HUGE Flathead Catfish Takes What It Wants

In this video, I hit a creek on the Tennessee River in search of some big blue and flathead catfish. I was using a combination of live and cut bait. It was a fun afternoon of kayak catfishing with a huge flathead being caught along with several quality blues.

Absolutely in love with those rods, had 5 given to me by my uncle about 7 years ago and they are still going strong. Have fought everything from blue cats to monster black drum and big snapper offshore.

Heck, me and my Uncle Art used to catch them flatheads out of the Great Miami River, there in Middletown ( OH) a lot of times on cutbait of some kind, usually a bluegill head or fillet the side off a bluegill, and they’d hit something like that sometimes quicker than a live bait. On some days , usually during the day too, after dark the live bait seemed to be a little better. We was just doing the catfish Dave thing back then, bank fishing! That was before Ol Catfish Dave though, well before he was on KZfaq anyways. That was in the early to late 90’s. But man that was nice big Ol Flathead ( or Shovelheads, as they call them in Ohio) lol!

Flatheads are opportunistic feeders. Most of the time the hang out in one spot so they don't expend much energy. Blues and channels are the travelers.

Yeah, many times when used to run bank lines, we had channel cats caught then ate by flatheads, or big chomp marks where they tried. Good times, I need to get back to that.

Heck yea! Old yeller! Beast Mode! My 2 last nice size Flatheads around beginning of March 20' around the middle of Fort Loudon near Louisville section was both on cut body sections. Sometimes I think the Flats prefer cut to live in East Tennessee. Spectacular video! Tight Lines! Rippin' Lips!

I live in NC, and my biggest flathead weighed 38.6 pounds. He came on a piece of cut shad. All my friends use live bluegills for them, but I’ve caught all my biggest ones on cut bait too.
