To shoot the first deer would have made your show a shooting show and not a hunting show. After all hunting is about the chase just as life is about the journey. Kudos to you guys for your great ethics.

Great job gentlemen! I have passed on alot of great bucks I could have shot from the road in Colorado but I'm there for the hunt not the kill. THE Hunt makes the story with that makes the memories! That's me in this picture you see, I took this elk 10 miles hike in a 5x5 with a bow alone I will never forget the hunt, the adventure, the pain to get it out.

I'm remined of a time in Western Washington when I drove into my Elk Area Near M. St. Helens. I drove right into a milling herd of elk right at shooting light and my rifle is cased and the bolt is in the passenger seat. No Elk where harmed that morning.

Great videos!.... everyone now a days only hunts from the road and out of trucks. When you guys show your not ready and all your gear in the back and state we don't hunt out of the truck. It is refreshing. Then you hike your butts off and slaughter monster deer and elk in the back country... just plain awesome. This is the best elk/deer hunting series I have ever watched. Plus, the gain of knowledge on how to hunt public land. Everyone thinks you need private land and this proves it differently. Keep up the hard work in video production this motivates everyone.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy this series "Fresh Tracks". It's equally entertaining and informative. The public land aspect is great. Definitely my favorite hunting show. Keep up the great work. I'm off to Colorado for the late season, early November. Maybe see ya there..

Thanks for those kind comments. Good luck in Colorado. We won't be there this season, as we have tags in a different state at that time of year.

I have hunted in southern Colorado all my life. After harvesting and eating many mule deer I and my friends have found that mule deer get much of the flavor in their meat from what they eat. For instance a deer harvested from the oak brush will taste better and have less "wild" flavor than one harvested in the aspen cover. The very worst as to flavor are the ones harvested in sage brush. I will not harvest a deer from sage brush country no matter how large the horns but ones harvested from the juniper/pinon country with no sage are very tasty.

Randy, more equipment questions. I am looking at replacing my Trijicon 3-9x40 scope with a 4-12x40 Leupold VX II. Have you used any VX II models, and if so what do you think? Also, I noticed you, and looks like Mark in this episode, use the CDS dial. How well do you like it, and how accurate does it stay with the load data you're using? I hand load my cartridges, but I know you can send that data to Leupold and they'll customize the dial. Thanks, and thanks for the info on the Colorado OTC Elk tags...may be looking into that in the near future! Been trying in the AZ draw for years with no luck.

+Jeremy Courtney - I have two VX-II. If there is a better value at that price point, with that quality of glass, I don't know what it is. All my scopes now have the CDS system. If I might change loads for that rifle, I get a second dial for that load and swap the dials. For your dial, you will need to chrono your load, give the BC, etc. At normal shooting distances, the CDS is the most simple and reliable dial system out there. Good luck if you go to CO.

I noticed after watching your shows, they are really good, you are western hunter. I remember in some episodes you said you were from Minnesota. I was wondering if have ever considered to go back home and do a hunt there, in Minnesota?

Yes, 3rd season. Not sure of the question. Elk and deer are only together by random event.

Randy Newberg, Hunter I just meant timing of when deer start to migrate to lower elevations while elk are still up higher. Im going on my first trip in nov 3rd season with a mule deer tag. My buddy is doing otc elk, I might also, so trying to figure out a strategy. I am thinking still a lot depends on weather.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
Got it. Deer will already be close to winter ranges by the end of 3rd season, all the way there if much weather hits. Bull elk will most often be much higher unless unusual weather and hunting pressure move them.
@andrewmoore6684
@andrewmoore6684 7 жыл бұрын
Randy Newberg, Hunter thanks for the info. Maybe we'll have to split up then. The co atlas shows the deer winter ranges are pretty low, in the hills above the highways. How much higher are the elk generally? Maybe 10k ft and up? Thanks again.

I don’t get I don’t get why people are unwilling to shoot a deer near the trailhead. If that’s where they are, then that’s where they are. You hunt the deer where they are as long as it’s legal.
