DID YOU SEE PART 3??? • THE BEST TRACK NEAR UL...
The Journey continues as Tiff and I push forward our EPIC trip in the Northern Territory.
Last time we completed the Boggy Hole Track and and made it back into Alice Springs after a quick restock we are back on the road and attempting to get to Halls Creek WA via the Tanami track a harsh 800km corrugated road into WA. After a Huge fail half way up the track we get towed back to Alice fix the 76 and have another crack. We are determined to get to the Gibb river road. Stay tuned to see if we make it into WA and across the GIBB RIVER NEXT WEEK!!!
Note: These videos were filmed JUNE/JULY 2019.

At around 3:20 you're doing around 110km/h on corrugations while fully loaded. No wonder you broke the diff. As a rule of thumb you should drop your speed by the same proportion that you drop your tire pressure. Eg. if you run 40 PSI and 100km/hr on tarmac, and 30PSI on gravel or dirt roads, then you should should also drop your speed by 25% ie 75km/h max. I also have a 76 and found the rear can get squirrely above 80 on outback roads. Pack light, take it easy, look after the vehicle and the vehicle will look after you.

big heavy 10 leaf springs , most likely poly bushes everywhere . the leaf springs can't flex like they were designed to do . so the diff housing flexes and eventually breaks . Factory leaf count springs ,rubber bushes with a quality airbag system is a better load carrying option . Sadly most 4WD accessory shops are staffed by people without a clue who have never done what you are doing . I'm in the camp that says you should drive at a speed to get on top of the corrugations . Experience ,LV mechanic looking after over 200 4wds on projects building gas pipe lines from places like Dampier to Bunbury , Telfer Mine , The Bonaparte Gulf . If a road train is coming towards me on a single lane tarmac or dirt road I will get off the road as far as possible , and stop . let the dust blow away and continue . In dust it's Russian roulette that someone is not overtaking a truck coming towards you.

@@theexplorelife Yeah, fair enough. Wasn't trying to criticize, just I've done a lot of Ks over similar terrain in a nearly 20 year old lighter duty 4x4 fully loaded and haven't had any major breakages. Plently of things have rattled loose over the years, but no catastrophic failures. You're right about needing to find that sweet spot where you don't feel every corrugation whilst still maintaining decent steering response. I reckon those heavy duty leaf packs probably didn't help much either. Cheers, mate.

Hey Matt. Hope your insurer doesn't read through these comments. Exceeding the speed limit, being overloaded, admitting to using spacers in the rear end. For info mate, spacers are illegal in every state in Australia, and using them will void any insurance. Grateful you didn't come to grief and you have an epic tale to tell, but listen to the advice in the comments. Weigh your rig, lighten it up, lower tyre pressures, and slow down. The tyre pressures that you can get down to safely (25-30) that will preserve your vehicle cannot be driven on at the speeds you were travelling at. Mick Porters comments are invaluable advice.

Mr Jack T - 4WDing Touring in Western Australia Haha just so we’re clear I was running 25 in the front about 28 in the rear I knew how heavy the truck was. Spacers are illegal and so are offset rims to fix the problem. I won’t drive this vehicle with out spacers because it’s to dangerous and I couldn’t at the time afford them diff correction. You sore a 10 second clip of my speed on a 500km drive I sat at 90 most of the time. I have done thousands of km on dirt roads all over Australia and around the world in all different vehicles with no problems what so ever. The 76 has a weaker diff that the 79s unfortunately it was the weak point in this build and things break that’s touring if it wasn’t this something else may have broken that’s all part of exploring and when you do some of the harder 4wding I do as well as touring these things are inevitable.

@@theexplorelife Hey Matt. Come exploring with me and my friends and we can show you a different perspective on what "harder" 4WDing and touring is all about. Genuine offer, myself and a few friends are doing a very remote route within WA in May (16th to 30th). Great trip planned. It's on an almost entirely un-maintained track, and will be in places severely rougher than a graded gravel road like the Tanami. A few notes though.. Need a safe 1000km fuel range, and able to be fully self contained for at least a week without resupply. No mine sites or Aboriginal communities along the route where help can be sought if a catastrophic failure occurs. Also need to be able to prove with a weighbridge certificate, that your rig does not exceed Gross Axle Weight Ratings front and rear. Sean

I'm bored with Covid so plugged a search in on YT for "Dumb and Dumber' - it threw this up and it took me to 14:08 to realise, with the shot of the speed reading, why this video was selected......

Classic Toyota swiss cheese driveline 🧀💩💥 Nothing new here they have always been piss weak . Plenty of cars do that road daily... Good effort from the lads saving the day 👍

That stiff rear spring setup not exactly the best for corugations. Unfortunate that Toyota haven't improved that design. Good to see you got it sorted tho.

that's what we did everytime. The other thing is we never got into the position of overtaking one of the buggers. I figured, if we were catching them, then we were going too fast and backed off.

And this is why people buy 70's series for touring, if you had any other car you would of struggled for parts.

@@theexplorelife ofcourse, if you bought a different car, you might not need parts to replace broken ones.

Putting spacers in the rear to bring it out to same as front without reanforcing the diff first is a nood move.

Thats the D-Max curse. You need to take a lesson from us Bash drivers. The first thing you do is reinforce the diff housings. There are load limits on 4WDs. Its no good just putting in stiffer springs and bigger shocks. The max load capacity of the 76 is 700kgs. Out of that you have to deduct passengers and fuel. 150 lt of fuel weighs 200kg. Two people, say 160kg, That leaves you 340 kgs left for everything else. Think about that. What do two of those big wheels and tires weigh each? 40 kg? 20 lt of water is 27kg. Add it all up. The roof rack? 150kg? you are up to 265kg without any other stuff? What does all that rack system weigh? 50kg? Now you are within 30kg of your capacity. I would say with all your gear you were running 200kg overweight. No wonder the diff housing snapped.

your right except one litre of diesel weighs 0.832 kg so 150 litres = about 125kg

I hear it all the time, don't go bush in anything other than a Landcruiser, they are unbreakable, never let you down. As I tell everyone, all cars can break, but I still can't believe this 76 rear axle broke like this, pretty piss poor Toyota. I know everyone will say it may have been overloaded, but this shouldn't happen, so I really feel for you Matt, but I'm sure it's all up and running by now. This is the problem with the 70 series Landcruisers, you need to change out so many components to make these 4WD's great for outback/off road driving, costs you a bloody fortune.

exactly right mate, with the 70s I think it's just piece of mind knowing that you have a better chance of sourcing spares in remote areas. We were very lucky regardless

Hey Matt, I hope you learn from these comments about speed, corrugations and tyre pressure. You were a disaster waiting to happen. Sure made good content, but we don't want you dead or in a wheel chair dribbling for the rest of your life. Slow down and enjoy the journey. Good job and your regular camera crew are amazing.
