We took in a huge coin collection that a coin collector sold us in the store the other day, and I have a chance to search part of the previously unsearched section that we purchased. In this massive coin collection search, we found some really cool wheat pennies, buffalo nickels, V nickels, silver dimes, uncirculated wheat pennies, and semi key date coins in addition to some other surprises. I enjoyed this unboxing and loved finding the hidden treasure in the collection. Not to mention the different proof sets, uncirculated sets, and more! Watch the video to see all of the cool things and I included the coin collection's value at the end with an appraisal based off of a conservative (low) estimate.

You seem to be very interested in the money, saying how most of those coins are “junk” and “worthless” I mean they’re still worth more than face value and definitely more to someone who appreciates that kind of stuff. Bummer man.

Daniel Hughes .....yeah, its a real bummer when someone needs to actually turn a profit that justifies being in business for you and I to have a place to go and see coins and have access to such locally. Its expensive to have a retail space, utilities, insurance etc Just to make sure we are clear, I am not in any type of coin related business. I am however a business owner and it seems that many have no idea of the cost and time to turn a profit in order to make a living.

Love looking through coins both old and new. I’ve been collecting coins since I was six years old. My first coin was a coin that my grandmother gave me that she had found on the farm it was a 1867 Shield nickel without Rays. But it was fairly worn and full of green patina but still it was the first in my collection. I’m 69 years old now and I’m still collecting coins. I filled up many albums of Lincoln cents liberty nickels, buffalo nickels, Jefferson nickels, Indian cents, barber dimes, Barber halfs, Mercury dimes, Roosevelt dimes, Liberty standing quarters, Washington quarters, liberty walking half dollars, Ben Franklin half dollars, John F Kennedy halves, Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Sacajawea dollars, Anthony dollars, Eisenhower dollars, I still need to get an 1895 Morgan dollar. Maybe you have a 1895 Morgan Dollar laying around the coin shop. I would be interested in buying it from you for the right price.

Wow. This is SO SIMILAR to the collection I am trying to sort. My Father's Collection (he's been gone close to 20 years now, a collector of the 50s-60s) is probably 5 times larger and he had some significant pieces such as: (3) 1955 DD cents, (4) 1909-S VDB, 1922, (15+) St. Gauden's $20's, Liberty Heads, Flying Eagle cent, Mexican Gold Type set, British Sovereigns all slabbed now, to name a few. What I am left with is all the 'cigar boxes,' candy containers, jars and countless rolls of halves, quarters, dimes, nickels, and cents in all varieties. I have found what I think are some coins in the $200+ range but I need help grading them. I have attempted to grade, on my own, countless Walkers, Buffs, Jeffs, Wheaties and soon the Mercs. I am putting them in flips if RB says value is over $1. If not, they go in rolls. I've used about 1500 (2 coins per) flips so far. I am treating his collection with great care and respect as I do not have the knowledge needed, but I am learning. My wish is to sell off all the low grade silver and coins to buy more valuable coins, thus taking bulk away from the collection and making it more manageable (As I intend to move in the semi-near future). Thanks for the video, do treat the coins more gently, and thanks for all the 'take-a-ways' concerning value of common coins.

That 1913 Type-2 Buffalo nickel was a nice find. It's the "raised ground", or "type-1" of that year that's more common. They originally began by minting a large(typical) amount of the coins with the higher area underneath the buffalo, but the "five cents" that was placed there as well, under the buffalo and raised higher than everything else on the reverse of the coin, swiftly rubbed away. Leaving those ignorant of the coin to not know, or trust it's denomination. So, before the year ended they minted a modest amount to get through until the next year of mintage, keeping the 2nd design, for obvious reasons. Hence the lower mintage and historical significance, adding a nice little premium to an already beautifully preserved, aesthetically pleasing little piece of American numismatic history.

It depends on the year whether an uncirculated mint set is valuable. I briefly thought I had five from the late 1950’s, and oooh baby I wish I weren’t mistaken. They were proofs, just not really mirrored, and they were Philadelphia, which is what threw me (Philadelphia did proof sets back then, and they did DOUBLE mint sets). Anyway, yeah, mint sets from the late 50’s, more than $250 per.)

They story goes mom sold it to a fellow C & H sugar company secretary around 1960-1962 for face value . I started collecting coins in 1970 at the age of 12 . I would buy $20 of penny rolls from different banks . Take out the wheat pennies and worked on my collection at 2 local coin shops . I still have$200 of wheat rolls in my 2 safe deposit boxes . I recently took them home for my 15 year old twins to start filling therebooks .

Owners obviously dealt with the higher priced pieces, keys and semi-keys and the rest of us searched through the rest of the purchase, sorting according to the owners instructions, looking for anything that might be of value. Mixed feelings. This is probably a realistic reaction from a coin shop to someone’s collection....which makes it a bit disheartening watching the way you handle them in all the ways we’re all told not to, declare stuff as junk/worthless/nothing special, throw coins around, drop them... A lot of people would love to have some of these coins! For many amateur collectors, it’s the history and collecting that are the exciting part. Proof sets in plastic are a bit soulless. It’s a bit sad how for you it’s all about the 💰 but I get that you’re a commercial outfit so need to make a profit. But that’s someone’s life’s collection you’re handling there. Slight 😕 for those of us collecting who like the coins themselves and don’t have the cash/inclination to just buy proof sets of rare dates...

Would be cool if you were to have knowledge and share it. Why does certain things make them not worth it? I’m speaking for the amateur that’s wanting to get into coins or just stocking up medals. Any info helps.
@TreasureTownCoins
@TreasureTownCoins 5 жыл бұрын
Hey alpacacide.. in what case are you asking? Coins are often valuable if they have precious metal content, age (especially US coins, which has by far the strongest market), rarity (low amount made), and good condition (not much wear). Medals are often less valuable since the interest is lower, likely because the government makes coins while medals can be made by anyone (though in some cases medals are also very valuable).

I just took hundreds of these type of coins to my bank over 700 dollars worth. Just not worth my time trying to sell stuff for a few cents. I’m not a collector and don’t get why people spend so much time and effort collecting stuff like this when your time can be spent on better things like building a business or learning how to invest. But that’s just me.
