what is the R50 and R100 missing for wildlife that the rest of the lineup is not? is it that 1/8000ths shutter speed is it better ISO?

Hi Jonny - Another wonderful video - As I said before I use the R50 with the RF 100-400 and the 1.4 extender to give me 225-895 equivalent focal length - this was the cheapest AI autofocus system combo I could find to get me to that 800mm sweet spot ($1800) - I am still amazed at the results - I process my Craw images in Lightroom for iPad ($4.99 a month) on the ($400) cheapest iPad and print them on a Canon Pro 200 ($499) printer at up to A3+ As I said before you don't have to spend megabucks to produce great quality work. Look forward to the next video.

I just brought the 100-400 with me on a trip and it did deliver very sharp and beautiful images of herons when I was having some rest in a park between tour stops. Absolutely amazing how much this light-weight lens can do even on a not-so-clear a day. With the hood reversely put on, it's about the size of an old EF200 F2.8 L lens, and about half the weight, and an extra 200mm reach.

Great video! I just started using my custom presets options and set C1 up to lower shutter speed lower iso for still birds and C2 for higher shutter speed with a iso bump. This way when I am waiting for a humming bird I can just bump the one knob and grab regular birds and then bump it back to C2 high speed when I am anticipating the humming bird. So far its working out and is faster than trying to adjust each setting in the moment.

My pleasure!!! I just put one up showing hand held video. I shoot everything in 30 fps. If I am shooting me for a video, I am in manual on any of my stuff, I use a shutter speed of 1/60, as low of an aperture as the lens I am using, auto ISO and a variable ND filter gauging exposure via the histogram. For the video I was shooting of the wildlife, the setting I started like the most was intelligent auto - the green button and I was really enjoying AI focus and I was using servo as well. I did end up buying one so I will be able to go through it more in depth instead of just setting it up so I could go out. I hope this helps! 🙏🤗💖

Could you please show an example of the video or photos, taking pictures of the birds with the same lens and camera, before the sunrise, somewhere in the wild? Interesting to see the real focus and the possibility to catch the object and stabilize it from the distance of at least 40-50 ft? I'm using Sony RX10 M3 and with the same light and distance - the result would be absolutely the same or sharper.

For sunrise shots, I am usually shooting the sunrise - with a short lens and a timer on a tripod. 🙏🤗💖

The R50 and 100-400 is really unbeatable (is it?) at that price. My problem is that it’s not weather sealed, otherwise I would buy it in an instant 😮
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 2 күн бұрын
That is not an issue in my opinion because...... I love shooting in the rain. I keep rain covers in each of my bags and have been out many times with non sealed gear that I have covered up. Even my weather sealed stuff - although I have shot it uncovered - I still keep that covered as well. Heck, I have even used plastic bags and even a torn rain poncho when I first got the 200-800. Dont let that be something that holds you back. Keep some of the gel packs in your bag so that when you get back to your car, remove the plastic and put your gear in your bag, the gel sill suck up any of the moisture that might be there. It works perfectly! 🙏🤗💖

Hey Johhny. Love your videos. If you edit with Adobe or Topaz Photo AI, I suggest you crank up the shutter speed and forget about ISO. I got some shots recently at ISO 16000 and even 25600 that Topaz cleaned up amazingly.

Oh yes, I use Adobe Lightroom Classic to edit and I do use the noise reduction in Lightroom as well as masks. I do still prefer a lower ISO, (the old school in me) but I have shot up to 12800 as well. The crop sensor body seems to be a bit more noisy at a higher ISO over my R3 or R5, but the R50 was just a beast of a camera body - ESPECIALLY for the price. I was impressed even with the rolling shutter! . 🙏🤗💖

Hey Johnny Pink… love the videos 👏 I have the canon r10 and the rf 100-400 as a lightweight walk around and I’m constantly blown away with the results. Wild Alaska has a complete setup for the r10 which I shamelessly copied 😂 giving single point on the back button focus and another button next to the shutter to switch to eye detect, it might work for the r50 🤷‍♂️ manual focus kicks in on mine when I turn the focus ring on the lens. Might be worth a look, keep up the good work! 👍😊 Stu.

I have my other Canons set up that way as well. The R7 has more button to program, like the R3 and R5, so I have one set of single and one for eye AF. This little body is more like my old M50 in some of the ways it handles and what it will do. But even still - it was REALLY REALLY fun to shoot. I did my best to set this up the same way but the entry level limitations within it went only so far as far as programing. 🙏🤗💖

good for daylight, questionable at least when using it on sunset or sunrise for wildlife. I would rather pick R7+100-400 or 100-500 if i can afford. Once you enjoyed and used IBIS (with EF or vintage glass w/o IS), its nearly impossible to use a camera without IBIS again
@JonnyPink65

I agree with you to a point! The RF 100-400 is not a low light lens - the 200-800 is not a low light lens and the 100-500 is not so much either. After years of using DSLRs (no IBIS) and long lenses that also had none, I just kept my shutter speed a bit higher. I actually found many things I prefer with the R50 over the R7 as I continue to go through photos. Each set up has advantages and disadvantages. I do like the photos on both bodies better using the 100-500 and you have the extra reach plus it is L glass. With image stabilization in the lens and Canon's being so good, i did not notice the difference even hand holding video at the max focal length. I really, really enjoyed this set up - it was a lot of fun!! 🙏🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 Nice to know! I can expect it also to be nice to use, especially with the small and light 100-400, the R7 feels already for me too big and heavy when using lets say a RF 50 1.8, any tiny vintage 50mm or similar. Today i was driving to a nice spot with bee eaters, met there people with a 600mm F4 and 1,4 TC on R5. Hella setup, nice images, wonderful handling with a monopod. But carrying? packing into a regular backpack? Not so nice! I had my 150-600 Sigma on the R7 and it was awesome enough! And i need to pack light and small because im enjoying often and especially for such no-car zones my performance scooter (real 70-90 km range) You see, even 150-600 Sigma + R7 is already "light" for me, RF 800 F11 anyways the lightest tele i have. I hope Canon releases a 100-500 RF-S or similar (maybe 200-600?), smaller and in some specs better than the full frame version but APS-C only and similar price. Even if its just a with a FF lens with speedbooster/0,7x converter glued to it.

While the AF did miss on some shot when it hits this is a great combo that is hard to beat on price and weight. It will be the prefect camping/birding companion for me. I plan to put it to the test very soon at my favorite lakes to see what it can do. Will it replace my a7CR and 200-600 Sony lens as my main setup? No but it's pretty impressive for what it is and will be by my side when we camp. Thanks for the video.

Hi John - Another excellent video. Thanks for including my images. I thought they looked fantastic not that I am biased of course 😊😊. I really like the RF 100-400 plus 1.4 Extender combo. It is amazing value for money - very light - and gives good results in decent light. But what you may overlook compared with the RF 100-500 is that the Extender works throughout the zoom range giving 225-896 equivalent focal length on the R50 the 100-500 is restricted to 300-500 with the Extender giving 672-1120 equivalent focal length which is much too long at the short end for many of the shots I take. In summary the 100-400 is much more flexible - smaller - lighter and provides amazing performance for the money.😊😊😊
