The last line is sooo true: "Today, you wear the crown of the triumph - but can you keep what you have won?" The Ottoman Empire could not. The Habsburgs could not. The Reich could not. Soviets could not. Our borders may have shrinked through the centuries, but Hungary is still a country, and the people of hungary is more than just an ethnicity. :)))

I am in awe of this leader, both in game and irl. He promoted the careers of talented individuals chosen for their abilities rather than their social status, and that says a lot for a leader of that time. I am Romanian, and our national anthem also mentions him as one of our ancestors.

He reigned from 1458 to 1490. Like most kings, he was buried in Székesfehérvár, but the site was destroyed in the Ottoman Wars. Currently scientists are working on to idenitfy his remains. Last year they found the tomb of his son in Slovenia, so they have DNA now.

Thanks for sharing. Matthias I, often known as Matthias Corvinus (23 February 1443 - 6 April 1490), ruled Hungary and Croatia from 1458 until his demise. One of Europe's first professional standing armies, the Black Army was founded by him. He is also renowned for his encouragement of the arts and literature and for being the first non-Italian ruler to embrace the Renaissance, thanks to the influence of his wife Beatrice of Naples. Hope they find his remains soon for the sake of world history.

Hopefully they discover his remains. Genghis Khan and Cleopatra are two leaders in Civ who’s remains haven’t been found and probably won’t, but maybe Hungarian scientists will have a better time identifying Matthias now that they have his son’s DNA.

Thanks for sharing. I actually think he looks smooth and cool moving around that blade/knife of his especially emphasizing his war declaration even more (tho I think the design of that blade/knife looks cheap; look at the guard also did you see something bind to it? Like a metal string out from his armor or something 🤔)

@@ikigaofficial the story is about a village where there is a new magistrate who is very greedy and gives nonsensical orders to the villagers because he thinks he is smarter to everyone. Basically a conman. He orders the villagers to start building a house from the roof downwards so they won't get wet and can work when rains. He tells the potter to put the handle inside the keg so it won't break off. He orders his servant to ride the horse backwards so the dust won't get into his eyes. Matthias learns about the village so he decides to visit. He arrives to the village and interrogates the magistrate, how is that he is the leader, calls for the old former magistrate and asks them a riddle. The young magistrate gives a smart-ass and arrogant answer, while the old former magistrate answers humbly but wisely. So Matthias reinstates the old man as the perpetual magistrate of the village, and gives him the fortune that the conman exploited from the village, as a gift.

L4sz10 thanks for the elaboration. Nicely done. Yea, I saw a guy with well-fitting clothes acting all arrogant, sipping wine, and being laid-back; that must be the bad magistrate. So that's the reason why that guy was riding his horse backward, I see. I assume the story is based on a true event that happened? After learning that my view of Matthias's personality sorta changed, I know he's a good king, but due to the way the game portrays him, I used to imagine him as some clever but sly plotting sort 😅

Chlorine I don't know much about his father because of my lack of historical knowledge, but Matthias the Raven King is unquestionably a brilliant leader. Just learning about the Black Army's past sends chill to me spine. Unfortunately, the Black Army was disbanded as a result of the Raven King's premature death (at age 47) + due to the collapse of his tax reforms and then the Ottomans eventually destroying his army 😖

Both Matthias and his father John are (any natively Hungarian people can correct me here) possibly the country's most legendary figures. The efforts they went through to turn Hungary's situation in the mid 1400s from dismal to outstanding are incredible. Whilst the country's short-term fortunes didn't' exactly last after Matthias' death, few countries but Hungary can claim to have two of late medieval Europe's greatest leaders, but back-to-back as well. Matthias was also an avid dog lover, which is really the most important and legendary thing about him.

His father bears the nickname "Turk Beater", and the Corvinus family's library is now the library of one of the biggest universities in Hungary, Corvinus University. Yeah, we fucking love these two dudes, its amazing.

Yea. Matthias Corvinus at times served as a vassal of Vlad Tepes, also known as the Impaler. Despite Vlad's outstanding performance against the Ottoman army, a disagreement between the two Christian kings in 1462 led to Matthias imprisoning Vlad in Buda. Matthias, however, was persuaded to progressively offer favoured status to his contentious prisoner as a result of widespread support for Vlad from numerous Western leaders. After being set free, Vlad wed Ilona Szilágy, the cousin of Matthias.

"They say you pay your auxilaries with patriotism. That and two pennies will buy them a beer" - Matthias use Black Army, mercenaries army, much more paid, much more power - In this sentence the beer cost patriotism plus two pennies... but the prize of beer is exactly two pennies. So... patriotism doesn't mean anything (to auxiliaries) in money.

Beer is very cheap. All that patriotism and you still need 2 extra pennies to buy a pint of beer for the soldiers. The quote basically means that patriotism means nothing to a common man living his life, and Matthias thinks that money is better motivation to fight than patriotism. Therefore, he prioritizes mercenaries and levied troops over local soldiers

He is making fun of the player for not paying their standing armies well and for not levying mercenary armies from city-states. He says that the only thing the player pays their troops with is patriotism, but that even that isn’t enough to buy a single beer for a soldier, while pointing out that beers are super cheap (only 2 pennies). It’s a major insult to the player, since he’s basically calling you a stingy and cheap leader who doesn’t pay those who work for them even a pittance. BTW it’s totally believable that the historical Matthias would have used this insult, because he took pride in paying his standing professional army (the Black Army) and his mercenaries very well, since they were the key to his military strength. He had to raise taxes almost cruelly high on the Hungarian populace to pay for his troops (over a third of what he took in in taxes was spent on just the military). However, the majority of the Hungarian population bore it at the time because they understood that his troops were the only reason they weren’t being killed, pillaged, or conquered by the Ottomans, the Habsburgs, or some other foreign threat. It also didn’t hurt that Matthias reformed the judicial system and laws to be much fairer, and that he valued skilled and educated people commoners more than an unskilled or unintelligent noble. Ironically, this is what caused his successors to squander his legacy, as the nobles after his death decided that they would rather regain their power than have a strong king who valued the people over them. Their petty schemes and political interference, along with keeping the high taxes but not spending it on the military but on themselves, caused Hungary to become politically and militarily weak, and the Ottomans were able to conquer it shortly thereafter.

Mátyás király jó választás, ha szereted a vallásos győzelmeket. Az egyedi képességei miatt a vallás egy erős eszköz nála, de más játékstílushoz lehet, hogy nem a legjobb. Ha ez bejön neked, mindenképpen érdemes kipróbálni!

@thehungarian7930 Igen, a vallás trükkös lehet a Civ V-ben. Az időzítésről és arról szól, hogy mikor kell terjeszteni a saját hitedet vagy másokéit ellensúlyozni. Csak így tovább, belejössz majd!
