Another great video. You touched on a point that I've been thinking about and no one else has mentioned. That is that each bow setup had a maximum kinetic energy it can generate at full draw. A well tuned bow with an optimally matched arrow configuration we can get the most efficient energy transfered to the arrow. After launch, the rest is purely Newtonian physics. You did a great job pointing out the critical criteria that drive compromise in arrow setups: an acceptable trajectory, forgiveness and price. Well done!

If you are using easton 2 part epoxy, you can still get the insert back. You use a torch to heat a fieldpoint and then the epoxy will release...it takes work, but using a torch on the fieldpoint and then pliers on the fieldpoint and the carbon shaft, you can get the insert out. I've done it.

Concise as always. I think 510g to 550g is a sweet place to be at for arrow weight, I'm running 535g right now. Great thing about Sam having a shorter draw is you tend to get an advantage with FOC. With my Hobbit 26.5 inch draw length I get 21% which is nice.

Great content Garrett. I’ve been using .204 id arrows for 3 seasons now, and last year switched to the victory rip tko’s as you did. Love them. Last year my hunting setup was very similar to yours, but as you pointed out in the video the cost of losing arrows was bothering me. So I tested out using the brass hit’s and gold tip aluminum impact collars. Shot that setup into multiple concrete blocks with no bending, breakage, or other damage. I’m convinced that I won’t notice a performance difference vs the iron will system. I’m also going to experiment with other less expensive broadheads that also have high structural integrity this offseason, mainly the Kayuga single bevels but also possibly the Annihilator XL.

Dude, just so you know... Sometimes (depending on age, type of epoxy used etc) you can remove an insert that's been epoxied in... Yup... By heating it, just like hot melt. Its worth a try if you've used expensive gear and you want it back.

Interesting build. I think the biggest difference I see in the higher end arrows that have a straightness of .001 compared to some arrows that are in the (.007-.004) range is the spine index. I have tested a pile of arrows within all specs and there is a noticeable difference between the two. I'm currently running a 250 spine Easton Hexx (.001) and you would be hard pressed to find the index and any variance between arrows. Love the videos man, enjoy hearing archery from an engineering POV.

I ended up going back and was able to pound out most of the inserts with the drill bit method. I think I might have lost one arrow where the insert took a big chunk of carbon with it. But now I've been able to hot melt inserts in and out, heat up in boiling water to be able to rotate etc.

I like to buy bare shafts a dozen @ a time. I found with the Victory VAP TKO's which r .166 ID. I can usually tune 11 out of 12 to shoot the same. I use 4 bright green 1.75" Bohning X3 vanes on that small shaft. They r a shield cut & a small profile setup that gives me great FOC even though I have a 30" draw. My old 520 grain was 18.5%. When I went all in on the Valkyrie Viking Centerpin system it took me up to 20.50%. Longer draw means a longer arrow with more spine stiffness & even a modest 1% increase is hard to get w/o sacrifice. I'm not losing much trajectory. Trajectory to me from a 🌳 is deciding which branch u need to shoot over & which 1 u need to shoot under. Nothing to do with how much the arrow is going to drop @ a given distance. A quieter setup which is forgiving & efficient should over time provide much less problems. 25 years ago a # of 1200 fps was given for how quick a deer reacts to a foreign sound. Probably why the muzzleloader shoots 1500 fps, lol. Out of all the Victory VAP's I've made they were all .006 tolerance. I took the $$ I saved on that to upgrade to the Valkyrie 210 short Jag with the Viking Centerpin system & the field points with the same system. The threads r not in the back of an insert which I've never liked. Also Valkyrie puts 2 little black bands that fit into slots on the rear of the Centerpin. That along with the AAE Max Impact glue makes an arrow that will most likely outlast me. Thanks for going into the details Garret & I'm looking forward to a spring video when it's not so brutal here in MN.🥶
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
That 1200fps number is from the speed of sound which is ~1125fps. Faster than that and the projectile arrives before the noise does. The other factor is reaction time. If you know the projectile speed and reaction time of the animal, you can calculate the max distance you could shoot before they can start to react. It's typically pretty close. The big question seems to be how much they're going to react once they start, which is so hard to predict, and where a quiet setup seems to start to have its effect.
@josephtreadlightly5686
@josephtreadlightly5686 2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYSportsman I totally agree. Quiet is better & more efficient. The key is to be ready @ full draw just out in front of the animal. My setups r for 20 yards & in from a 🌳. But I time that front leg on a whitetail that swings. Within 20 yards my accuracy on a walking deer is no different than when it's standing still. Not the same thing @ all when I'm trying to hit that 10 ring on a target indoors @ a known distance of 20 yards. Using your mouth to stop is really a 50/50 guess. I prefer the animal to be relaxed. Less movement b4 impact along with a deer that usually will stop to see what happened. Then tip over. Really doesn't have to be so many 8+ hour waiting periods. Preparation is the key & u have many months to prepare.

I get the FOC argument and fixed heads for low poundage setups, but I’ve been shooting mechanicals for 10 years with 70 lb bows, and I’ve never had an issue with penetration or opening. Just excellent blood trails and quick kills, even on shots that weren’t perfect. I’ve tried fixed blades and could never get them to fly true either. My grim reaper whitetail specials fly like field points and I rarely have to adjust my sight before season when I start using my broadheads.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's a fair argument. I mostly haven't had issues with mechanicals either. There is one instance in when I watched an over-the-top style 3 blade deflect on ribs on a medium quartering away and luckily nicked an artery running down to the leg, which caused the deer to bleed out a day later. I also had an older style rage ferrule bend. Found the arrow but not the deer. Those two instances I think a good fixed would have performed better. But mostly for me it's the possibility of wanting to take a shot where shoulder might come into the equation. Like the buck I shot last year. I probably wouldn't have taken that shot with a big mechanical, and probably wasn't getting a better shot opportunity. That said I do have a few sevr 1.5 heads for high wind hunts when I hunt further west. They don't penetrate as well and have a relatively small cutting surface, but the forgiveness is pretty undeniable, and they seem to be pretty tough.
@dualthreatoutdoors
@dualthreatoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
@@DIYSportsman that’s a fair point your buck this year was definitely better suited for a fixed blade. So far all my shots have either been quartering away or broadside and I haven’t had any issues including with some shoulder blade shots. I know the hard bone at the center is a different story. But for shots that end up a bit back I’ll take a mechanical all day. For quartering to shots and shots that hit the hardest part of the shoulder fixed for sure. I just don’t like how Ranch Fairy is 100% against Mechanicals in all circumstances. I agree with how you assessed it in your comment. I run a 460 grain setup that slows my IBO down from 350 to 301 FPS, but it’s worth it for that extra kinetic energy.

something that no one talks about related to string jumping is how much wind there is and factors such as if the shot is in an open area or in the woods and if the woods are thick....also if there are leaves on the trees. I find deer dont hear anything If theres a moderate wind and they hardly ever string jump if they're in thick cover and already feel safe. They jump alot if feeding in the open or if theres no leaves on the trees and snow on the ground.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Ambient noise from windy tree canopies and cover definitely covers up a lot of noise compared to cold, quiet and open, and when they're a little more on edge.

Why not use a 2 blade single bevel for Sam's broadhead? They are proven to penetrate better than 3 blades. The single bevel also rotates and creates a larger wound channel. Just curious.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. For soft tissue, I actually think the valkyrie 3 blade penetrates better than most any other head I've seen regardless of style. We've done push testing into chest cavities like I mentioned in the video but also other testing I've seen with plunge testing shows similar results. I've also seen really poor values with "normal" 3 blade heads. I struggled to even get a muzzy or exodus head to push into the chest cavity for instance. Tip design and especially the mechanical advantage both make the Valkyrie an "atypical" 3 blade head. I presume if Ashby had one to try it would have done well in his testing. Now, would a single bevel do better on heavy bone? Perhaps it may. I don't really have the results to say one way or the other. That said, Sam is pretty particular on waiting for really good shot opportunities (close, broadside or quartering away) where hitting the knuckle is really unlikely. She probably wouldn't take a quartering in shot.

Curious with your engineering background why you didn't go with a heavier head or a broadhead machined out of a piece of steel? It would be stronger due to having thicker blades and the increase in foc would help a little with better penetration on heavy bone contact.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
I've tried the heavier single piece heads before. They work well too. From a structural integrity standpoint some of these multi piece heads do surprisingly well. Thats not true for every multi-piece head, but I've got no concerns with the the Iron Will for example after a couple seasons of testing and use. I asked their owner the same question a couple years ago, and his answer made sense. With a 2 piece head, you can select an optimized material for the blade and an optimized material for the ferrule rather than one material that is just pretty good for both. You can also leverage different manufacturing methods like swiss machining for better run-out tolerances. In regards to weight and FOC, my penetration is already really good, and capable of breaking bone. I'd get more benefit on the FOC side by ditching the lighted nock or going to lighter fletching. So then it just comes down to a balance of overall weight and trajectory that I'm happy with. I shot a couple deer over 650 grains with heavier Bishop and Cutthroat single bevels and in either case the arrow was still stuck pretty far on the other side of the deer like it is with this setup. But the trajectory wasn't as friendly out past 30 yards etc.

@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
If used stock like Sam is now, any nock would come off with the FOB. The only way to keep the nock intact is to modify the FOB to slide over the shaft. But also, the nock needs to have a smaller profile or equal to the arrow or wrap. I'm not 100% sure, but just by looking at a picture of the spot nock, I think the profile might be too large on the nock itself to work like that. Sam's bow is 40lb at 25" draw.

I've not tried the 250 spine Rip xv. I think they are newer. I have tried the 300 spine 3dhv, which I believe are pretty much the equivalent, but marketed for target. And they were quite brittle and would usually break if I skipped an arrow off the target or hit the frame after forgetting to re-dial the sight etc. Maybe the 250 are better. The tko still has about 10% thicker wall.

@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
@@treyhedrick3346 I don't think so. I can't even shoot the difference at 80 yards with field points. If you cut from the wobbly end, that improves straightness on the stock full length .006, ensure each end is squared up with an arrow squaring device or similar, and lastly verify broadhead flight on each arrow to make sure it groups with the rest (and try nock tuning if it doesn't) and you'll be fine. Most of my additional purchases will be .001 but that's mainly justified by the difference in shaft price being a small part of the equation.

For Sam it was the quickest, simplest setup initially and she gained confidence early, so we didn't want to introduce too many new variables with her still being pretty new. For me, it tested to be more forgiving with the bigger broadheads. Most of what I compared against were smaller vane profiles. This year I might compare with other larger profile vanes to see if I want to switch to those or stick with the FOBs again. The setup has worked pretty well so I have no reason to switch other than to keep tinkering and experimenting.

More comfortable inside of 20 I'd say and lower to the ground but still situational dependent. The arrow can handle it but there's a lot of variables shooting a downward quartering to angle if you throw string jumping into the equation. I'd really only consider it if I didn't think I was going to get a better shot and felt really confident in the positioning of the vitals in 3d.

It certainly wouldn't hurt. If I knew I was only going to be taking shots under say 25-30 yards I'd probably go heavier. That would probably put my setup around 250fps, which is a speed I've hunted with a for a long time. For crossover western hunts or the possibility of the occasional whitetail shot over 30 yards I have grown pretty fond of the current trajectory. But there's realistically a range of weight/speed I'd be pretty happy with overall.
