I am a Tool & Die Maker but also spent years as both a Tool & Cutter Grinder and a Gear Cutter. it's fascinating to watch! We used German machines nearly 100 years old. Extremely precise. Final sizes were adjusted with a large wheel about 70 cm in diameter. to change depth by 0.001 inch, you would turn the outside of that wheel around 15cm. That's how close you could get sizes! In Canada, some of the things certainly wouldn't pass the Ministry Of Labor but still, there is a lot of talent there! Gears are a very difficult product to produce! Unimaginable to anyone who doesn't see it being done in person or not having done it themselves. I have, so I know. Smart people working there!! When I made cutters, my maximum allowable deviation was 0.0003 inches. However we had machines good enough that it was possible to get to 0.0001 or even less when truly needed. Better the cutter, better surface finish and tooth profile. Which increases the life of the gears.

I am a old toolmaker from Australia yes they do have skill but the machines are very old so the finish and tolerances would not be very good at all and the working conditions are so very unsafe.

@@kennethsayce8645 When I was building Dies, we'd have Customers walk around the shop, they'd stop to talk to us sometimes. We've built things for them before and they came back for another new job. They seen our machines and the free play. They were amazed at the quality of our dies considering the crap we had to work with. Sometimes on a milling machine, you'd have to work close to the end of travel where the Ways weren't worn out so much. It sure made what should be an easy job, quite difficult... but the boss had a new car every few months (literally) I lost count how many he had. He also had the 3 company trucks go out for detailing every few days. plenty of money for that, nothing for upgraded machines.

In sandals. How many hours of operation can they expect out of all that labor? Pakistan can make nukes now. They have a little stand off everyday with India. I recently had a need for a larger air compressor and got one from a body shop that had no motor. India bought patents from I.R. I ordered new valve plates and connecting rods and piston ring from E-Bay Honed out both sides got a like new Baldor motor and it has been running well. India also years ago bought old Vespa patents. Timken bearings come saying Made in India. Modern tools are coming to every land. It has been World Parts for quite some time. I tune in to see the guys who braze a carbide tip to a scrap jack handle and bore a hole. Once in the blood this metal addiction never goes away.

What an absolute joy that was to watch. I am envious of those machines, taking such deep cuts on such massive pieces of steel and laughing it off. You've got an amazing setup and evidently you've got the skill to use it properly. Thanks for sharing this, it's superb, well done.

The size of some of the old metal working machines is impressive. It is definitely old school using many man-hours of labor and days of machine time. Compare it to modern day giant CNC machines that hog out the metal for helical gears in minutes compared to hours using just one operator. The contrast is stunning.

Most short-run plants are still using hobbers and shapers built from the 1940's to the 1970's. The CNCs today are nice, but most places refuse to buy new when the 50-80yo workhorses are still running and making parts. The conventional hobs are expensive enough, the high-speed tooling is exorbitantly expensive, and usually reserved for high-volume and well-tuned processes.

Dios bendiga a estos excelentes mecánicos e ingenieros, que pese a trabajo carente de proteccion fisica como del ambiente ellos demuestran su gran calidad... espero que su salario y sus derechos sean de la misma calidad como es su trabajo. Saludos

These skills will be dearly missed, nowadays the younger generations are helpless whitout an automated machine. Nothing but respect for these guys.

The good thing is that we can always re-learn those skills if needed. After all, if you know about metallurgy, machining speeds etc from working with automated machinery (those things need to be programmed too! Do it wrong and you'll snap your tool or ruin your finish) you can replicate what the machine does, but manually. Besides that, we've got a great teaching tool: KZfaq.

It's different skills. Similar work to this in the West in now at vastly higher tolerances and requires a different skill set. Notice the lack of IT in the video.

I put the gear on the shaft with the help of a battering ram, but I didn’t try to heat it with an induction wire, or at least propane oxygen with a cutter, so you can break all the bearings with a sledgehammer

I don,t think I ever saw an inductions heater untill the mid 60,s, then when machining the shafts we took a micrometer reading of the clearance of the roller race to allow for the expansion, or it would be to tight or to slack, but its all done on computers now, THEY,LL CATCH UP, THEY MOST LIKELY ALREADY HAVE, FT,

I'm 75, I'm Lithuanian descent, my language is mixed with Spanish, Portuguese, English, Lithuanian, sorry for any error.I live in Brazil, Even today despite my age, i still make huge and small pieces on the lathe and old, precise milling machines.like these,In the past I've made a lot of parts for Caterpillar tractors, ball mills and hammer mills and quarry machinery.... I admire the work of these people from the East, Indians, Pakistanis, etc... The current president of Brazil with retrograde dictatorial communist ideas, says he was a turner, but I don't believe he made similar pieces in the short time he worked as a laborer !!!
