This is undoubtedly some of the best "HUGE DOGTOOTH TUNA" footage ever put together in one awesome video, myself (Richard Price) and 3 other good friends travel to remote Lau island group of Fiji with Jaga (the doggy lord) of Free-dive Fiji Charters to specifically target MONSTER "DOGTOOTH TUNA" on JIGS and to say it was successful is a huge understatement. In this video, you will see insane footage of numerous trophy Doggy's being hooked and landed to over 80kgs. You will also see awesome bi-catch of many big reef species like GTs, Trout, Wrasse, MSPs, Ironjow, Job-fish, and more. During our trip we stay in one of the remote island villages which were truly an amazing experience, the island people have such simple yet amazing lives and in this video, you will see a sample of daily life and the paradise they live in. This was a really unbelivable fishing trip! Fiji is from Europe, i think, a 2 Days flight trip.... equal to the distance to the Christmas Islands. But.... now i have seen your Video and i'm infected ;-) the size of the Doggis is really amazing and also the GT's have good Size..... perfect and a real dream. Gave you a like and a Abo for this one :-)

Wow!!!!! Really awesome mates!!! Guessing you guys are from down under? I live in Hawaii. Been here my whole life. I commercial fished living on the Big island on my custom built Force 30 boat. Mostly caught Big ahi, 100- nearly 300lb size, plus lots of ono and Mahi Mahi. Lots of deep sea bottom fish, snapper species!!! Then because my home port was in kona, I loved to take my friends out marlin fishing for fun and we get huge blue marlin here!! I probably caught over 200 "Big donkeys" (marlin over 500 lbs) while fishing alone!!!! Incredible challenge doing that by myself!!!! Went to tonga and Micronesia to teach the local fisherman how to catch big ahi and the deep water snapper and it was wide open crazy with huge fish bigger than in Hawaii!!!! Also went to Oman and taught them our Hawaiian big ahi fishing techniques!!!!! Again these places were virtually untouched and unfished back then and just Incredible!!!!! These were government contracts with these countries. Obviously where you guys were in Figi is similar!!! Seems that more people are seeking out the really special places now!!! I was doing those trips back in the 70's and early 80's and the fisherman and their boats were really primitive. Some places just small canoes and virtually untouched!!!! Those doggies are monsters!!!! Deep jigging is so awesome when you find the right spots and with GPS and the high end color video sounders now it must really be Incredible in the world's remaining untouched places!!!! Enjoyed it!!! I'd love to go there sometime and do that!!! We have dogtooth tuna in Hawaii but they are rare and very hard to find and much smaller than those behemoths you guys are catching there!!!! Aloha from Hawaii Don Libbey

Hi Don. Thanks for your thoughts and it sounds like you living the dream over there and have seen many great fish in your time. Harder and harder to find 'untouched' places these days and then theres the issue of getting to these great 'untouched' spots. With the way electronics are these days it makes targeting these trophy fish so much easier. Thanks again for your thoughts and take care :)

Hi Nagen. The rod I use is a Doggy Jigger Elite and it is what we have custom built for targeting big pelagic fish with lighter jigs and is available at www.elitetackle.com.au Also the jigs we use are the SYNOTEK jigs and in particular the Hercules jig, DT special jig seen in the video and also is available through Elite Tackle The reel is a Shimano stella 20000 and I use YGK WX8 Jigman in PE8

Those are serious dinosaurs! Did you guys have a good hook-up to landing ratio? I feel like I see so many videos of guys jigging for doggies and full throttling the boat off the ledge/reef edge and busting off on fish not even close to this size.

Cheers mate. Yes I agree and we did have a pretty good hookup/landing ratio. Also in our favour was the lack of sharks which as you know can be a real problem.

Elite Tackle This is true, and a good point. Coming from the US, I have experience catching bluefin tuna on spinning gear in the 60-100kg range but none with the amazing dogtooth tuna. I was curious, are they like GT, coral trout etc. and so many of those reef species that head straight back to the structure when hooked and stopping them before they break you off in the reef is part of the strategy?

You hit the nail on the head Dan, yes they head for structure which I didnt know in the early days but I have friends who are spearos and they have confirmed it for me....in fact they will drive themselves into reef structure and it might even kill themselves and even more so with a toothy predator on their tail

Elite Tackle wow that’s incredible! Never considered all the knowledge experienced guys on spear have and how fish behave under stress. On your big doggie jigging setups is it typically PE-8 over PE-10 for the extra capacity and leader is just your standard mono in the 180lb-200lb range?

I use mainly PE8 but also have pe6 on spare spools as its more about line capacity than trying to stop them.....a healthy big dog cant be stopped haha. Yes standard 200lb leader is perfect mate

20k stella is perfect imo. I have 2 spools set up with PE8 & PE6 for extra line capacity but the rod is probably more important than anything. It has to be just right to get the bits but handle the big fish

I have tried PE10 and found it was not as affective as PE8 when working the jig. Pe8 seems to be the perfect balance for strength and jig action and also with PE8 I was able to get greater line capacity which was extremely important. I have even tried PE12 but with the larger DTT we have found they can not be stopped no matter what so line capacity was a more important consideration

Hey mate. So we spent 2 years creating what we consider the ultimate doggy jigging rod for targeting trophy dogs on small to medium jigs which is the only way to go imo. Gone are the days of using big heavy jigs. The rod is longer than a normal heavy jigging rod but still has the power down low to handle the big beasts. yes included accommodation and everything else but not flights. Stayed in Pacific harbour then we stayed out on remote islands in one of the local villages which you can see in the video
