Hydroponic Cantelope in a Cooler

I have had this idea to try a cooler since last year and I am going to try it with a cantelope. The cooler was 15 dollars at Walmart so it was a bit expensive compared to other grow containers like totes or buckets but it does offer several advantages. If I was growing a Tomato or something else I would put a fill hole in the top with a cover. Please check out the links below .

I saw a fellow do a hack of filling the lid with expanding foam for added insulation.

Good idea. I was surprised to find there was not any in the lid.

Thanks, Ken. I don't have any experience with growing cantelope but I figured it's worth a try. I may try to trellis it.

@@CharestStudios They run like crazy. If you trellis, you may have to come up with a way to support the mellon as it grows. They get heavy and will fall off when ripe. Worth a try.

Might be a lot of refilling nutrient, but a nice experiment. Keep us updated!

Yes, maybe I should cut one of the 3 plants out. It will still probably need a lot. I hoping it can go about a week without filling when it's mature but it maybe more than that.

Could you not drill a second smaller hole say 1" to put a funnel in for topping up and also for pushing a stick down to check the water level?, you could alwys block the hole when not using with a wine cork or similar?

Yes, that was my idea and I would have done that if I were growing an upright plant but I thought this might be fine with a vining plant growing off the back I could fill from the front. I will try that on my next one. I want to try one with a Tomato or something upright.
