Hours of bitter fighting, sometimes hand-to-hand, the Confederates came close to winning. Somehow the Yankees rallied, pushing the Greybacks out. A perfect shower of lead riddled the Rebel ranks. One by one, grey officers were cut down. As elite as Lee's men were, even they had their limits. By ones and twos, then by small groups, the Confederates began to retreat. Some under orders, others sought self preservation. The fighting petered out as the enemy left the field taking their wounded, but leaving behind piles of dead both in front and inside the walls. While the losses were high on both sides, the Rebels could never take this fort, thereby denying Davis's Boys water access. Whipped, the remnants filtered back to their camp dragging their wounded in their arms. General Pickett stood on the road, glasses in hand, without his cap or sword. He looked with large, soft eyes of his men limp past, pitifully whimpering, trying to take their comrades to the field hospital. Seeing Pickett on the road, General Lee approached, "General Lee, sir, you may pull your men behind this ridge here and set up a defensive position." Given the order, Pickett could only stand in stunned silence. "General Pickett, sir...you must look to your division." Pickett looked up at his commander, with pain in his voice, confessed, "General Lee, I HAVE NO DIVISION!" The realization struck Lee on the head like a mallet. For a moment he sat on his horse staring at the distance, the faint outline of the fort was visible through the haze of burnt gunpowder. Then the confirmation became clear as the Stars and Stripes rose above the mighty walls, that flag was still there.
