In this new episode of Hawaii 100 Highest Peaks I climb Konahuanui (K1 Peak) again, but this time from the Windward side of Oa'hu, ascending Piliwale ridge. The return part of the loop is descending Nu'uanu saddle to the infamous Chimney and Pali Notches.
Piliwale ridge was pioneered by a 100% Hawaiian blood outdoors men called Silver Piliwale. The ridge got the name after him obviously.
This a strenous 0.7 mile asc ent with 2200 ft of elevation gain. Mostly a cardio workout with very few technical parts. Higher you get on the ridge, the overgrowth gets worst. Mostly to hike through uluhe fern, ie'ie vines and a lot of ginger.
If you want to know more just continue watching the video, it is fun, I promise!

Just another walk in the park for you. Awesome footage and narration. The ginger flowers along the trail added an additional beauty to the hike. 👏👏

Mahalo! The ginger was a good/bad addition to the hike. It has a nice smell, but totally overgrew the upper section of the trail. All in all a great hike!

DRS I usually run the trails weekdays and have a bigger hike on the weekend. Nowadays it’s a bit more complicated the situation, so I am waiting to get back in regular life soon⛰

I went up Piliwale Ridge yesterday for maybe the fourth time. I've always stopped just after the Notch because it is so heavily overgrown from that point. Yesterday though, for the first time, the route was quite clear. I went up another several hundred feet. Too bad I started in the afternoon, because it seemed very doable to summit and K1 was looking clear. Anyone have any idea who cleared the trail? Big mahalo to whoever it was, because that is really hard work clearing that steep ridge.

Piliwale gets quickly overgrown, mostly after the notch where the thick green uluhe grows. Lately there were couple different groups tramping up that section which actually opened up a the trail quite nicely. Nobody really cleared it, but the foot traffic helped!

OMG bro I did this last month! I had NO IDEA what I was in for climbing the chimney at the end of Pali Notches. I eventually reached the summit of Konahuanui but was not prepared to make the trek to Manoa. I ended up turning around and going back where I came from. Climbing down the chimney and the other steep part of that hike was INSANE.

Ohh no way! You climbed back the same way...uhh that can be tiring too. You should of just cross to K2 and hike down Kalawahine to Nature Center or Nuuanu. Way better route,l than up and down.. You made it safely, that is important!

@@HungaroExplorer Yeah, my car was parked outside of the lookout so I was motivated to just go back to where I came from. Wasn't really tiring as much as it was really dangerous going down the steep parts and the chimney. The next time I do that hike I'm going all the way!

Nice video!!! I just climbed up to K1 the same way yesterday by my self... Had I not been going it alone and starting halfway through the day it would have made the trek a little easier... I might give it another go this weekend depending on the cloud cover.

Hungaro Explorer that would be incredible! Unfortunately I’m not in Hawaii in the foreseeable future 😕 Your videos always let me dream of all the hikes I still want to do in Hawaii. Maybe I’m coming back at some point. I will definitely let you know. Maybe I can help you film a hike so that you don’t have to walk everything twice 😂

Even for your amazing videos that was truly amazing!!! Silver would be proud! For some reason I thought you were from Bulgaria, google translate gave me that translation of “crazy amazing” lol Anyway as I contemplate where I can go hiking right now and have the least chance of getting caught. Your video was quenching to my thirst 🤙

Thanks for sharing! I’ll try again. This video was őrült csodálatos!!! I love Chicken Paprikash! Do you know anywhere to get Hungarian Paprika here? I need to cook some Paprikash to cure my lockdown blues and then go “chance ‘em” on the trails 🤫 köszönöm

Haha, that’s a good one! Unfortunatley there are no hungarian restaurants on the island, so you might have to make your own. I only cook gulyas, csirke paprikas is not my specialty 😀
