You know the anime is good when you cry on a antagonist's death

HxH is the only show that makes you tear up because an ant girl and lobster man are accepted back into human society.

I heard somewhere that “Killua is not nice, but is good. Gon is nice, but is not good”, and this aspect of their characters is demonstrated really well in this arc.

And then the little girl ant going home to her mom at the end of the arc. I CRIED watching that

I love how gon wasn’t the one who defeated Meruem. Togashi really knows how to divide development and screen time among the characters of hunter x hunter and it let’s us know that despite how strong gon is he’s still inexperienced compared to the other hunters. He doesn’t have any hidden gift that makes him suddenly on par with the top hunters.

I really love the swap in development Gon and Meruem did in the arc and didn't expect it at all during my first watch..

It was pretty cool how Meruem and Gon switched mentalities towards the end of the arc. In the beginning of Meruems birth, he treated every ant as mere rubble and only saw them as slaves for him where as Gon gave mercy to them (Didn't want to kill them). During the palace invasion when Gon confronts Pitou, he speaks to her very condescendingly and demanding extremely similar to how Meruem did at the start of the arc. If she did not follow Gons commands, he would get angry. If she did not follow Meruems commands, he would also get angry. This ongoing parallel was displayed frequently but subtley such as when Gon even sat down in the same position Meruem sits. Togashi really created a masterpiece hidden subtly throughout the show.

The Chimera Ant Arc was _brutal!_ I had to take a break after the last episode just to reflect on everything that happened

SPOILER Meruem really did have some of the greatest character development I've seen. He went from a monster who murdered a child to becoming sympathetic to the point his death was tragic.

The deconstruction of gon and the construction of killua as the main character is just amazing its so damn earned

This arc killed Pokkle and Ponzu. It was really heartbreaking

I really liked this arc because it shows how gifted people aren't always the strongest. Gon was gifted but he had a lack of experience which makes a big difference unlike how Netero trained for years. I loved how it doesn't always focus on Gon and that not all protagonist have the power to defeat the antagonist.

I love how Gon was the light that shone so bright over Killua, but then Killua was that light that shone over other people, that being Ikalgo, Alluka and the "thing". The pure development on his character its just amazing. Another thing i love and preach about the series. The development on the secondary characters, being ikalgo, knucles, etc. Not only in the CA but during all the series, like in GI with Razor or Binolt. In one episode they make you feel for the dude that its a serial killer, they humanize him, just as they do with people coming from metor city. Even after that you have the founder of the NGL, Gyro. The attention to develop an entire world. One last thing, the fact that A LOT of the "fights" don't get resolved by pure force or power during all the series, its excellent. That being the razor fight, genthru or gon vs Gido in HA. Just magnificent writing all over.

I selfishly still wished that there was a flashback scene of Kite and Pitou fight. I have to know what Kite’s remaining Crazy Slots weapons were.

My face was numb during the scene where Meruem and Komugi die. Never had a moment hit harder in Anime for me.

The Chimera Arc is such an emotional roller coaster. Sometime you’ll be super hyped and happy, then you’ll just be sad and depressed and over again.

Just a reminder the climax of this arc was not who scream louder but a mental fight between Royal Guard, King and insignificat soldier ant Welfin.

I think that Meruem’s name is too often forgotten and is very important to understand his development. At first he doesn’t care about his name because he’s not a human. Then he fights Netero only to know his name. That’s his only motive to fight someone who wants to eradicate his « people ». As Meruem becomes more human, his will to be identified as someone, as an individual with a name rather than just « a king », emerges. That’s absolutely incredible from Togashi

One of my favorite things about Meruem's death is that he was defeated by The Poor Man's Rose that was deemed "inhumane" by the rest of the world. The only way that they could've defeated the monsters would be to become even greater monsters themselves. It really is a great arc about what truly defines Man or Monster Edit: Honestly how does this have over a thousand likes?

I feel you're alittle disingenuous to Pitou. I mean she did start as a psychopathic monster, but she was beginning to learn empathy. I like to think that she fought Gon not because she wanted to, but because she felt she had to; to protect Meruem.

Chimera arc solidified HxH as the best shounen manga. We thought that YorkNew arc is the peak arc, then Chimera arc happened.

I just finished the entire Chimera ant arc and the series. I can easily really say that this arc is the best anime arc of all time! even my Mom and Dad cried when Meruem and komugi died together holding hands.

The final third of the Chimera Ant arc is one of the best lengths of time, not just in anime, but in possibly all of modern arc-based television.

Literally the most overpowered character in the show is Komugi (I’m not serious). Since she's the one person the king couldn't beat. The end of the Chimera Arc rlly had in tears. I was debating the whole arc whether to like the Meruem or to hate him. And at some point, I didn't even want them to kill him. I rlly enjoyed his character, and his development. Especially at the points where he was contemplating his identity and how eager he was to learn his name.

Meruem and Komugi died in such a way that I forgot it was anime and felt sad watching that scene. The most powerful being in the H x H series, searching with the last remnants of his life just to be with her, all the while asking if she is still there just so he can die by her side. And her response is that she is always there and will be joining him soon. Wow! I never expected that from a shonen. This arc was so well crafted that seeing the monster become more human that the humans was amazing.

I always knew that this particular arc was pretty good, but I don't think I understood just how great it was until I thought about it a lot more. The amount of character depth, complexity, growth, and even regression is shown in full blast for literally all the characters. It's amazing how Oda puts in so much effort into building the incredible depth of each character. From the most cruelest and strongest of villains we've seen yet within the manga, to the most good-willed protagonist, and as well as everyone in between, they all go through some form of progression in their character. Whether that be through growth or regression, and it's not a hacked job either. It's done with precision and care, to the point that almost every character is one you can empathize with.

Even a side character like the octopus had a great character development. This proves how great of an arc it is.

Togashi really does seldomly take time to establish the further story. But on the outset he truly understood the layers of emotions, reality and development through time

That's a contentious as hell title, and I 100% agree with it. The Chimera Ant arc was when I said to myself, "this might be my new favorite anime", it's one of the few arcs in anime I'd actually call a "masterpiece"... And honestly, HxH in general ruined me on Shonen, because nothing can ever compare to the high points of HxH for me. The power system, deconstruction of typical Shonen themes, and the moral ambiguity of almost every character in the show is just way too good. Also, I just got here from watching another HxH video that came out recently, so nice timing. P.S. Pitou is the best cat girl in all of anime, because she embodies how malicious cats can be, don't even @ me.

25:00 I disagree with your statements here, I think Pitou was truly sorry for killing kite and sorry for gon after she could not fulfill her promise, Thanks to her feeling herself the fear of losing someone close to you. However, with her being the most loyal of the royal guards and with gon still being an enemy of the king, she still had to kill him. She did it out of necessity alone and nothing more.

Such a great video. Gon and Meruem's story arcs really are S tier. Togashi shows exactly what would happen to someone if they lived their live as the typical shonen boy! Especially in this world of monsters we call humans. Gon's a total psycho!!! Never embracing the darkness of humanity eventually leads to it forcing itself out of you and makes you completely fall apart. Don't waist your money on psych courses just read HxH. lol

Best episodes for me are the two Gon Vs Pitou episodes.. when Gon shouted “Pitou” mid transformation always makes my hair stand.. and then in the next episode when Killua calls out to Gon and him turning around before the final punch is just..... People who don’t watch anime is just missing out so much

I just finished The arc last night. I’m thankful for having “witnessed” this one hell of a story. So much depth, philosophical and emotional. I’m still teary eyed and in awe every time I remember that last scene. It is truly the greatest of all time. Much appreciation to Mr Togashi for coming up with this magnificent anime. Btw, my husband and daughter watched it the 2nd time around and she still bawled her eyes out. My husband too was sniffing and couldn’t contain his tears. We were just like Palm. Lol

When Gon found Pito healing Kamugi and he was screaming at Killua saying why he can't fight her, bruh his voice really hit hard, you can literally see the pain and rage through his voice and expressions. It was heartbreaking..

Also, the Netero vs Meruem fight ending was so good and so not typical shonen. It ended with the dirty bomb, it showed the malice and evil of humanity. It certainly had more meaning than "power of friendship" or "my strongest ultra mega super pooper punch". HxH is amazing because of the amount the depth there is.

Yep, will always be my favourite of all time. The sense of dread I felt when this arc started really surprised me, I was truly fearful of what each episode would bring. The depth Togashi gives to the bad guys is what elevates HxH for me, there's always so much more than meets the eye. They have their own motivations, doubts and fears and they all have the ability to change. Just awesome.

Watching this, I was overcome by sadness. Killua and Gon's relationship is so sad, especially when Gon says "Daijobu". The parallels, deconstruction, political satire, social and economical metaphors and development in this arc alone, set apart HxH as the best anime I have ever watched. I cried. And I've watched this anime twice. I thank Togashi-senpai for such a beautiful story, and can't wait for it to be finished. It's the first anime to make me want to pick up the manga (I've only read one manga in my life and that was bleach) almost immediately. As AoT and Kimetsu no yaiba fight for number 2, HxH remains my number one. Thank you for this..

Meruem has one of the greatest plots of all time. not only did he learn to show and feel sympathy/empathy and he didn't just love a human. he died with that human. Komugi felt like she was nothing and not worth anything. somehow Meruem understood that and he really did show that he loved her. it was an unexpected ending too. I would have never expected the strongest dude we have ever seen in this show to pass away so peacefully. Togashi, you have made the perfect cake

thank you for this video i watched this with my brother, it was his second viewing and he cried for a second time when meruem and komugi died. he cried for an evil, child eating bug man. it really is remarkable how well written this villain's character growth was.

I'm struggling to find something new to say after your great video and these amazing comments. What stands out the most to me is how Togashi makes Gon, who is supposed to be the innocent childlike protaganist absolutely disgusting, and makes the villain go through one of the most amazing character arcs I have ever seen in my life. And all of this while following so few tropes that are so prevalent in anime. Not all of the royal guards get killed heroically by the main crew, and most mindblowing to me, Gon is not only not even a part in the most important fight, but the main villain doesn't even know that the protagonist of the series even exists. Also as is normally the case in anime, the protagonists are overwhelmed with bad odds but almost always keep their cool, but Knov, one of the most experienced Hunters literally loses ot due to fear. Man I can go on without end about how amazing this arc is. Togashi will forever have my admiration for his incredible writing in here. And the most incredible thing is, this isn't even the only god tier arc in Hunter x Hunter. It could be argued that the Yorknew arc is just as good, but in smaller scale and maybe less ambitious. Togashi is an unmitigated genius. Oh wow I rambled on for so much, just cam here to say that I'm all for the admiration of this arc and it's a hill that I'll gladly die on.

Anyone else completely lose it during the final moments between Meruem and Komugi? The way that the story felt to so perfectly tie up and to experience how their characters both grew and didn't really change in the end. To see how their differences in skill, status, species, and knowledge were so impactfully meaningful yet so meaningless in the face of each other's admiration and love. To hear how Meruem's concern for Komugi surpassed the concerns for himself and how they persisted until the last second. To feel Komugi understand his care and love and try to reciprocate with warmth, comfort and compassion. I don't think I've ever had the honor of experiencing a more beautifully delicate, nuanced yet simple complex and strong relationship in any anime. It broke me and I had to stop watching just to allow myself to find a way to stop crying

I love how komugi isnt the usual "weak" girl who fixes the bad guy with her love , she is extremely smart, determined and brave. They both develop feelings because they have a huge amount of respect for each another. Fuck im crying again ....

The chimera arc was a beautiful showcase of great story telling. Every chimera ant was intriguing and unforgettable, and the king and his evolution and journey as he navigates his own purpose and morality are beautifully written. This arc is definetly my favorite in hxh, and it is truly unforgettable. I became so emotionally invested in the characters that I was always on edge waiting for something to happen and hoping for them to be safe. It got to the point where I even got the urge to spoil myself just to see if they died, because I wouldn't have been able to handle it honestly. This is an example of a great story, with unique characters you can relate to, and with a great lesson. It is a masterpiece.

I think it's pretty interesting and ingenious story telling that the room where pitou is healing komugi.... well, nearly every single character who is important to the outcome of this arc ends up in this room at some point, often at the same time as an opposing force, and yet not a single person dies in this room and fights don't break out. It's a really great way of showing how pivotal this essentially actionless scene is to the entire arc.

there's a bit of incorrect evaluation of actions maybe @25:00, Pitou isn't a "monster" because it is healing its own arms in front of Gon, it is doing that because it has mustered up the resolve to kill Gon. Pitou honestly truly respected Gon because he let it heal Komugi when Pitou begged Gon to and also states this very thing, feeling sorry for Gon's loss and empathising with him. But Pitou very well realised that Gon was a very strange phenomenon who could very well turn out to be a lethal threat for Meruem, hence it decided to kill Gon, stating this very fact multiple times while healing Komugi and up until Gon relapsed into darkness. So no I don't believe that Pitou is a "monster" as the one that you made it out to be, infact it surprisingly felt a lot of humane and conflicting emotions towards someone like Gon, a complete adversary.

There are so many immaculately crafted characters introduced in this arc it is truly a work of art. The entire backbone of the emotional punch being that Gon is the most realistically portrayed child protagonist in the Shōnen genre. Children aren't kind, altruistic, grounded or mature. They're egotistical, selfish, irrational and naive. And Gon embodies all of those elements to a tee. Gon is nice and pleasant, but is NOT a good person. Killua on the other hand has suffered through things that have forced him to grow up quickly and abandon that childlike innocence and naivete, and has made him into a cagey and guarded but mature and genuinely good person. The royal guards are masterfully written as well. Each of them develops and nurtures a human trait that ultimately winds up making them imperfect guards. Youpi, who is single minded duty personified, develops a sense of honor and respect for other warriors; sparing enemies he grows to respect even though they may return to threaten the king. Pitou begins to develop empathy, demonstrated by her concern for the King's feelings and feeling sorry for Gon upon seeing him broken. And Pouf is an idealist. He is devoted so wholely and utterly to the ideal of the perfect king he adores that Meruem's individuality and development creates a cognitive dissonance that ultimately drives him mad. This is perfectly demonstrated in their answers when Meruem asks them what his name is. Youpi, demonstrating his simple nature, claims it is not his place to ponder such things. Pitou, demonstrating the very beginnings of a sense of compassion, tells Meruem that he should choose the name that sounds most pleasing to him. Whichever one he likes the most. And Pouf, perhaps most tellingly, replies that his name is simply King. There are others in the world falsely claiming that title, and that alone should be enough to define Meruem's identity. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Nov, Morrel, Knuckle, Shoot, Netero, and Colt are all great as well. I don't think it can really be overstated how good the storytelling is in this arc.

The arc where the monster became human (Meruem) and Human became monster (Gon)

What I understood from this arc is that Killua wished to be Gon's savior but Killua let that desire go because he knew it would never become true, thus making him want an apology out of Gon for giving him false hope, making him feel like he was actually worth something when in Killua thoughts, he was actually no more than a cleaner who is there to clean up the messes that Gon makes. Gon thinks that he has to apologize for the hurtful things he said but in reality he has to apologize for sticking by Killua's side for so long just to push him away as soon as he realized that he doesn't want Killua anymore.

This is definitely my favourite arc the characters and character development in this arc is amazing and the fights are spectacular

Meruem last moments made me cry for hours. This is the best story in HxH and anime 😭

There is so much to this arc it’s insane especially with Gon and Killua. Gon becomes the monster Meruem should have become and another charchter swap was Killua becoming the one in the light while Gon is in darkness...just for a start.

I think the 1st part when the queen is injured could mean the chimera ants were wiped out by another species and the queen was the only survivor. Her trying so hard to make a "prefect" king could've been her way to seek revenge.
