Awesome. I am going to have to rent that. I was afraid of the small sensor which is why I did not get that body. I prefer a larger sensor but I understand the intended use of the R3 and why it is a 24 megapixel sensor. I do like the features and thought about it a lot. I now have it in my rental cart LOL. 🙏💖🤗 PS - I will have an R3 here Friday at the latest to try with the 200-800. What I am afraid of since it is such an amazing camera is really loving it and then buying it..... LOL.

Thank you, thank you!!! Oh no, nothing is perfect - no set up, body or lens or combo - none of it. I get so many crap shots all the time. I am working on a video where talking about just that and I will show some of the many shots I get that are out of focus. Even using the top of the line Canon R3 with a $13,000 lens..... it is not perfect. It just makes me happy to be out taking photos. The other thing is that some set ups are better for certain things. When the spring is in full swing, I will be out with either the R7 and 100-500 or the R3 and 100-500 because that is the perfect lens for close up frame filling critters. My friend James still shoots and old Nikon D500 and I think what he gets is amazing. The greatest magic behind any photo is the person behind the camera. Go out, have fun and let your vision come through, and not what someone says is the best way to do it. A lot of folks that watch my channel talk about weight, clarity or cost - I try to tailor towards that. But bottom line go out and have fun. Hanging out and meeting folks out there for me is more important than an amazing shot. Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting me share with you!!! 🙏🤗💖

What I’ve noticed is the depth of quality and color is far superior on my 100-500 over the 800mm. I was considering buying the L 800 but truthfully, these do a great job with the shots. Of course the 100 to 500 is an L lens and it’s clear by the quality. The price is really good.

I agree with you 100%. I noticed that when editing the photos for this video. I did enjoy shooting the EF 800mm (that is the photo I have of me at the end with that lens). I LOVED that but it is heavier than the new 600 F4. I get the same results with the 600 F4 and a 1.4 extender that lives on that lens..... but it gets heavy. The 100-500 also with a 1.4 extender is a set up I really like a lot. You lose zoom, but the quality of the images is simply outstanding. And, it is lightweight and you just can beat the short minimum focus. 🙏💖🤗

I'm new to your channel and just subscribed. I don't know what camera you shot the video on. I do know that my R6 sometimes struggles to focus when the background is very busy, which might explain both lenses' struggles too. The R6 II supposedly has the R3's superior AF. I hope and expect the R5 II to get it too. Maybe you could find a less-busy background and do this comparison again. Cheers!
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 3 ай бұрын
I may do this comparison again using the R3. For this video, I shot with the R7. I had an ND8 and a polarizer and I think that effected the AF having both on there. Usually, I just use a variable ND filter and don't have that problem. The other camera I use is my old Sony video camera and the focus was perfect on that with only the ND8 - it always is. I preferred the fuller presentation using the Canon footage and thought hat the focus played into the presentation as well since I was showing the way each loses focus - it happens to ALL lenses and set ups. Thank you for finding me!!!! If you watch others of my videos, you will see in focus video LOL - this was a conscious choice. I also use a GoPro as something quick and lite. And for audio I use..... LOL. This background was where I was shooting and perfect for the light those lenses need. If it is sunny next time, I use these there, I will be in the same place with only the Sony camera and it SHOULD be perfect. If not..... ah well. I will have the GoPro going as well. Now if I am using a follow gimbal, I use a Canon as it is the one that works the best on the Hohem gimbal that prefer over the DJI ones. It is small but of all the gimbals I have used, it ended up being the one I like the most. LOL - I love my gear. 🙏💖🤗 PS - answering comments and wanted to share an older video with you - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7WdgJSJ1526oGw.html&lc=Ugxc8dCvMN8W1wI3NQ54AaABAg This was shot with one of my Canon cameras and the focus is awesome. I think it was the stacked filters. I noticed something like that one time when using a combo filer that was an ND and polarizer in one. I did not care for it for just that reason.

@@JohnDrummondPhoto Thank you for letting me know about your channel - just hit the subscribe button! Got half way though Shooting Shore Birds and realized I was getting side-tracked in and sucked in. Will go back to it shortly when done with comments while processing photos!! I tried the Rode II and I love the safety record feature but I prefer a lav mic so that did not work for me. When I use the GoPro, I have A Tascam that is usually used for weddings that records a high gain and low gain dual audio - it works...... My favorite is my Deity system directly into the camera but that does not record a safety track like the Rode. For the last couple of days, I have been shooting the R3 with the 200-800 and my 600 F4 to see how amazing it is with stacked sensors. I love a lot of it but still prefer the R5. Looking forward to see what the R5 II or the R1 will offer. And as far as shooting mechanical like you did on your belly - I will shoot that way all the time until they no longer offer that feature. For me, I prefer the tactile feel and sound. Not as loud as my old Nikon D800!!! 🙏💖🤗

Great video! I'd like to see a similar comparison of hummers and butterflies 100-500 vs 200-800. Specifically can you get more bird in the frame with the closer min focus of the 100-500 or the more reach of the 200-800. Maybe even just shoot a static subject to see.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 3 ай бұрын
Hands down... the 100-500 even with a 14 extender on there. I would take that over the 200-800 if that is all I was shooting. When spring gets here, I will be shooting my butterflies and dragonflies with the 100-500. The awesome MFD just cant be beat. The other thing I prefer on the 100-500 since it is a smaller lens is the ease of access to the focus ring. On the 200-800 when it is extended to 800, the balance is off so the hand moves forward. It is harder to get BACK to the focus ring and that is why I mention how awesome it is on the 800 F11. 🙏💖🤗

Great presentation, Johnny. I commented on one of your earlier videos re my indecision between the 1-500 or 2-800 on an R6 and you almost had me sold on the latter lens. BUT... I have both the RF600 & 800 f11 and do you know I hardly ever use either. Also I've got the ef 100-400 ii and an R7 for extra reach, plus a 1.4 iii tc if I need to go further - I can live with af issues and slight degradation of image quality. But when on walkabout I like to also take landscape and insects and the missus always wants a portrait, so I think I might go for the RF 100 2.8 (I can get this for GBP 830) for the R6 which can be easily carried with the R7-with-zoom so I don't have to switch lenses. Apologies for rambling but thank you, my friend, you have saved me a shedload of money! I'll maybe look at the 2-800 later in the year when all the fuss has died down and the discounts and cashbacks kick in. All the best from sunny England!

The addition of an extension tube(s) to the RF 800 solved the close focus issues for me. If, and when, my back ordered RF200-800 ever arrives, I'll be anxious to see how close extension tubes will allow me to get to a subject.

Another informative video. Living now in Wyoming. I am using a R5 with the 100-500 RF lens. I am finding it too short to shoot Antelope, Deer and Meadowlarks on the barbed wife fence. I also shoot landscapes and storms on the prairie using a 15-35mm. I would like to obtain an additional camera body so I would not have to change lenses so much. Also the short reach of the 100-500 on the prairies is just not getting the job done. I have been thinking of picking up a 2x teleconverter for the 100-500 or a 800mm f/11. Your thoughts. Maybe a used R5 or R6 or a R7 that being a crop sensor body with the 800mm. Just a serious hobbyist. The R5 and the 100-500 lens was great when I lived in MS shooting birds and close in deer. On the prairies it is a different challenge.

Well, I would recommend a 1.4 extender with your 100-500 and put that on the R7. That give you 1120mm and the photos, at least for me, are soooooo sharp. The 100-500, in my opinion and in my use, is the sharpest of the 3 lenses even with the 1.4 extender. And since you have the 100-500, you are already half way there. I would recommend you rent a set up to try it before you buy. I just rented an R3 and really enjoyed most of it. Since the R7 and extenders have been out for a while, they should be in stock at a rental house. I rent from Lensrentals.com and have been happy with their amazing service. I do like to crop and so for me, I want it sharp and a large sensor to have more information to crop into. 🙏💖🤗

One thing to keep in mind is that for the price of a used RF800 F11 one can buy that lens and an R8 Body for the price of the 2-800 lens and you won't even be stuck with the just center focusing with the R8.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 3 ай бұрын
That is interesting. I thought that the limited center only focusing is part of the 800 F11 lens to make it more affordable. Since I do not shoot it on the R7, I have not really noticed how that would be effected using it on the R7. The R8 being a full frame camera like the R5, I would think that the center limited focus as part of the lens would be the same on the R8 as the R5! 🙏💖🤗

What are you using for a tripod shoe on the 800 mm?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Ай бұрын
Canon makes one, but I have some light extenders used to mount lights and stands to other lights and stands. It has a 1/4-20 thread and the larger 5/8. I screw that into the lens, then add my arcaswiss plate on to the bottom. Simple, cheap and it just works. I also use it when I put my construction strap around the lens to carry it. Simple and effective. 🙏🙏💖🤗

The 800mm f/11 is simply stunning lens, I just regret not buying it sooner. here are just a few things that would make potential version II perfect: *close focusing distance reduced to 2.5m *proper tripod collar, or ability to rotate camera mount up by 90ˇ *included lens hood

I agree on all of those. I know you can buy the aftermarket mount I think it is (I sue some light stand extensions) and a hood that would fit but it would be nice if it came with it. For what the F11 lens is, it is a pretty awesome little little lens. You can use 3rd party extension tubes to shorten the MFD but then you lose the long distance ability. Ah well. 🙏💖🤗

Until I have access to a 200-800 I won't know if is it as sharp or sharper than a 100-400Lii with a x2, but is is RF not EF. What software do you use for your video, I like the way you use Zoom. At the moment I am stuck with Movie Maker, as since I had a haircut I cannot access my other laptop, Microsoft 30 day exclusion! I have DaVinci on that.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 3 ай бұрын
I would think that as a newer RF lens, the 200-800 will be sharper that the 100-400 with an extender, but I only have the EF V1 of the 100-400 so I can not speak to that from experience. The RF 100-400 is a slower lens but it is actually sharper than the V1 as an RF lens. For video editing I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I have used DaVinci when I thought about switching and saving money but I am so familiar with Adobe after using it for so long, it is quicker for me. I also think the audio is better in Adobe and that is something that I have not heard anyone talk about. 🙏💖🤗
