Read before commenting: The reason you clip a horse in the winter is because if you ride them with their thick winter coat, they get very sweaty and then it is also difficult to dry them and they end up getting cold. Would you like to run around and excercise with thick jackets on? It’s really uncomfortable for them so if a horse is in work, it’s nice for them to clip them. And regarding her whiskers, I did not clip them off.

Holly, I am so sorry people are ignorant when it comes to horses. Apparently people think a thick coat is needed to keep a horse warm. Um, not if they are being worked and sweat----that would take forever to dry. She looks FINE, also do people not realize you live in Ireland??? You don't get cold winters like I do in Ontario Canada. And for those who think cutting whiskers off of a horse is bad, then I guess all of our competition horses would be bumping into jumps, not going over them. FOLKS!! Our horses are DOMESTICATED!!! NOT WILD! in fact I was joking at the farm I work at (high end A circuit facility), and said not one of our horses would survive in the wild because they are way too pampered! :D Rant over.

@@LE123LE123 Seriously I was about to say this. Winter in Ireland is pretty mild. It's totally acceptable to clip your horses face in milder climates. People really don't seem to realize keeping horses in different climates is DIFFERENT! Personally I just shorten my horse's whiskers, not completely shave them, but at the barn I work at (another high end A circuit facility) they completely clip the whiskers and the horses don't act any differently.
@mayac218

Darkhorse3211 I think whiskers should be kept on because it's natural but, then again, it's not the end of the world if they are clipped 🤷‍♀️ I'm just not too keen on feathers being clipped off (something a lot of people choose to clip off). They are there to help keep water off the legs and drip off so the hair and skin dry, preventing fungal infections. But hair in ears being clipped, isn't that there to protect the ears? What happens if those are clipped? PSA. I haven't finished the video yet so I don't know if the feathers and ears are clipped, but I felt like talking about those topics, regardless.

Hey I live in Tx and it doesn’t get crazy cold but it sure ain’t comfortable if I’m not wearing a jacket of some sort also ya you clipped her that’s great if you constantly keep her in a stall and ride in a covered or protected ring/arena but if you turn them out they can get cold and start to freeze for one I’m not a huge fan of blanket but if it’s FREEZING ya sure still though also whashing her in WINTER srsly that’s not good finally she did not look gross in the beginning she was a fluffy cute little sweet heart she just had mud on her yeash!!!

Something people who haven't been to Ireland in winter probably don't realize is that it's really wet, but not very cold (at least in most of Ireland). It's even more important to clip your horses if they're still in work because of how wet it is, because it's really difficult for the horse to dry off. They are often colder with a heavy coat because they can't get dry.

Coastal Coyote---really? Every show horse we have that goes to Florida has to get a full clip or they would die from heat stroke. Of course, by the time our horses head down south, we've had some pretty cold temp drops (below -10F for some nights) and have some fairly fuzzy critters :D

I'm in south Louisiana and my mustang gets a partial clip in the winter. Its humid and very wet with crazy temperature fluctuations, it may be 80 one day and drop into the 30s that night then not get above 50 the next day. I clip him so his sweat dries faster during workouts and then blanket him as needed. He has a light waterproof sheet and an insulated liner that goes under if he needs added warmth. When he wasn't in full work during the winter months I'd leave him unclipped and wouldn't blanket. But, now we are working more in the winter and take off a few months during the summer (or ride at night).

Fiona is such a beautiful horse! She seems so patient and obedient. It's nice to see that she has such a nice, responsible, and dedicated owner who adores her. She definitely looked like she felt loads better after all that winter fuzz and grime was removed- her coat seemed like a totally different color when she was finished being clipped. I had to do the same to all of my Appaloosas a couple of months ago. I don't clip my horses, as I de-shed them carefully with a metal currycomb, and, I swear they were shedding like cats! Also, I don't understand why some people think that this is abusive. She clearly cares for and loves this horse greatly- anyone who cannot see that is stupid.

@@HollyLenahanSJ I do have a suggestion for a new video: how the whole process goes from bringing a mare in foal, till the day the're born. I am so curious how it works. Like how do you know which stallion fits your mare best and how often do you let the vet come to check the foal?

Actually, they do have winter and summer coats! In summer, usually the coat is so thin that it's fine without being clipped. In winter though, it's very thick. Because of this it's usually clipped, because a working horse will sweat, and it would be colder for the horse to be sweaty and have a thick coat than not be sweaty and have a clipped coat with a blanket on :)

Here in Maine during our frigid winters, the horses grow SUPER, SUPER thick winter coats. Like, five times the thickness of her neck where you ran your hand through. Season after cold season their integumentary system just naturally provides an almost thicker coat each year. Makes for many VERY, VERY hair/fluff covered days while helping them shed out in April!

Good job cleaning her up. I’ve owned horses for 40 + years. I really think you should get a bucket squirt shampoo into it and mix with water then apply with a body brush.. I have applied it like you did, the drawback is you get lots of shampoo on top of horse and it is harder to spread it thoughly all over horses body. I do this now for my dogs. It’s saves money in shampoo { which is expensive] your time rinsing, wastes less water, prevents any skin reaction to residual shampoo over withers.

Try clicker training. I can wash and clip my horses without even tying them now. One of mine dislikes baths, but he will stand like a champ for a few peanut treats. I can even clean their sheaths. I do put on a halter and lead rope to let them know it's business time, but then just drop the rope. They are good boys. Clicker training really helps give them incentive. It's positive reinforcement and let's them choose, which my horses really appreciate. They are better behaved when they have some control over their choices vs being forced or trapped (tied up). it's really remarkable the change clicker training did for my horses.
