Great video Humble as always. A week or so ago my 2013 gti started idle revving. It would go up to over 2k rpm at stops a couple times before returning to normal. (750 rpm or so) Seeing this video and others forum posts on this problem made me think the pvc was the likely problem. Turns out my local auto store carries just the diaphragm hockey puck sized part of the pvc. So with a little work i snapped out the old and just like you mention, the diaphragm was torn. Put in the replacement and its back to normal. thanks again for your vids.

Huge, huge help. My 2010 CC had been giving me the Cylinder 3 Misfire code several months ago. I assumed it was the notorious carbon buildup and not being ready to drop the cash for repair decided to experiment with a can of Seafoam. Problem solved, no codes for 3 months! A week ago my car died while backing out of the drive one morning. No code; effortless restart. ??? A few days ago I was hit with the P2187 code and a very erratic idle. Your mention of the whistling noise struck a note with me; I'd heard that sound off and on for about a month, always at idle after highway driving. It seems you have perfectly described my issue. Parts are ordered. Thanks for saving me a lot of money at the shop.

Hey Charles. Thanks for your videos. I have a question concerning the operation of the pcv system on the 2.0 Tfsi (BWA). If I disconnect the hose that goes to the intake manifold, should it still be vacuum in the crankcase (suction from the rear port that goes to the turbo inlet)?? If I do so on my car, I get a slight overpressure in the crankcase (I can feel it when I open the oil cap). So, I'm not sure if the crankcase vents properly when on boost... The car runs perfect, and I just complain about the oil consumption after 200.000km. Stock Pcv membrane broke at about 80.000km some years ago and I feel that oil consumption has increased since then with the new pcv. Running on 5w30 by the way. Maybe it's time to switch for a 5w40. Greetings from Catalonia.

Thanks for posting, it helped me. My 2009 Passat engine (1.8 TSI BZB) was shaking badly in the morning after a very cold night outside and had misfire error codes. In the end, the PVC was ok, but the crankshaft seal to the gearbox was leaking. I think the PVC froze and built up pressure. I replaced the PCV and the sealing ring as well as the clutch (reinforced version) at the same time (yes, the gearbox had to come out of course, grrr). Now the engine is running better than before. Best regards from southern Germany

Thanks for the video. Definitely looks like a DIY replacement. I did however want to make sure I don't change mine unnecessarily. Would you always hear a whistling noise? Or for just some type failures? I suspect mine may be bad, but I don't hear a noise. I do have a leaking seal. Can a bad PCV cause a car to stall? My 2008 Passat LUX (2.0 TSI) with 173,000 miles will run for a bout 15 to 20 minutes and then stall. Once stalled, it will only run for a few minutes at a time. Originally, it would not even crank until it sat for 45+ minutes. I have replaced the fuel filter (definitely needed it), and now it will crank almost immediately, but not run for long. The feedback I've seen would indicate to next look at the Control Module for the in tank pump. Next would be the in tank pump and / or the high pressure pump. I did see someone mention that the PCV valve caused their passat to stall - not sure if that was unique or common.

Is it true, that if you take off your intake to do a carbon cleaning, and the carbon build up is moist and oily, that's a sign of a bad PVC? Recently read this somewhere, but I can't it again.

I'd let the engine cool for a couple hours, I noticed the alloy rocker cover was still hot, the bolts weren't too difficult to undo, but noticed some fine metal slithers on some of the bolts, some of which didnt seem to nip up so well on re-assembly. WOW!! I need to thank you so much for this video, it saved my ass. I had NO clue why my 09 Jetta Wolfsburg was screaming at me (squealing so loud), I assumed a pulley or something belt related, never heard such a consistent squealing before. We than got a bunch of misfire error codes and P0507 which lead us to you. The car has been misfiring for over a year and no dealership or shop has been able to figure out why, I kept following the symptoms and replacing coil packs. Finally a shop told me "MAYBE" it's a dirty fuel injector which is a bigger fix on the wolfsburg because you have to take apart the engine more than most other cars. Instead of going down that route we started running fuel injector cleaner at every fill up for months, it seemed to help but the car still had misfires while starting up. We were driving around and the car seemed to be driving fine than out of thin air started the loudest squeal ever, of course we were downtown and everyone was looking at us like we were idiots. Long story short the only way I was sure of the problem was by watching your video and I found the diaphragm under the pcv valve cap/cover was torn just like you said they do. The PCV valve was also very built up with hydrocarbons and oil but I cleaned it out nicely. Now I'm looking for a replacement for the cap and diaphragm. I followed forums and people are recommending the "Dorman 917-064 PCV Diaphragm Repair Kit for Volkswagen" which you can get on amazon for less than $20. Hopefully that will come soon, car is out of service until than.

Hello Humble Mechanic, thanks for the vid. I have a 2010 Tiguan. I am getting misfire codes from Cylinders 1,2, and 3. No other codes. I do not here air being sucked in to the small relief hole on the valve. However, when I pulled the hose that runs from the PCV to the intake (the hose toward the front of the Tiguan) there was oil dripping from the valve. Not much but a few drips. But slightly wet in the tube as well. Does this point to a bad PCV? In 2016 / 40,000 miles ago, VW replaced the faulty intake and did the carbon clean while it was off. Could carbon already be built up enough to cause the misfires if its not the PCV? Last thing, I moved the coils to different cylinders to see if I would get a code on cylinder 4. But nothing changed, still same codes on cyl 1, 2, and 3. Any ideas?

Question, I just took my 2011 GTI to the dealer for oil leaks. The diagnosis was that the rear main seal is leaking bad, but also noted was the turbo recirculation valve and inlet tube was seeping oil, possible failure of turbo seals...which is more expensive to fix than the rear main seal. My question is, if there were no check engine lights or anything on at the time, would there be any way to actually know if the PCV valve might have caused some of this? I did have some idling issues back in the summer to where it would idle rough on a cold start and was enough to get the check engine light to come on for a cylinder #3 misfire. I thought maybe due to me not using good gas, so started using 93 and a can of sea foam and the light went off and car has run fine ever since.

Just been in touch with the dealership today who has been really helpful told me they have done the pcv and main seal and software update. How successful is this stage one fix? I'm not to confident with the amount of oil it was using. Is this likely to fix it? Thanks.

Hey bro I got a question about the rear pcv hose on the 2.0 fsi I got a bag recirculating catch can and in three months with it I haven't collect any oil on it so I have an oil leak on that hose and I was wondering what if I remove the check valve on that hose?

Got a "system lean at idle" code yesterday in my wife's 2013 tiguan. I suspected a vacuum leak. On inspection I took the engine cover off. I found that hole on the side of the PCV valve to be sucking in a bunch of air like you mentioned. I'll try the Diaphragm repair kit and see how it goes. Thanks!

+Humblemechanic, I have a 09 Passat with 75000 miles that is leaking oil from the rear engine seal. I noticed that you said that the PCV valve can cause oil leaks from this area, but would it cause oil leaks elsewhere too? My calve cover is starting to "seep" from the edges and my timing cover is also leaking on the bottom. The majority of the oil is coming from the rear main seal. I just recently put it on a lift and started her up. About 5 min in I could see it starting to seep from the drain hole at the bottom of the flywheel housing. After about 15 min I was starting to actually drip oil. I did replace just my diaphragm to the PCV valve, but I didn't see anything wrong with it when I tested it as you recommended. Should I take that part back and buy an actual VW part, or give the generic brand a chance. This is the first time that I have replaced that part, and all of my maintenance has been done through the dealership. Thanks

brandon dupuis The failing PCV can cause oil leaks anywhere in the engine. It will start with the weakest point, but can cause issues other places. Sadly once the leaks start, they need to be repaired. It becomes a 2 part repair. Replace the PCV and replace the leaking seal. I did a video on the rear main seal if you want to check that out too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hp-Ggqxq0t-umas.html

I might have a faulty PCV on my 2013 GTI, but I'm not sure. When idling sometimes I can feel the engine 'stumble' like it miss-fired. There is no change to the rpm on the tachometer, I simply feel these 'stumbles' every few seconds. The dealer did a 'scan' on the engine, but reported "no codes stored". They also told me that VW engines normally idle a bit rough because they are designed for high performance. But I think maybe they are just giving me the run-around because the car is still under warranty. If there are 'no codes stored' does that mean there is no problem? Or should I take it back to the dealer and ask them to test the PCV?

Hi HumbleMechanic, would this cause misfire under load? My Mk7 GTI would throw epc light and misfiring cyl4 and hide cylinder above 5000rpm. I checked and replaced coils and plugs but the problem still persists.

Just wondering if there has been any later revisions to the OEM PCV for the MK6 (I know the mk7 GTI seems to have an updated one...). I replaced mine back in 2016/2017, but do experience extreme smoking in autocross if I have to brake hard then turn hard left then accelerate out of a corner. So based on what I've read I probably need to add a catchcan in line too (want to keep it class legal...)

Do oil leak from the rear breather hose and into the air intake pipe is also due to a bad PCV valve?

My EA888 2.0 TSI gen 1 started to leak oil on spots such as the air intake and discharge pipes, which were often found wet. They diagnosed it at the dealer's shop as a faulty/worn turbo. Turbo was changed (upgraded to a K04, actually) but the wet intake and discharge pipes persisted, could this PCV valve be the issue?

First of all, you are a legend! 2. Is it possible to replace the only the rubber diaphram? mine is sucking a little amount of air so I suspect the rubber is starting to fail? 3. Is itpossible to open the valve on top and inspect the rubber diaphram without totally recking the part?

Just came across this today. Would this cause a tapping sound when it fails? My sons coil pack went out and now it taps between the #3 and #4 cylinder, right where this sits on his cc. We changed the plugs when we put in the new coil pack. The lobes on the camshaft are in perfect condition no marring or scoring. I can feel the impacts on the black plastic more than the valve cover. Any ideas?

It's possible make the engine run properly without the PCV or even the Valve Cover installed. You just need to Disconnect the MAF sensor and Start the engine.

Hey Charles would a pcv vale cause decent oil consumption? I have a 2015 Tiguan that is burning oil that is mostly seen on cold stat ups (32 f and colder)? Other than that there are no codes and the car runs fine . I had 1 code 3.mths ago for a o/2 sensor that I cleared but never came back.its burning a 1/2 liter a week.

Think I may change mine. Have some misfires dancing around cylinders. Already fixed a misfire once with new coil packs. Looked at this last night I see a bit of oil around the outside of the diaphragm. I don't think oil should be getting out of that.

Just wondering on a 2011 GTI 2.0L turbo would a crankshaft position sensor cause the vehicle to through misfire codes and barely idle? A friends kid bought the car with 123,000 miles on it and the other night it just started misfiring and wont idle hardly at all. Should i be looking at replacing the PCV valve and hosing assembly? We did replace the plugs and coil packs and still no change. Should i also check the timing chain tensioner?
