Here I go over good, hummingbird feeders that are good for orioles, and grape jelly and how harmful to hummingbirds it is. Be aware of issues so you can keep your hummingbirds safe, and your orioles happy. Remember, 1/4 cup White Sugar and 1 cup Water. Certain feeders that are now being made, can actually end a Hummingbird’s life and this is what I’m going to get into and why. Because, as the sticky jelly, it, glues their feathers and body, where they have no ability to fly once they are covered in this.

I want to thank you so much for opening my eyes re feeding jelly to orioles. I have never done it, I am 70 years old, and up until this year I never put out the jelly. Not sure why. Somehow I Just didn’t feel right about doing it. This year, two days ago to be exact, I put out some grape jelly into a newly purchased Oriole feeder. It also has orange halves prongs on this feeder. The only bird I have seen at this feeder so far is a cat bird. He seems to love the jelly. He does not touch the orange. My hummingbird feeders are on the opposite side of my house. I shall remove the jelly as to your recommendation. First thing tomorrow. I am on Cape Cod, East coast, USA. By the way, I LOVE your channel. So many great ideas. Many thanks for your great ideas and advice. Val, Falmouth, Ma.❤

How sad. I don’t think I’d ever think of putting uncovered jelly outside. The bugs would be attracted to the jelly. I’m so glad that you have this knowledge. I love to feed the birds in my yard. Tfs. Have a great evening.🤗

There are even Oriole feeders with places to put orange halves on spikes AND jelly in little open reservoirs. I've considered getting one, because I'm so thrilled to finally live someplace that has an Oriole population.😁 But I'm SO glad I didn't purchase one yet. I will definently look for one that isn't dangerous for hummers, or make one with a mesh covering that prevents hummers from getting jelly on themselves. Thank you Robbie!!! I love my little hummers and would never want to harm them.❤

I’ve been feeding the Orioles jelly for years. They migrate into the central states and we love them . we haven’t done it to hurt any other birds so don’t get your feathers ruffled.😂 Also we tend to love the bugs, and the other birds that eat the jelly. Bees love the jelly. What Robbie has done has taught us optional ways to feed our Orioles that will protect our hummingbirds. We learn as we go through life and this is something that we’re just learning, so we will adapt to protect the Hummers while also enjoying our Orioles. And just a sidenote, nobody can ever get an oriole to eat out of an oriole feeder in this area. The Orioles that come to my yard do not eat the oranges, although other peoples Orioles do.😋🙂 I will keep putting the jelly out, but I will make it safe for the Hummers 🙂

Thanks for the warning. Knowing how sticky jelly is, I imagine it acts like glue, sticking their feathers together and making it impossible to fly. Personally, I've never used it and have had plenty of luck attracting Orioles with just ordinary Hummingbird feeders and nectar. Their hole size seems ample as well without any enlargement needed.

Thank you for your public service message! Also important is not to use commercial red dye sugar water for hummers. According to Jean Roper, the Hummingbird Lady in Lomita who does hummer rescue, it gives them blood clots and they die. So white sugar water only 1/4 cup white sugar to 1 cup filtered water (I use a Berkey Water Filter). I also clean the feeders really well so no slimy mold from the sun. Occasionally I do a 5% bleach solution dip so all bacterial and mold is dead and a very good rinse out and air dry before refilling. Yellow and red colors are the only colors that hummers see so be sure your feeders have both. I enlarged the holes with a hot plastic shish kabab stick and propane torch or gas burner to heat up the rod. One great idea on KZfaq, was to hang a plastic frisbee over each feeder for shade so the sugar water does not heat up or spoil as fast and they get shade while drinking. Thank you for your amazing garden, your dedication to nurture these marvels of nature, and your compassion. Very commendable, and great to see. I've done animal rescue since I was a toddler literally. Giving back to wild species is a joy.

It’s so fun learning. We here in the central states have been feeding jelly to the Orioles for years. During the months of April-June ,when migration is peak, you can hardly buy grape jelly in the store. I’ve always stocked up through the winter so I didn’t have to worry about running around finding it. During that peak migration, I’ll go through two jars of jelly a day . I will now be adapting how I put it out☺️

You're right about not being aware of this. I had no idea that birds even liked jelly. I know I certainly can't stand to get anything sticky on me it drives me crazy so I can't imagine what it would be like for poor little hummingbird to get something like jelly all over themselves and with their long beaks not be able to get the sticky off of themselves it must be terrifying for them. I hope this video keeps playing and playing and that it reaches people all over the world. Cause I'm sure that people that do feed birds would love to know this information and will immediately stop feeding jelly or sticky things to birds or any animals I think a big part of it is getting the education out there to learn about what not to give birds because there's really no information out there about it so thank you for sharing this video and teaching me something that I had no idea about I'm so very grateful to you for that. So come on all the bird loving people out there in the world just stop giving birds jelly or anything sticky that can harm any other birds or animals. And watch this video and learn all about it. Thank you again for doing this video and teaching me something that I had know idea about and I've never even ever given it much thought until just now today at 6pm in the evening. Ok take care.

Great suggestions, as always! I’m also in SoCal. For a while I was putting grape jelly on an oriole feeder. But what I found was that the orioles mostly ignored it and fed on sugar water from the larger holes in my hummingbird feeder instead, where the yellow plastic flowers had broken off. It was mainly the house finches that gobbled up the jelly and sometimes a mockingbird,. That feeder was always such a mess that I had to wash it daily. Eventually I stopped using it, and I still have plenty of orioles all summer. Incidentally, the large flower-less holes in the hummingbird feeder also attract ladder backed woodpeckers. Lately with temperatures above 100° F, I’ve seen the woodpeckers sometimes drink sugar water first, and then drink plain water from a hanging birdbath before departing.

Thank you for this! Give us more tips on how to keep our hummingbirds safe. I have orioles visiting for the first time. They spook more easily than my hummingbirds so I can't get a good look, but they are bigger and I worry for my hummingbirds. I considered getting a separate jelly feeder so they would stop trying to use the hummingbird feeder. I won't do that now.

Orioles come here during winter and leave before the weather gets really hot for the jelly to be sticky. I have never seen a hummingbird going into the grape jelly but it is good to be aware of it. Another thing to consider is the suet that in warm weather it can melt and get into the birds feathers and hurt them. I feed (my) birds: orange, apple, banana, mango, sweet lime, mandarine, etc. but they love oranges the most then the apples. For the hummingbirds I do prepare the water-sugar nectar and for other birds I give them also a mix of grains. I do it everyday. Thank you for your advice!

Thank you for this! Last Fall I had a male and female oriole show up for the first time ever. I looked them up to see what to feed them and jelly was one of the offerings I put out. They loved it. This Spring the female came back and took twine and other bits from my yard for her nest, but they didnt visit the feeder at all. So I removed the jelly and fruit and left only the sugar water which the hummingbirds drink. I did plan on putting jelly back in the fall for them if they return. This gives me some time to devise a covered feeder. All the ones I see in the store, sadly, are open dishes.

I don't have a lot but I do have potted flowers and plants that are supposed to attract hummers and have one fountain thanks to learning, from you, about the solar pumps. I know there are hummingbirds in the area as I've seen them a few blocks away at feeders, but they don't come to my feeders. Any other suggestions as to how I can attract the hummingbirds? I put out the homemade nectar and change it every few days since I live in Florida and it's really hot here. My fountain and feeders are in the sun as I have no real shade. Anyway, thanks for any further advice you can offer and thank you for such an informative website. Keep doing what you're doing, you're making a difference. Have a great day...Judy :)

This might give you a laugh...My husband and I have trained ourselves to NOT swat at anything buzzing our ears. It's often not a bee or beetle, but a curious hummer keeping tabs on what we are up to or telling us to get off our fanny and refill the feeders :-)

One time I found a sticky covered hummingbird right underneath on of my feeders, I called the wildlife rehabber and got instructions on how to bathe the hummingbird and she flew off, yeah! Not sure what happened, its a mystery but it must have been a fluke occurrence because I never had another problem..... except the time a hummingbird got stuck in a spider web so I saved that one too

Question: how do I get my charm of hummingbirds to recognize the water fountain? Fountain is within 6 feet of feeder, elevated, plants within 2 feet. I live on a mountain. I suppose our birds are not accustomed to running water, fountains. Thanks. I have followed you for years

I only feed the Orioles sugar water and I have a lot of them. I only use hummingbirds feeders, the Orioles likes the nature made feeders.

I happen to use the same feeder for both Hooded Orioles and hummers. However, the jelly is deposited in the central "moat" of the feeder and the hummers appear smart enough to go only for the nectar thru the tiny holes. There is a water trap above the feeder to discourage ants and crawling insects.

I am in northern Utah. Our hummingbird know which feeders are theirs. We watch them out the kitchen window. We also have Bullock's Orioles. For some reason the orioles do not drink the sugar water anymore but they will eat orange halves and go crazy for grape jelly. The orioles have their own larger nectar feeders. I have two types. The Aspect's orange disc feeder and the old Perky Pet Deluxe glass colibri feeder. some years back the orioles stopped going to the nectar feeders. Do you know why they would stop? As for the jelly the hummingbirds have never gone near it. I also have a bird bath fountain in the back yard and I have seen the hummingbirds hover in the running water when it gets hot.

When I put out grape jelly once or twice the only thing I attract are ants and bugs so I stopped. Thank you for this information though I would not have known if you had not posted your video.

People see and hear about things. They don't think what causes they might be doing. What a good idea, even if it's not. It's sad what some are doing to this little bird. I'm not putting out jelly because of heat, the ants, wild cat, and dogs that won't stay home. Plus, my brother dog eats everything. So 2 different feeders is a good idea. Thanks for the tip and lesson.

I keep my grape jelly separated from my hummer feeders. HOWEVER, more importantly👈 don’t feed your birds HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP jelly. I use the “natural” grape jelly, made with cane sugar.

Hi Robbie this is off topic but I live in Michigan do you know if we get humming birds here? Since I've been watching your channel I want to try to attract those little beautiful birds...

Yes, you have a couple species of hummingbirds in Michigan. You would have to put a feeder out where they can see it and hope they’re in your area. The flowers will also bring them in. ❤

I offer meal worms and whole stone fruits that visit. They will eat that way more than the hummer feeders. Ps. Love the habitat. The jelly feeder is awesome. Going to try that.😊

Robbie I never had Orioles until a few months ago. I got another feeder that was a 10 hole feeder that has the holes like u have Then came the Orioles & a mockingbird. They seem to get a long. Is it ok if the hummingbirds & Orioles drying out of the same feeder?

Texas- How do you get so many hummingbirds. We can get 2-3, but out of that one becomes a bully and chases off the other two any suggestions? Love birds too!

I have a question for you. I found a recipe that’s 1 cup of grape jelly, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and squeeze an orange. Boil the mixture until til dissolved. The oriels love it, but I saw some hummingbirds on the feeder too. In fact, they were eating the oriels food more than their own. Thoughts?

I'm shocked. I have a jelly feeder. It's not far from my Hummer feeder. The jelly feeder is blue so the hummers haven't shown interest in it (that I know of). But I don't even want to take a chance on hurting my precious little jewels. The only thing that I'm super disappointed about is that house finches really seem to love the jelly and I don't think their beaks could reach inside an oriole feeder to get jelly in there. What if I stopped feeding jelly all together and peeled oranges with a knife and chopped the fruit finely and put that in a bowl for orioles and house finches? Do you think that would be safe for hummingbirds? I'd really like your input.

I put out an oriole nectar feeder, and the orioles won't even touch it. I put out grape jelly, and they instantly go to it. When they run out of grape jelly, they will go to the hummingbird feeder for nectar, but won't even touch their own nectar feeder. The nectar I put in the oriole feeder is the same nectar that the hummingbirds get, and it doesn't make sense to me.
