HVAC: Steam Radiator Air Vent Valve Installation/Replacement(How To Install Radiator Air Vent Valve)
When the steam boiler is not in a heating cycle, the radiator air vent is open, allowing ambient air to fill the radiator. As a heating cycle begins, steam flows up through the supply pipe to the radiator. As the radiator fills with steam, it pushes the air out through the open vent.
No. 4 Gorton (G4S8)
Vapor Equalizing Valve
INSTALL on radiators in room in which thermostat is
located, and on all radiators that effect the thermostat.
1/8” connection
No. 5 Gorton (G5S8)
Vapor Equalizing Valve
INSTALL on radiators near the boiler and in warm rooms.
1/8” connection
No. 6 Gorton (G6S8)
Vapor Equalizing Valve
INSTALL on radiators farther from the boiler and in cold rooms
(for example on second floor radiators).
1/8” connection
VENTING CAPACITY... Equal to 8 ordinary type air valves.
No. C Gorton (GCS8)
Vapor Equalizing Valve
INSTALL on radiators farthest from the boiler and in coldest
rooms (for example on third floor radiators).
1/8” connection
VENTING CAPACITY... Equal to 15 ordinary type air valves.
No. D Gorton (GDS8)
Vapor Equalizing Valve
INSTALL where a large amount of air must be vented (NOT
TO BE USED ON HAND FIRED SYSTEMS UNLESS RADIATOR
SUPPLY VALVES ARE LEFT ON ALL THE TIME).
1/8” connection
VENTING CAPACITY... Equal to 27 ordinary type air valves.
No. 1 Gorton (G18/G14)
AIR ELIMINATOR
INSTALL one or more Air Eliminators at the end of the short
main or the main running to the warm side of the building.
INSTALL two or three No.1 Air Eliminators at the end of the
long main or main running to the cold side of the building,
depending upon the size of the building, use a No. 2 Air
Eliminator. (See Installation Data on back page)

@JumperManTech, how does the radiator regulate the temperature? It does not appear that there are any valves on the steam line. Is there a fan controlled by a thermostat?
@JumpermanTech
@JumpermanTech 3 жыл бұрын
Good eye Justin. There is no way to regulate this heat completely. Its either you have it hot or REALLY HOT🤣🤣🤣 The only control here is a fan controlled by a thermostat but the problem is that not having any actuator valve on the steam line, there is constant steam flowing through that coil. It's intended to work as a fan coil unit but the issue is not having those valves so even if the thermostat satisfys and the fan cuts off, now you have radiant heat. Its constant heat all the time. I want to recommend installing those actuator valves on the steam line along with a drip pan underneath the units with water safety controls👍 We will see what happens. Thanks for watching & I appreciate the feedback. Stay tuned for new videos every week & stay safe out there!

Once the steam is flowing nicely in winter what’s the benefit of keeping a vent more open vs closed

The more air is in the radiator the less steam there is and the less heat output there is. The vent lets out air but not steam.

Hi we don't have steam systems in the UK . That would be a wet pipe system full of 80 degree Celsius water. What kind of pressure and temp does the steam go into the coil ?

Those "Maid O Mist" vents you removed are Junk they don't last they have a plastic float inside that fails. Also it doesn't matter what floor your on to vent air from a steam system. LMFAO

If you are not using an adjustable vent, then it absolutely matters that you replace it with a vent that is rated according to the distance and floor from where the boiler is, e.g., #4, 5, 6, C, D.
