In this episode of Hawaii 100 Highest Peaks, I climb Lanihuli the hard way!
There are different routes up this beautiful mountain called Pu'ulanihuli (swirling heaven). This is the shortest but by far the most intense and dangerous. The 1 mile hike from Pali lookout through the Nu'uanu Saddle to the top of Lanihuli can be very intimidating, it is very technical and can be called very extreme. One mistake on this gnarly, narrow, crumbly ridge, and you can get seriously injured or worst. Please DO NOT this route if you have no experience on this kind of terrain.
Disclaimer:
Please don't use this documentation as a guide for you future hiking activities. This hiking route it's unsafe and very dangerous, mistakes made up here can have consequences such as serious injury or death. Make sure you know your own limitations and be a safe out there!

Nice video of a hike my son and I did 20 years ago. It took me several trips up to lay cable and ropes before I took my son with me to the top. The anvil rock looks very eroded from when I first wrapped an orange extension cord around it for protection. It used to be shaped sort of like a real anvil. The drop was a clean waterfall type vertical trench of red dirt. I climbed down a bit then leapt across the vertical trench to a narrow ledge on the other side. It was fun and I think of that climb often. I think the next day we joined another group trying to climb Mt Olympus windward, but the sheer rock wall was wet and we had to turn back. I was too tired from this climb and should never have tried Olympus windward without more rest anyway. I wish I had taken more pictures on Lanihuli, but we were busy blazing that trail. Apparently many have done the same since and it looks like there is a lot of rope that has been left to assist. I relocated shortly after 9/11 so it was nice to see your video. Thanks for sharing!!

Oh wow, that sounds amazing! You guys back then blazes some amazing trails. So that old orange cable is the one you tied 20 years ago? I could definitely talk story with you about these beautiful mountains and ridges. I actually climbed Windward Olympus with 2 of my friends. It was quite a challenge, but we made it to the top without using any ropes. Mahalo for the comment! Glad to hear from some old school explorers🤙🏻

@@HungaroExplorer Yup, that sounds like my old cable. I remember also finding some thin silver wire earlier explorers had drilled into the side of a couple of the "teeth" lower down the ridge. Earlier reports indicated that they did not make it to the top, but they had fun trying. When we tried Olympus the next day one guy did bring climbing gear and when my son, who was on lead, retreated due to the slippery conditions on the sheer face the climber attempted to do it harnessed in and belayed. The rest of us were clinging to trees on that narrow ridge watching as he made the attempt. Unfortunately, he slipped and fell off the left side of the ridge in a pure free-fall. The belayer caught him before he hit anything but I remember how fast he flew down past us in his vertical drop of around 30 feet or so. When he finally climbed back up to our perch he nervously told us "Don't tell my wife!!" That was hilarious. He is a death defying climber, but he's afraid of his wife. I think he was over 60 at the time so he was not supposed to be doing stuff like that. Good times.

prepping for this one soon, i both love and hate how i can hear your heartbeat as you're crossing the W. It adds so much to the intensity of it lol, it's probably gonna be a one and done for me on that one, I'll bail down kapalama no questions asked
@HungaroExplorer

That part of the saddle is a good one. Just watch your steps and around the anvil rock can be tricky a bit. If you don’t feel comfortable just turn back. Kapalama is easy to get down but long. Just be safe!

Oh, made my comment before you started talking about respecting the mountains, I am so glad someone talks about this aspect of it, I know I'm a bit dorky with it but I've straight up thanked Olomana every time I do third peak for "letting" me come and leave in one piece. The first time I did olomana, my husband captured on video me saying "this bitch goes straight up" and then a few seconds later i pat the ground and say "i didnt mean it Olomana". Idk it's just a weird thing I do, because sure, I may look silly, but what harm is there in it? I talk to the mountains, don't send me to the psych ward!

beautiful video! definitely wasn't expecting you to repeat the hike instead of going down lanihuli trail! I made it almost to the W last time although the wind and rain made me weary, planning to hopefully do it all tomorrow on new years. Thank you so much for this video! Much love.

@@HungaroExplorer Perfect weather today, was able to make it to Lanihuli then return back through Pali puka, little to no wind, clouds rolled in on the W going up but clear while descending. In fact, the weather was so perfect today a paraglider was flying over us during our descent! Incredible hike and mountain, thanks again for sharing your venture! You Sir are my hero. I thought i was cool doing Diamond Head 😏 Who puts the ropes and how many people do these hikes ? The scenery was simply breathtaking 🤙🏽
@HungaroExplorer
@HungaroExplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, that’s a good one. Diamond Head still the most “dangerous” hike in the island...on some way :) Not too many people these kind of hikes, and you better get some of your own ropes/webbings when take on these types of climbs. You can’t fully trust the ropes which already in place there...some old, some weathered.

@HungaroExplorer
@HungaroExplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Well, this climb is not in the same league with Stairway to Heaven. It is a more extreme hike, you need much more technical skills. Haiku Stairs it can be fun, but far less dangerous. You could definitely do it!
