@@robertswickard8355 I wasn't saying tornados weren't more dangerous. In fact that's why I made the comparison a 100 mile wide ef3 tornado. Ida affected MILLIONS of people. So no not as strong as an ef4/ef5 tornado but much more widespread damage bc of wind and flooding.

For the first time yesterday I watched live video of this storm. I never knew a cat 4 was like this. I thought every wood structure would be flattened the ground. It appears that any large building that had their door open or blown in ended up severely damaged. All other buildings did ok for the most part. Have to admit, the media fooled me on hurricanes. Yes Lafourche Parish probably had it the worst. That is my old high school..I moved out to Mississippi only 2 months ago but my whole family stayed and rode out the storm. Their homes are very damaged..more than half the businesses and homes are structurally damaged. They aren't even allowed to drive because the roads aren't safe yet. People who evacuated are being turned around and are told to stay evacuated for at least a week. Power will be out for weeks, Raceland on down has no running water. Cell service is mostly out..I am only making contact with my Mom. My sisters and their children I haven't heard from since last night and I haven't heard from my Dad at all. Lafourche Parish needs a lot of help right now.💔🙏🏻

It’s more like South Lafourche (Galliano, Cut Off, Larose) minus Golden Meadow, which was in a previous video. But anyway, thank you so much for documenting all this damage. My home was in Cut Off in Lafourche Parish and was a total loss. We only have what we were able to fit in our small car. When we found out everything we left behind was gone we left and moved with family in another state to start our lives over. My heart breaks for my home town. The place I grew up and lived for 34 years. The place where I've raised 3 kids over 15 years. The place where I met and married my husband. It'll never be the same. So many people were know also lost everything. Many are displaced and don't know where to go out what to do. I will miss my home but I look forward to starting over in a new place. Please everyone who can go donate to those who are stuck down there. They need supplies badly. They need help replacing what they've lost. Just do what you can if you can.

I went through one of these, a strong Cat 3 many years ago. It destroyed most of the city. In the live storm video yesterday, I was surprised how little damage I saw. This is more like what I expected. At 150 mph, there’s not much that updated codes can accomplish, but I do see fewer totally destroyed houses here than I saw in 1970. Hurricane ties in the framing seem to truly help; there aren’t so many homes with complete roof structures peeled off, totally open to the sky. Steel buildings are engineered to a wind speed, but this was almost off the charts. Some things are just insurmountable. More are insurmountable when you have to balance costs and risk of this level of destruction. My parents left the Gulf coast after three big hurricanes in nine years. The risk seemed too high. It was nearly 50 years before another landed in the same area. Codes and costs balance the risks. As for Louisiana today, prayers. I know what you’re going through.

Another of this damage could be avoided if the builders just switched from staples to screws.
@PeopleAlreadyDidThis
@PeopleAlreadyDidThis 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know. Most screws are brittle. Much of the destruction of structures comes from gusts, buffeting, and then the reversal of wind direction as the eye passes. I’ve seen it happen...things blown partially apart are then stripped when the wind reversed. As much of the structural failure comes from nail or screw heads pulling through the wood as from the nail shanks pulling out. It’s one thing to advance opinions, but another to actually get through hours of 150 mph wind, and the gusts that exceed that, and embedded tornadoes.
@basspig
@basspig 2 жыл бұрын
@@tlandry9689 I've tested various construction methods over many decades. Staples are the worst, having only about 20% of the holding power of ordinary nails. Ring nails are 50% better at holding than shiny nails, but when I discovered screws, typically the "drywall" screws, which are hardened steel (or use "deck screws" when moisture is involved), the pullout force required is more than I can produce with a large crowbar--more than 10X that of the nails. The nails will shear before the hardened steel screws will, but most forces are pulling apart, and the screw will not pull out from the wood--the wood will shred if sufficient force is applied. That, combined with use of sufficient numbers of screws (I like to place them at no more than 3" intervals on roofing decks) and the use of 2x12 rafters with solid bracing ever 24", with main carrying beams held in place with 6" or larger lag bolts, and metal brackets screwed down to the wall framing to hold the roof frame down. Rather than just putting screws diagonally through the joists and into the wall headers, also add L brackets that are screwed in and down directly. When I looked at homes under construction in North Carolina in 2005 (Pulti Homes), I was shocked to see them stapling OSB to 2x4 wall studs. No wonder these houses fall apart when the winds reach 100mph. A well built structure of the right kind of wood will be more resilient than even a cinder block building, which, once the breaking force is reached, crumbles.
@basspig
@basspig 2 жыл бұрын
@@tlandry9689 you have touched upon the main problem here: profit motive, which leads to cheap, shoddy construction. Metal roofs have the problem of air gaps under them that can lift them in high winds. Cinder blocks are brittle. Believe it or not, the strongest practical structures can be made of wood, with the right methods. Wood has some resilience and can be very strong when fastened in certain ways.
