also having to take care of irl things like job i know those above didn't plan to make any new admins so only a single path was left to make sure the game got more admins the work could be split between removing the last admin also couldn't be any normal leave because i doubt the ones that can make new admins would do it from just a normal leave not really like word would get to them anyway so best option abuse the power and force them to get new admins so they can ban him cause this path would certainly get the attention of those who can add new admins

Good work! Few minor corrections/precisions: 3:25 - Pretty sure Vice came up with that strat, not Boshy. Also Boshy got a 2:11 offline run on the map last year, which completely blows the 2:18 out of the water. 4:56 - What you show here is not a bhop but an uncrouched bounce. At that height, uncrouched bounces are a lot easier and safer than bhops because the timing window for your input is significantly bigger. 5:46 - Tempus Cup was essentially a rebranding of Beginnings. It had the same format/rules, a lot of the same contributors, just under a new administration. It’s basically BG7. 6:58 - If we want to be picky, it’s 1/66.666… of a second, or 0.015 seconds. 7:53 - Wrong definition of jumpbug. A jumpbug is uncrouching+jumping on same tick. Pretty much everyone (including Boshy) just put those 2 inputs (-duck;+jump) on a single key, so it’s virtually the same as a bhop in terms of execution, it's just a single tick perfect input. So for when b5, no it’s not 16 tick perfect inputs, it’s still 8. However, current WR by sx extends the sequence of jumpbugs further to skip the drop pogo, making it 10 tick perfect inputs. It's also worth noting that Boshy first got super dominant on Tempus thanks mostly to his wallpogo skills, he got way better at it than everyone else at the time, and since demo maps as soldier are usually mostly wallpogo, he got a buttload of points by getting and keeping wr on pretty much all wallpogo maps on Tempus. He eventually branched out to more conventional soldier maps as well, and ended up being just as dominant on those, but this happened a bit later in his career.

I thought jumpbugs were not tick perfect and that you actually have 3 ticks due to the uncrouch speed or so.
@vavlietf2410
@vavlietf2410 Жыл бұрын
@@VrOOm1337 I can't speak for other source games, but in TF2 uncrouching mid-air is instant. The uncrouching, grounding, and jumping all happen in the same tick when performing a jumpbug. Jumpbugs are possible when your vertical position is such that if you were to uncrouch, your hitbox would end up 0-2 units above the floor surface. Normally, you are in such position for only 1 tick, and specific vertical alignment is required which is why we use setups for jumpbugs just like for regular bounces. However, unlike bounces and bhops, it is theoretically possible to have an opportunity window longer than one tick IF you are falling extremely slowly (slower than 2 units/tick), say thanks to modified gravity value. But I've never seen this used anywhere.

Thank you very much for making this video, it's great to see some quality jumping lore! I have a few little things to add: 1) 3:17 - and he actually got a 2:11 offline run on this map 2 years later! 2) During the first ban all of Boshy's bonus times were wiped, only map and course times were left. After that he was still extremely far ahead on the soldier leaderboard by more than 100k (maybe even 150k, don't remember exactly) points. 3) After the full wipe the community made a list of Boshy WRs for reference. I think it's quite a thing on tempus network right now to try to beat those WRs :) Currently there are 40 WRs left to beat, including offline runs and some demoman WRs. Some of them (like apex) are very close to unbeatable. 4) 22:32 - it was not just his first time set, it was his first RUN in the tournament after a small start reset.

Very interesting story. It’s nice to see a cheater actually admitting that they did it, accepting the punishment and retribution, having actual plausible reasoning for why they did it that doesn’t sound them just making things up to get forgiveness, AND having the actual skills to still claim WRs without cheating, just with a little more grinding.
@Mcskill
@Mcskill Жыл бұрын
Boshy dug his heels in, vehemently denied further cheating and used admin privileges to destroy evidence. If it wasn't for the tempus detectives he wouldn't have admitted to anything, only acknowledging a cheated run once it was a fact. As pointed out in the video, no one knows if he's cheated in ways that are not possible to detect. It's obvious from past behaviour he would never admit it if he did.

@@McskillThe guilt and the punishment might have given him a lesson, changing him. If he didn't get caught, he would still be entitled and wouldn't change. That's how being a human works. Okay guys, i see a lot of people praising how he handled the situation. But here is the timeline: Boshy denied everything at first. I love and appreciate how you portrayed Boshy as not a character in a story, but a real human that deserves to be treated like one. Too many stories of 'legends' in a community portray them as something larger than life and it's easy to worship them by the end of the video or demonize them. You did a great job at showing what happened, making Boshy still feel human by the end, and have the viewer accept everything that has happened yet still hope for something better in the future. Fantastic video, hope you make more of these.

Cheating in single offline player is fine by me. I do it a lot. I don't play multiplayer anyway but if I did I wouldn't cheat. You're playing about (emotions etc) with something that affects other people.

Great video, it's insane just how dominant boshy was, at one point, he had 300k points on just soldier, which was almost 200k over second place... not to mention he was also one of the top demo jumpers. By the way, he also reran jump_jurf offline just like apex, his time offline was actually 2:11

I love this story as it shows what actually happens in our world. Boshy getting legit #1 on Tempus put a lot of pressure on him and I think he only needed some moral support. It's sad that he chose the wrong path but I still love his story, him admitting to allegations yet still not leaving the game but take it less seriously. I hope Boshy gets another legit #1 and that he'd keep it for much longer, if hes not going to get bored

Lot's of little things off with this video, most importantly for me is not pointing out that the main reason why Boshy was so dominant for most of the years he was top ranked was because he was the best at Wallpogo which means he got free wrs on hundreds of demo map. Take out the demo maps and he wouldn't have been ranked number 1 for so long. Nowadays he is exceptional in all Rocket jumping techniques, but certainly not when, say when Minty was rank 2 Soldier jumper. Overall I appreciate this video as there aren't many going over Rocket jumping history on KZfaq (if any at all), but to me there's enough wrong with the information being spread here that I wish a better video was made instead.

Great video! This has needed to exist for a long time now and you did a great job of being objective but also entertaining. Also since it wasn't made super clear in this video, after boshy's original 3 month ban quite a few months passed where he was unbanned and actively playing on tempus setting new wrs. During this time period he had no admin powers so it would have been basically impossible to cheat map wrs (was banned from playing bonuses). Also during this time he would set his all of his most prestigious wrs offline (apex, jurf, jurf2, omega, rebound and gateway etc.), and as these runs were streamed we can say with 100% confidence they weren't cheated (incase anyone was wondering). These runs are also considered to be his most 'unbeatable' wrs, and are so far ahead of the community's general skill level it's honestly insane. Also in terms of being the most prolific cheater I'd actually argue that the demo player Jorge cheated far more than boshy, with 50+ cheated bonus wrs I believe (mostly using macros to bhop and some people believe to triple pre too). Maybe a good follow up to this video :P

I think that he'll be called a dick if he acts like one, but a decent amount of his ledger will be cleaned if he comes back and reasserts his dominance in some way, shape or form (which, given how he was able to break records practicing for an event, could well be done by accident).

I am a little flabbergasted this guy is allowed to eventually come back at all and is even welcome at tournaments. As you say yourself, speedrun communities like these are entirely trust-based and after stuff like this you are done for good if you ask me.

As someone who has watched a lot various speed running scenes, (not someone who has any stakes in TF2 or rocket jumping) I knew immediately that Boshy was cheating. The unfortunate reality is, like Boshy said, this isn't as uncommon as you'd think. From Monkey Ball to Portal map a sizable chunk of the top runners of the past ended up cheating for generally the same reason. "I don't like X about the game and seeing as I could get WR through enough attempts I just cheated." Once they crack the cheating bottle open, its hard to stop. The pressure to maintain the top can cause people to crack. As for the scorched-earth approach: that's standard practice. In fact, compared to other games, Boshy got off pretty light. Single cheated runs have had people banned permanently. An 18 month ban and a record wipe is not only a slap on the wrist by any stretch of the imagination, but many other communities would have completely cut him out of it. I am all for giving people a second chance though, so I respect the admins decisions to not make it permanent. If Boshy is as talented as he seems from this video, he'll get those WRs again without cheating.

there's a greater sense of community in the Team Fortress 2 Rocket Jumping community because it's a multiplayer game on servers. People help each other out in real time talking about strats and techniques through game chat. Sometimes when I'm stuck on a jump, there's a guy trying to coach me through it. It would make sense that the ban wouldn't be a permanent given insights from admins and other jumpers about Boshy as a person beyond the results.

@@user-nm9yd4wq4s I think both communities have a ton of comradery. A lot of speedrun communities are very close-knitted and welcoming to newcomers all the same. Of course, there are some groups with exceptions.

Most cheaters in general always try to deflect and deny at first, but from what you explained Boshy admitted to it the moment he was caught. And him explaining how the superiority complex got to him really makes me feel like he is a good guy that just went on a power trip. Of course I don’t know him personally so I can’t be certain but it IS clear he does have the skill to obtain world records. And from what I know he hasn’t done any BS like harass others online so overall I hope he does well.

A tale as old as speedrunning time. Someone who's good at the game get's frustrated with RNG related mechanics and just can't find joy in it. Boshy let the admin position get to their head and let the power corrupt them. It's a pretty common story when it comes to speedrunning and competitions. It always sucks to hear that a top runner eventually ends up cheating as opposed to someone who's always cheated, because we all know that the skilled player can get those times, but can't handle the grind anymore or are tired of RNG dependent areas of a run. "Speedrunners don't cheat to get a faster time, they cheat to get a time faster" was a saying I heard from Karl Jobst. A lot of runners have the skill, but RNG dependent areas of the game suck away the fun of the game, and eventually they resort to cheating to manipulate RNG so they can get the run they know they can achieve when RNG decides to work for them. While some people like it, it's not exactly uncommon to feel frustrated at RNG mechanics. Boshy edited the maps and it was wrong. I'm glad that he was upfront about it, and has shown in live footage to actually be as good as he says he is. He just cracked under the pressure and did some dumb shit. As long as the dude admits to it and changes, then there is redemption there. It'd be pretty sad to just strike all his times down because it would also come off as admins being upset or potentially wanting to remove them so other people can take those WRs from Boshy.

The idea of RNG making one feel entitled is incredibly relatable. I've been speedrunning a game recently where I get all kills in a certain level before leaving. Occasionally I will get a situation where I have an amazing time but the kill counter is stuck at 99%. Almost every time this has happened I go searching for what enemy is left and it is always this one enemy who gets stuck in a room on the way to where the final fight is held and I lose what would be a personal best time because of random pathing. I've always just reset my run and try again (I eventually did get a good time) but I can 100% understand how someone might feel this situation is unfair and use a cheat to just...delete that one enemy.

The Boshy situation is kinda similar to Billy Mitchell where he actually did have the skill (beating Pac-Man) but let the fame get to his head and went through the cheating route. Difference being Billy tried to prove his innocence and even went into legal proceedings.
