_Kite adviced gon to target the head to kill a chimera ant _Pitou adviced Meruem to not target the head of humans to enjoy their brains _Gon lost every match against knuckle _Meruem lost every match against komugi _Pitou made a deal with gon to let her save komugi so she brings back kite , gon sit his with his iconic position waiting for her to complete the traitement _ netero made a deal with Meruem to fight him so he can tell him his name ( Meruem made the same pose as gon's while talking to netero) _Gon targeted pitou's head without hesitation _Meruem avoided netero's head multiple times even tho he could do it . Gon changed from a human to a monster Meruem changed from a monster to a human . All that and they never met and you only discover that only when you rewatched multiple times If this is not mind-blowing I don't know what it is !!!!!!!!!

I loved the part where Netero thanks his opponent for giving him the fight of a lifetime. It was really quite beautiful.

Hxh is a true masterpiece, the way it delves into the world, people, human nature, intelligence and the multitude of people who use power to achieve goals, it's not just black white and gray spaces, but truly demented ways and imperfect solutions to problems, we are not perfect and we know it, but we have our motivations that can make or break our characters and sometimes we don't understand things about ourselves until we are confronted with life or death situations.

Bruh how can this arc be divisive amongst fans, it’s arguably the best arc in anime history.

it took me so long to finish this arc bc it was so slow at first but im so glad i did. komugi and meruems last moments were so beautiful ive never cried harder watching anything else. my heart was already heavy w everything that gon and killua were going through i couldn’t handle it.

One of the things that I loved about this arc was that the royal guards all had the same goal and devotion but due to thire priorities they ended clashing with each other Pouf priorities success Pitou priorities happiness Youpi priorities safety, which drives him away from the conflict between the other two as his goal is the simplest and is shared between all of them Ironically his lack of opinion made the most staple out of the three

This arc is by far my favourite arc in HXH and definitely one of my favourite arcs in anime. It's so complex with its storytelling and how Togashi writes his characters is so ridiculously amazing. I'm very glad you went into detail with this one DBZimran.

Always found it so interesting when we first get to know of Netero during the game with Gon and Killua, he doesn’t move is right leg or left arm(for 99% of)during the game... and lo and behold he loses the exact extremities to Mereum... good vids man, new sub. 🙏🏻🤲🏻

I really enjoyed how in this arc and the series going forward kind of throws away the idea of a main character. Not keeping everything around a central person but instead throwing a variety of great characters into a well developed world and letting the story form around them. The end of this arc and the election arc do this a little bit but succession war arc really takes this into full effect. I’ve never seen a series just do away with its main duo and I think that’s because no other series can. HxH has such a wide cast of characters with great arcs it’s pretty easy to see any of them as “main characters” from different points of view. Further cementing it as peak shounen and one of my favorite series of all time. Really look forward to your breakdown of the election arc, keep up the good work :)

This was my favorite arc too and the narrator didn’t bother me at all.

I've seen a lot of great arcs such as Marineford from One Piece , RTS from Attack on Titan , Golden Age arc from Berserk but honestly nothing felt as incredible as Chimera Ant arc .

Gon has the best transformation moment of all animes period While in other animes, a transformation is sudden, unexplained is often used as a plot armour without the precautions which surprises the audience that it was even possible, gon's transformation was sudden, but everyone knew that it was possible and were scared about what the condition gon set just so he could destroy pitou. When gon transformed instead of feeling happy about his powerboost, I was scared of what will happen afterwards

Chimera ant arc is probably in the top best arcs

Anybody else notice how they actually started portraying Komugi with more pronounced female features at the end of the arc? Like at first she looks like a literal snot nosed kid then she starts to actually look a little grown up and kind of cute. Idk I just found that odd

I personally liked the narration. In this part it made the story feel like it was being told in retrospect, as though there could never have been any other outcome.

The thing that’s most insane for me, when I viewed specifically both HunterxHunter and Berserk, was that before viewing them, I had already created concepts of characters (main characters and side characters) that reflect not only how neither side is truly heroes nor villains, yet how both sides are villains. This was inspired from my obsession with the story of attack on titan. The difference in my story would be that unlike the world of attack on titan or Naruto where everyone is trying to do the genuinely right thing for the benefit of the world, it would be comprised of characters on either side (supposed hero or villain side) all serving their own personal and selfish ambition, thinking of what they wanted and why they would fight. Then when I read Berserk first, I felt as though I stole/copied both the characters of Griffith and Guts, and the apostles and the God Hand, and even Casca and Corkus to some extent, even though I had never seen this series or these characters before in my life. Before reading Berserk, these ideas of mine felt completely original. Then, I watch the entire chimera arc of HunterxHunter in like a week or less, because I was just so engaged, and I feel as though I’ve stolej the character of Netero, the Character of Meruem, the character of Gon, the character of Pitou, the character of Youpi, the character of Killua, the character of Ging, and probably so much more, even though once again, I had never before witnessed these characters nor this series in my life. I was going to write my story based completely on pure chaos, emotion, and feeling. After viewing these stories, I feel as though I am lacking in originality, as though my ideas are common knowledge or not interesting enough to provide substantial entertainment. I didn’t even care if the masses enjoyed my story. If just the individuals who read my story felt compelled by it in a way they struggled to explain, I would have been more than satisfied. But after viewing these stories, I feel as though all of my ideas are unoriginal, as though I am a thief, and as though my story is not worth telling. This is not a sob story. I am still planning to tell my story one day. This comment has nothing to do with my story. I am trying to let you know how great of an impact these pieces of media have in a way that I can manage to explain and put into words.

Maruems change was so well done, the fact he found humanity starting with something as simple as a bored game and someone worth to battle and talk to while playing…is so basic and simultaneously so human.

Meruem was an awesome character and at the end I not only didn't want him or Komugi to die, I wanted Meruem to change the human world like he planned after he changed.

One thing I'd like to point is that the soundtrack of this arc is an absolute masterpiece, compositions that emphasize tension, fear, sadness, epicness, final peace, anger, uncertainty, etc. definitely one of my favourite things about this arc along with the character devlopment and the reflexions on power and the human condition

I honestly could never even fathom liking the yorknew arc over chimera ant. I think it’s mostly because I like chimera ant so fucking much, it’s honestly impossible for me to imagine myself like yorknew more.

The Chimera Ant is an existentialist arc, and it builds upon every single arc that came before it in some very nuanced ways. No wonder lots of "kids" don't understand it and don't appreciate it. Hunter Exam: The story stars slow, as a chilled adventure with friends (Gon, Killua, Kite and friends in a remote country learning about all sorts of cool new things). Then ants start hunting and capturing hunters, which is like the hunter exam. Gon's ability to bond with wild creatures, and everything Killua learned with Gon so far (including how to make friends with others) comes back into play in CA arc. Also, Netero knew, personally, Gon, Killua, Illumi and Hisoka from the Hunter Exam arc. When Killua tells Netero the ants are worse than Illumi and Hisoka, Netero knows how bad it is. Zoldyck Family: Gon's stubborness, believing he can bond with Mike, the giant wolf that is like a souless empty shell, is brought back with puppet Kite. That definitely hurts Gon a lot, to see Kite as an empty shell that will kill him (when he hugs Kite), much like Mike would have killed Gon if he did not go through the main gate. Heavens Arena: Learning nen through violently pushing it into the body. That's how Rammoto learns it, and the "evil guys" giving him the initiation are Gon and Killua. Hisoka's awful aura preventing Gon and Killua from advancing through the corridor is a hint at how badly Knov and Welfin broke down from contact with Pouf's and Meruem's evil aura, respectively. Knov can't believe Gon and Killua are able to continue fighting after having experienced Pitou's evil aura, which links back to how pedantic he was when he first met Killua. The moment he breaks down he understands how strong those kids are (the kids he did not know had pushed through Hisoka's evil aura without any nen protection). Wing says he awoke a monster (Gon). You were right, Wing-san. York New: Komugi's covenant (her life for Gungi) is like Kurapika's covenant, and so is Gon's when he kills Pitou. Gon and Killua's treasure hunt (artists who leave traces of nen in their craft) is reflected in Komugi's nen (she leaves bubbles of nen in her art, which is Gungi moves, and Meruem sees it. Zephyle, the appraiser, is the first to notice how Gon is unhinged and how he could pend to either side, good or evil. Gon's inability to understand how the Troupe could mourn the death of one of their own (Killua understands). Kurapika's emptiness when he sees the Troupe dead (fakes) is Gon's emptiness after killing Pitou. Greed Island: Gon and Killua's growth under Bisky's tutelage, as astonishing as it was, it was nothing compared to the challenge ahead (ants), so they have to train more. Gon's recklessness in the fight against Genthru, which nearly f*cks up with the entire plan shows how selfish he can be (he betrayed Killua and Bisky there for his own selfish fight, which is foreshadowing for Pitou's death). Pitou was nicer than Genthru, and was truly sorry for not being able to heal Kite, and it wasn't even Pitou's fault, she couldn't do it because Kite's soul was already in another body, alive. Gon throws a tantrum anyway. He must win the game his own way, and Hisoka knows that (remember how Hisoka sends the ball back against Razor to make Gon happy about winning the game?) Algo, Gon takes Killua's sacrifices for granted. He knows Killua is getting hurt, but he accepts it for his chance at winning. Chimera Ant: Everything that happens before the king is born is relevant for the plot afterwards. Some beautiful examples of details that are relevant. Colt and Reina. Colt is pure hearted and honourable because he was a child who died protecting his sister. Nearly all other generals were criminals in their previous life. At the end of the arc, Meruem tells Welfin "I hope you can find Gyro and get to live as a human". That is the ultimate defeat for Pouf (arguably, the least human of the ants). Then all remaining ants choose to live as humans, and we see them leaving with Bisef, including Reina, who goes back to her mother. Morel accepts Colt as a worthy being and promises to protect him as far as he refuses to eat humans. Much like Meruem promises Netero he will protect humans (during their fight) and offers to stop preying on humans forever. But Netero knows how dangerous Meruem's duality is (he is in between human and ant). He refuses the offer and does his duty. Gyro's childhood is an example (surrogate for) how awful Komugi's parents must be. Remember Gyro thinking his father taught him how not to cause trouble for others? That's exactly what Komugi says to Meruem as an explanation as to why she did not shout for help when the eagle was attacking her (in the manga she says that, not sure in the anime). Even Palm being a romantic and going on a date with Gon is important. When Killua sees palm transformed, he knows Gon can't take that blow. He knows Gon will snap. Killua, who had a bad blood with Palm up until that point, cries like a baby in front of her, and that restores her humanity. And her, being the romantic she is, asks Meruem to see his final moments with Komugi. It all makes sense. Respect Togashi-sensei.

I agree with your opinion regarding the narrator. Unlike Totally Not Mark, who thinks he took away from the story by explaining it in depth. For Mark, he felt like he was reading a story being told rather than actually being in the story itself. And while that is sort of true, I still agree with your opinion more.

Hunter x Hunter should've been in Narutos spot in history. It was so much better but unfortunately the health problems of the Mangaka has cursed it to regular hiatus' to this day so on initial airing it just didn't have enough source material to continue. Hunter x Hunter is the 1 series I will wait for as long as it needs because it's THAT much of a masterpiece. Best Shonen ever made and some of THE best world building in storytelling.

I haven't watched the Yu Yu Hakusho anime in forever but I'm reading the manga and remember two scenes that are definitely reminiscent of HxH. One in the Dark Tournament with Hiei vs Makintaro which is basically the original Feitan vs Zazan but with alterations. Another, where the dialogue is very much like what we see in both Pitou vs Gon and Netero vs Meruem, while also similar to the idea of Ging and Gon's abandonment issues - Toguro did push Urameshi at the risk of Yusuke's life, like Ging and Gon - is at the end of the DT arc with Yusuke vs Toguro when he finally awakens his full strength. Some of the dialogue: Yusuke: "I couldn't stop one friend's death. It's my fault... I'll never be able to forgive myself..." Toguro says: "This is the battle I've dreamed of!! It seems that for the first time, I'm facing a fight with no idea of the outcome!! Amazing! What a rush this is!! It's the same for you, I'd say!!" "You stand there as if you're helpless! You're not!! You've gotten stronger! Isn't that what you want? Of course it is! You want to be like me, no matter what it takes!! Now is your moment!!! You must believe that power is everything!!" Yusuke: "I'm not like you. I could never abandon my humanity. I've come this far because of those who've stood by me." Toguro: Don't you see? You can stand on your own now!!" Yusuke: "Somewhere deep inside I admired you. Your power really frightened me but it also drew me in with a desire I didn't understand." Toguro: "To be the best at something, you can care about nothing else!! You'll never be able to do that, so you will FAIL!!" Yusuke: "Did you stop caring or just make yourself forget?" (Left out some lines as it was getting lengthy but the last ones seem to reflect Togashi's inner struggle with the expectations of a mangaka not getting to do much else besides their craft.) And now as I type it's just hit me that all these similarities are between the YYH's DT arc and HxH's CA arc along with other commonly mentioned details like Toguro and Meruem being B class threats in their stories.

Meruem’s death never sat well with me. Yes, he was an outward threat to society but that’s no difference than the insider threat of the world elite. And I damn sure wasn’t about to rejoice his death because he has green skin and a shell on his head. The world elite at no joke.

I feel like a topic that isn't explored enough by essays about this arc, is how the ants act more Human than the humans do. Hisoka, Netero, Gon, they all "play dirty" at some point. Meruem on the other hand gains more and more Humanity. He even sees the Value in his Partners (telling Pitou that he's counting on her to heal Komugi and not relying on threats)

I loved the foreshadowing of gongs decent by that chimera ant that could go invisible. He called him self more human and gong more animalistic or some thing like that.

In the end a good story line. But it sucks, that Gons story is finished. He was introduced as the main character and now - puff, he's out.

It's kinda hard to particularly find a part I disliked in the chimera ant arc, mainly due to the fact that it's fairly well paced and the steaks are constantly being raised while also understanding the difference between monster and human. If I had to I'd say the inclusion and later defeat with the obviously more weaker hunters that we had seen from the first arc being used to basically further the evolution of the ants, but even that nitpick can become a positive point due to the story telling and what we know about the hunter association.

Great summary. One part I disagree with is Netero knowing he couldn’t beat any of the royal guards. He does say Pitou is stronger than him, but that’s at a base level. Seeing how Gon hit her with one jajanken and destroyed her face, I’m sure Netero could beat her with 99th, 100 or Zero hand.

Netero should've done what shinshio did from bleach. Tell the central 46 to either follow and do what he wants or let them personally defend themselves from another full on attack.

To comment on the part where netero was right or wrong on using the rose. To clarify There wasn’t no right or wrong choice that irrelevant, its was the only choice. If Netero didnt use the poor man rose 🌹. The V5 would of and and it would of been far worst Regardless of merrum methods or change in ideology. At least Netero way ultimate save other chimaera ants that want to leave peaceful lives from being hunter like animals. A Now there labeled as mythical creatures. So Netero decision to use the rose wasn’t right or wrong it was the only choice to keep the death toll to a minimum. Minimum being Merum and his royal guard.
