Hummingbird Spot

Күн бұрын

Come with me on my journey to photograph the rare Blue-bearded Helmetcrest hummingbird, a critically endangered species. This bird lives at an altitude of 10,000 feet in an area accessible only on foot. Our five-day expedition took us to the páramo high in the Santa Marta Mountains of northern Colombia. Less than one hundred people alive today have ever seen this hummingbird. This episode takes us from the town of San Pedro, Colombia to the first campsite.
My name is Carole Turek and I am on a quest to photograph every single hummingbird species on the planet! There are over 350 types and I currently have photographed more than 150 of them.
Come with me virtually as I explore Central and South America to find the most beautiful hummingbirds in the world.

Thank you so much. We saw mom come to feed them, but we were not quick enough to catch her. We filmed and shot our pictures after she had fed them.

Hey Carole, What a great video and so well documented! It reminded me of my trip to Panama seeing the Harpi eagle and Resplendent Quetzal. No trials and camping like you did.... I'm looking forward to next week! Sayin' hey... Greg

Hi Greg! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! The Harpy and Quetzal are magnificent birds! I've seen the Resplendent Quetzal, but the Harpy is still on my list. I hope to see one in Brazil later this year. (If any of us can ever travel again!)

Thanks, Jim! There are other hummingbirds that are going to be difficult to photograph for one reason or another, but this one requires the most physical endurance of all of them. That's why I had to do this now before I got any older, hahaha.

Wow what a hike. I am glad it didn't start pouring down rain or sleeting. I think you did great, all the working out paid off. I love those 2 little fledglings, so adorable. I wonder, on a Helmetcrest bird Hummingbird, when they are born do they have the spiky things, or do those come in with their feathers?? Great job. I remember you typing to us from places you stayed that had WiFi.
@HummingbirdSpot
@HummingbirdSpot 4 жыл бұрын
I would think that those feathers grow in with their adult plumage, but I actually don't have the answer to that! And yes, I was thankful we had good weather. Some of those trails had deep channels with huge logs in them. I remember thinking that those logs got there from water runoff. I wouldn't have wanted to have been caught there in major rains.

Very hard slog Carole. The highest I’ve climbed was about 17,800 ft.. Thing is I was 10 and used to riding my bike up and down the hills of Mexico City... I felt you the whole way.👌👍
