Everyone has been asking for this video for a while now and it's finally here! It's October and that means ruffed grouse season is open here in Maine. Although I am nowhere near done with fishing this season I decided to take for back roads on my way to grand lake stream to look for some dinner (ruffed grouse) on my way. Spotted more than I expected to see but between the hunting pressure and a cold rainy/ windy day they were very skittish. However, I may have managed to get one guess you’ll just have to watch to find out. Stay tuned for the next day where I go fish for landlocked salmon in grand lake stream.
Best,
MainelyOutDoors (Jesse)

Love the Ruff Grouse videos. When they fly or run out of the road or ditch try listening for a "peep" (search youtube for it). For some reason they occasionally make a light peeping sound when they are walking on the ground, that's how I found 2 that I shot at a few weeks ago that were in some really thick cover.
@MainelyOutDoors
@MainelyOutDoors 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, that's a great way to find them in the bush. I usually just poke my head in and listen. You can hear them walking on the leaves too if it's been dry out. A lot of times I find they'll 'cluck' when they are in flocks vs by them selfs. so keep an eye out for others if you hear it

Just found your videos. This will be my 4th year in a row heading to the nmw’s for grouse. I bring my dogs to hunt them though. At first it was a surprise to me to see guys driving around and stepping out of the truck and shooting birds but that’s just how it’s done by the locals. That’s cool with me. I’m bringing my fly rod this year and can hopefully get a chance to use it. Any advice for a rookie fly guy in the north woods. I’ll be north of Baxter state park the 3rd week of October.

Not familiar with your area but I would use Google Maps to find large chucks of Woods and then drive out to them to look and see if they are posted or not. MainelyOutDoors I don’t know how old you are but in the late eighties and before , a common morning of grouse hunting was nothing like you have ever seen , I’ve stood still in a fox grape thicket hollow in the woods and counted over fifty grouse on the roost from one spot many times , we used to flush Covey’s with twenty to thirty birds in them , up on the high slopes of alleghany, Ashe , and wautauga counties in NC mountains,, and these birds did very well until the wildlife put turkeys out and the deer population exploded,, you see back then we could walk all day and not see one deer track in wautauga co but the other two counties had plenty back then but not as many grouse ,, the main enemy of grouse here is the great horned owl. And back in those days all people kept chickens and those same people shot owls

kinda, I use a 20 ga and all of the shells have to be yellow to give a visual reference compared to a 12 ga shell so they don't get mistaken. If you were to load a 20 ga into a 12 it may still fire and damage the barrel or worse. So its a safety thing
