Just for some clarification: The Freddie Mercury one is a bit hazy. We have no way of knowing really.

I met Huggbees at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. The reason he refused to plead guilty or not guilty wasn't to stall the trial, he knew as soon as he was arrested that he was going to die, but he had children at home and a large plot of land for farming. The way the law worked in this area at this time, if you were found guilty of witchcraft the local government took your property aka your children would not be allowed to inherit it. So by refusing to plead and getting pressed to death he avoided the trial and so was never officially sentenced and the government was not able to seize his property from his children.
