Great footage and editing. Seems like everyone cleaned up on the grouse this year. The heater hunters ran outta birds after week 2 but folks (like you) that were willing to leave the truck had a hell of a good shoot. Maybe it was just me but the birds have held tighter this year than I’ve ever seen- almost had to step on them the last 2 weeks of October. Can’t recall the # of grouse my toller put up that wouldn’t bust until 6-10 feet out. I don’t think I would have flushed them by myself- not without a few scratches anyway. Still not sure why. Any thoughts?

Grouse hunting has always been my favorite type of hunting. I remember when I was young grouse hunting in upstate NY, near Lake Ontario, was a lot like this, and there was one house and barn for every 100 to 200 acres. And even after getting married, and having 3 children, I could work all day and go out with a Remington 1100 that I bought new from Herters for $134. And Honest to God, I'd see 2 dozen birds in 2 hours before twilight, shoot at maybe 1 dozen, hit maybe 2 or 3. Walk home as the sun was setting, and the moon was coming up. Thank you for these videos. They take me back to the early days in the land my father called God's country, before it got all discovered, divided, and invaded by too many people, and the grouse have all but disappeared. Maybe I'll just move up to northern Maine, the new God's country.

I've never hunted Grouse. It looks like you shoot some on the ground.
@MainelyOutDoors2 жыл бұрын
Yes very typical in this area. Our forest is dense so the birds often won't fly they just run even if you attempt to spook them. When they do fly there is no clear line of shot since they normally run to tree line first. Very rare I get a good wing shot opportunity. Its not impossible though typically people use dogs to direct them out of cover
@jamiesawyer51022 жыл бұрын

You have pointing dogs and want to hunt with a guy ground sliding and limb shooting birds? Good luck making him into a sportsman vs a meat hunter. Guys I hunt with would rather the bird escape to find another day than to shoot them on the ground or limb.

Hunting while driving down logging roads is in my opinion the least respectable, lazy, degenerate form of hunting there is. You might as well go out hunting on a bicycle with an air gun - anyone with a brain stem can do that.
@robhendrix80202 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the unsportsman like ground slucing and limb shooting insteas of wings hooting the birds.. So I included it in my comments. I don't have as much problem with spotting birds while driving because it happens sometimes intentionally or accidentally. But shooting them before they fly is where I draw the line between ethical and unethical hunting. When someone does that they are just meat hunting and are not willing to test their wing shooting skills and give the bird a sporting chance. Like shooting fish in a barrel. I wish they would make it against the law to hunt that way.
@robhendrix80202 жыл бұрын
This is the typical local main and Canada hunting method of looking on the ground and in trees without using a bird dog to find the birds.Then ground and limb shooting the bird before they fly. Where I'm from in NC we consider that style of hunting be very unsportsman like. No pointing or flushing dogs are used because the dogs might interfere and be in the way of their ground slucing the birds. I think a real birdhunter wants to test their wing shooting with the bird on the wing. They would never to hunt in your style of hunting. I know I wouldn't. When we find birds we see in trees or on the ground we shoot after they fly to give the bird a sporting chance. It seems too many people commenting on your video don't even recognize the ground and limb slucing you are doing and they mistakenly think your method is how grouse hunting should be done. It actually makes me sick to watch and I can't stand to watch a second one if your videos showing such an unsportsman like way of hunting / shooting birds. All the bird hunters I associate with shoot birds only while they are flying and we consider it very unsportsman-like to ground sluce or limb shoot birds like you enjoy so much. We also don't hunt with anyone who hunts your way. I hope you can mature into a wing shooting bird hunter and stop giving bird hunting a bad reputation by hunting in an unsportsmanlike like way. I recognize it is a common way in the northern states and when we run into people hunting like you, we always try to educate them on a more ethical and sportsman like way of birdhunting. I'm not sure if any of them ever change. It is probably too easy for them to be proud of getting a limit without giving the birds a sporting chance.
@MainelyOutDoors2 жыл бұрын
Id offer the turn of the coin and say shooting a bird on the wing for pure “sport” is unethical often ending in and unclean kill and prolonged suffering. Do you spook your deer before shooting too? That being said I plan to train a dog one day. I’ll offer you a suggestion. Hunt how you enjoy it and allow others to do the same. If it’s something you feel passionate about maybe you should contact your local representatives and stop harassing hunters who are following the law.

Hi Rob. I hear you on this one. I wasn't sure it was even legal, but understand that it is. I'm going on my first grouse hunt to Maine in October. I love these videos and really enjoy the editing, but it is hard seeing the ground and tree shot birds. Everyone starts somewhere, so hopefully he will graduate into wing shooting. Looks like an amazing place.

I went to Maine a couple of times. I didn't see nearly as many birds as he did and did better in the north woods about 2 hours drive in from the entrance. Near ashland. In mid Oct they were feeding on beachnuts.after in a wall tent for a week. Guy I went with had all the stuff in luding wood stove cor heat and gas stove to cook. Camping sites are primitive but have an outhouse. Some people have cabins but probably expensive to rent or pay a guide service. I prefer canada. Birds are not as jumpy and you can find fishing or moose camps that have power. Make reser ations before you go. I didn't my first trip and was lucky to find a cabin they had not closed down yet. Call me if you want more info. 9194147953 Wisconsin you can stay in hotels but
