A penniless young boy dreams of marrying the king’s daughter, but he decides not to tell his dream to anyone, not even the king, until the dream comes true.

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Wow, the boy is 13 years old when it starts and is 27 when it ends. That is incredibly realistic compared to the sons and daughters in some tales being very young when they marry

Actually children when they are younger tend to have lighter hair but as they age their hair gets darker. When my mother was a child she was blonde but now she’s a brunette

To be honest, I probably would have lied about the dream just to get people to stop asking, or told the truth without details. "I dreamed I would marry well when I grew up, that I may no longer live in poverty. I didn't want to share because I was ashamed of having such lofty dreams, especially in your presence." (True? Yes. Treason? No.) Guess I'm neither as honest nor as brave as the people in these tales.

Yeah, that's what is just told at the end in the version of this tale arranged by Gyula Illyés in his "77 Hungarian Folk Tales" . He often added some rational explanations.

Back then in my country, a man and woman can't touch eachother or hold hands because that would mean that they're going to wed. Back then, the men would always hold a handkerchief if they were to touch a woman.

He didn't leave the room for seven years... which means he didn't bathe or go to a proper bathroom during all this time. I'm beyond disgusted by the concept but since it's a fairy tale I guess he probably emerged from his cave smelling like fresh roses or something

Well yeah. It is a fairytale. "The Two Princes with Hair of Gold", the mother was eaten by a giant fish and was stil alive years later. In another story a mother was burried alive for 16 years and when her son dug her up, she was waiting for him with a shirt that she had sown for him. Fairytale logic.

The logic of the Sultan's behavior: Finding out how smart the other king is before attacking the country. Because if he's smarter than you, he must have better strategies in battle as well so you can't defeat his army. A clever and humanistic way to check the situation before you risk thousands of lives.

It reminds me of story about Wiseman. He was so wise that the king wanted to test him. The test was similar to these test in the video. Except for last part. The king put a cup, inside of it there's an animal. The wiseman must guess it or he will be hang off. Of course the wiseman couldn't tell and being punish. But before he been hang off, the wiseman is so afraid that he shout out his son's name "crickettttt!!!!". And the wiseman safe because it is a cricket inside the cup.

Yes, they did. They gave this guy a honey exfoliation, then washed him and applied a hydrating milk. Probably washed him with goat milk soap to booth.

These hungarian folktales started out someone is very poor or someone died. Then the protagonists are always blonde and blue eyes. the evil ones are dark haired. I guess these beauty standards have been established a long time ago not just today.

Even more so with the version I know, where the full dream was "I was marrying the princess, and then eight servant women washed my feet and prepared me for the wedding, and they left the washbasin there, and after the wedding, you, my father, took water from this washbasin and drank my feet-infused water".

@@Passions5555 I did the math and you're right. He became an apprentice when he was 13, he lived in the King's Court for 7 years, and he was imprisoned for 7 more years. 13 + 7 +7 = 27.

I heard a variation but the moral was different. So for some reason king orders old people to be executed because he thinks old people are pain in the ass. A man hides his father because he loves him very much. King askes this questions to the man, and his father solves every of them, so moral of the story was old peoples experiences

Historically speaking, the sultan owned the Hungarian kingdom after winning the war. Hungary was conquered many centuries ago.
