Hyena Clan Consume A Giraffe | Maasai Mara Safari | Zebra Plains

A large clan of hyena feed on a giraffe in the early morning. Less than 1Km from Zebra Plains Mara Camp was this scene of spotted hyenas feasting, the big male giraffe that was a regular sight in front of the camp was no more, now breakfast for hyenas. It seems that there could have been a dominance battle between two giraffe bulls the previous evening, the broken bushes all around would fit with that theory, no sign of any lions and it is unlikely a spotted hyena clan would target a full grown giraffe bull. Some of this hyena breakfast sighting was livestreamed at the time, now you can see the better quality video that was captured at the time.

Mad love and respect for hyenas. Intelligent, effective hunters, social, super fit and highly resilient. They do what they need to do to survive/thrive and they do it very well. Plus they make sure that NOTHING (nutrition-wise) goes to waste.

There is a clear hierarchy within the pack of who gets to eat first and/or the good parts. Also that jackal that was in the background waiting for its turn get a bite.

I've never heard some of those hyena sounds before. And the bone crunching! They sure make short work of that giraffe. How much meat does an average adult Male giraffe provide predators ? Great video, Rob.

So I looked it up and an adult male giraffe weighs an average of 2600 lbs. I estimated the bones might weigh 800 lbs. Some of those will be eaten. That leaves 1800 lbs of meat, organs, sinews, gristle, whatever. It's amazing how fast it all disappears.

Great Capture Rob...... Never saw these many Hyenas eating togey calmly. It's out of Hyena character. Usually they would shake the earth by Yelling and Screaming while feasting. It's devastating putting a hole in the hard leather that's so old, I already know they eat everything & anything.when hyena fights their mind is focus on eating that animal. They simply don't care. I keep hearing a lion close by if it was a hyena it would be my first time hearing a sound like that😮

I think I figured out which one is the high queen I've watched her go up and down that giraffe taking any piece and spot that she wants with no challenges.
