Lots of owners are left stranded with 2 and 6 year warranties which cannot be honored now that Erwin Hymer Group North America (EHGNA) is bankrupt. While the is some hope that a buyer can be found to rescue the Roadtrek brand the reality is that in no scenario will current warranties be picked up. So where does this leave current and prospective buyers who wish to cash in on the deep discounts they're seeing right now on dealer lots?
In this video I break down the RV's parts, components and appliances into 3 groups: those with their own warranties; those that could be covered under an extended warranty and have readily available off-the-shelf replacements and those that are proprietary and custom built and which would not be easily replaced.
Using this method, current and would-be buyers can make their own decisions as to whether they should purchase an extended warranty or purchase existing inventory based on their individual comfort levels. There are pros and cons to purchasing an EHGNA product today at a steep discount. And, the situation isn't completely dire. As always, caveat emptor and knowledge is your friend.

Damn Neil this is just a hot mess. As a current RV owner this stuff worries me. We all know RV dealers are often shady but being someone who is a life long RV’er crap like this will weigh heavy on our next purchase, no matter what that turns out to be. We were at a RV show last weekend and they had a Hymer and I listened to the sales guy tout the company to some elderly couple. I couldn’t stand it and asked how will you handle the fact Hymer is in bankruptcy, he turned white, the customer turned red, and we all walked away. I bet that sales guy wanted to kill me but screw him. Dealers need to be up front with this stuff. Maybe he would sell an extended warranty but as we’ve learned they rarely stand up the way they sell them. For a long time I’ve thought the RV industry needs oversight. This just makes me think so harder.

The Show Did Go On - and it was great. You may not have been the first out the gate on the story but yours is clearly the most comprehensive for current and future EHG NA and Roadtrek owners. I thought I had every angle and consideration covered / understood, but you outdid yourself on this one. The Mercedes Masterfitter consideration escaped me despite watching your specific video on the topic. Every Class B website should include your video in the 'Before You Get Started' section. Great job on your research Neil! You have truly set yourself apart from the pack of vloggers.. who were sponsored by Hymer and RT and quickly headed for the hills when things went south and have said very little about this issue leaving their audience at a bit of a loss. Not nice. I feel for the RT and Hymer owners who felt some level of comfort with the 5+ yrs of warranty on their rigs and now faced with thought of having to fend for themselves if/when they have to get some service done. I must admit that I came very close to owning a new Aktiv last year but held back. I’m today breathing a huge sigh of relief by ducking this bullet. You sir have done an amazing service to the community for telling it like it is but also going over whatever options they may have now. We thank you. This is epic!

If you buy a Hymer RV, buy it with sufficient discount to price out the warranty. You’ll likely be your own warranty and find an independent repair facility.

Once Hymer goes through bankruptcy its assets could be purchased and some entity could begin manufacturing RVs again under a new brand. Wisenhymer.

Any buyer that has the right amount of money can purchase the brands and rename em. Money talks, bullshit walks. If they are eventually put on a new name, I doubt the designs will remain the same as well.

Your video is the most comprehensive summary that I have seen. I got a 2018 Agile last year and I just contacted my dealer for any recommendations or offerings they may have on 3rd party extended warranties in anticipation of the worst case scenario. First time I've heard of the master upfitter issue so I really appreciate that heads-up. I'm really glad I have the tried and true AGMs instead of Lithium (small consolation).

Well presented and a lot of useful details, Thank you. We are RT Zion owners, and main concern is the waste tanks, but hopefully not a common area for an issue. It appears most other parts can be replaced off the shelf or by changing out for another brand (or sourced from others e.g. lithium batteries)

Absolutely great job on this video. Your points are right on track. There is only one additional thought that I feel compelled to add. When a manufacturer goes out of business many people refer to their products as "orphans", as in the parents are dead. I have had that experience with a Prevost when Featherlite (Vantare) went out of business. The company assets were eventually acquired by another firm and moved to another state. In addition to the loss of warranty, there was also a loss of technical support for the owners of the "orphaned" coaches. Fortunately for many of us, former employees started their own companies to support the "orphaned" coaches and without them many owners would have been up the proverbial creek. Because many items were proprietary in design and application, typical service centers had no idea how to fix unique problems or the "gremlins" that occurred. As you stated, many parts are also proprietary to Roadtrek and getting parts and the crucial technical support could be problematic. I was lucky to have found Donnie Myers, a former Featherlite employee and his team of technicians, many who also had worked at the old Featherlite. Without them maintaining my "orphan" could have been a disaster. With Roadtrek gone, I would be very concerned about not having the technical support available to fix problems that could be unique to Roadtrek and leaving many service centers scratching their heads. So, even with a generic extended warranty, there may be issues when the corporate tech support is not available. Having on going company technical support for an RV can sometimes be invaluable. Keep up the good work.

We own an Axion, and actually I'm glad we got one while we could, because there's no other true RV out there that's 18 ft. or shorter, and that was a requirement for us. We still have our Ram Promaster warranty, warrantees on all the major components (like the Alde furnace/water heater), and active Facebook owners' groups providing a lot of mutual support. Plus an extended warranty (we'll see how that works out). At the prices dealers have been asking for EHGNA RVs on their lots, they're so much less than competing products they're well worth considering.

Noticed a local ad in the Maritimes, Atlantic Canada, advertising a 2019 Roadtrek Zion SRT still with the 6 year warranty, quote: "Every new Roadtrek purchased includes two years of Roadside RV assistance for free! Each motorhome is also backed by Roadtrek's six year, unlimited-mile/km expressed limited fully transferable warranty." I sent them a letter asking them about this and if they meant a 6 year third party warranty as EHNA went into receivership. This was the response from the dealer which I thought was kind of interesting, quote "the company is in process of restructuring and the trustee indicates warranties are suspended until reorganized and in the meantime we have the largest oldest warranty company in canada handling our warranties on current sales."

the receiver is not at this time handing out checks to dealers to cover warranty work. in my estimation the company will be liquidated. dealers have extended warranties available but you'll need to buy one and read the fine print. dealers want to move the inventory they have on their lots and will say almost anything to do that. otherwise they're left holding the bag. just my opinion.

I’ve dealt extensively with several extended warranty companies and I say that Wholesale Warranties are the best and easiest to deal with from both sides of the service counter.

Just tuning into this Roadtrek fiasco. Yikes. The Cambridge plant is not far from my hometown. No wonder the B Van selection at the show was minimal.

@@Ultramobility So this brings up a thought. Without Roadtrek, where do we Class B folks go and STILL maintain a reasonable price. Out of the two versions of the Travato, the K is the only one that works for us, though I love the dinette in the G. There are some really awesome European vans I have seen in YouTUbe videos, that seem to have it all. WHY on earth don't the North American builders use their insights to copy from? I don't get it. If I could buy one of these Euro vans I would. I love PWs quality but the price tag is a bit hefty for us. Even Coachmen Crossfit is beautiful but still beyond our price range. Getting sort of stuck for options. I realize we could still go with a discounted Roadtrek, but without a warranty and that is very problematic I believe, similar to WInnebago's one year warranty I guess. You know these builders very well. I would appreciate your input on this matter. Thank you so much

without roadtrek/hymer and their 17 models there is certainly a lot less choice. some of that will be filled by the remaining companies but it will take time. New entrants may also appear. It will take the industry years to recover from this. I know of several new entrants readying to come into the North American market in 2020. i'll cover them when they are closer to launching.

Yep, working at an auction that's selling off all this stuff now at Erwin Hymer. Rapido Group bought the Roadtrek brand though. I feel bad for all people that were negative impacted by this financial misappropriation.

Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Grins RV in Gilroy CA have been selling 2019 and 2018 new RV's for as low as $47,000( as of 2/28/2019) they had about 4 left. What is interesting is that 3 of the 4 are the Mercedes chassis. There are many other dealerships that will follow in the next few weeks. I would say that anyone who can pick up a new Hymer in the mid $50,000's ( Non-Mercedes) should grab it, go with the remaining component warranties, because they still made one hell of an RV. The other thing to note is that when all of these discounted units are sold (and the believe me, at these prices, they will get sold in a hurry) will the other Class B manufactures start raising their prices due to the new lack in competition. I would think so. So this maybe your best chance to really get a great deal on a new motorhome.

I am beginning to see other KZfaqr videos about this very topic and so far dealerships are stepping up to help owners of Roadtrek products. There is talk of offering warranties that would cover these products. However, the cost and completeness of coverage are all in the works. I recommend calling your dealership and asking what they are going to do in regards to a warranty. This is very disappointing. To see such a solid product go under, not to mention all of the jobs lost, because if shady bookkeeping is upsetting. Great video Neil!

@@Ultramobility As confusing as warranty verbiage is, that would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping a lesson is learned by other brands. Keep your books legal and don't use strictly proprietary systems so repairs will be much easier. I understand the need to stand out but I have seen this happen with other products that wanted to grab attention for their awesome system. Think about your customers manufacturers!!

Based on what I’d seen from two other vloggers who did take the sponsership one downsized from class a gassers and spent the next three months denegrading their former choice and are now searching for a new rvand only now mentioned that they didn’t own the class B

Thank for the additional info on getting an extended warranty. I've narrowed my choices down to the E Trek XL, Coachman Galleria 24Q or the Travato KL. I really wanted the volt start system so my choices were limited. Since my purchase date is not until summer/fall of 2020, hopefully this will all be worked out by then

Some comments say to design and build their own class b. From the myriad of KZfaq videos, it is very hard to find a DYI van that can compare to buying a well cared for used class b such as a RT 190 on a Chevy chassis. Our 2007 4x4 RT 190 Popular looks exactly the same inside and out as a 2018 RT. It is rock solid, has every convenience and just plain kicks butt of any DYI I have seen. Why reinvent the wheel?

SEEMS THE MANUFACTURES ARE NOT LISTENING that's why some who have the ability are building their own. Manufacturers are just buying and inserting stock parts. no thinking involved. example: if I want to boil water I don't need 2 or 3 burners taking up valuable space. That's why God made micro waves. zap; almost instant boiling water. Want to stir fry or fry an egg: there are storable induction cooktops just need the right power outlets. Do it. having said that stop putting micro waves at floor level. when is the last time you saw that in your home kitchen. there's a reason; it's dangerous and damn inconvenient . Micro/ Convection combo should be standard. don't have to be huge but quit installing coffee cup only sized micro waves just so you can say there is a micro wave. more standard twin bed configurations. I like the friends I invite along but I don't want to sleep in the same bed with them. If people need frolicking space make the twins convertible to queen or king. too few manufacturers are doing that. Under belly items should be protected and not so low you cant drive off the blacktop. shouldn't have to stand on my head to service items under the carriage. sorry about the rant, but you are one of the few who listens.

That whole situation sucks not only for rv owners but their employees as well. Just when it seemed that the Roadtrek etrek sprinters were going to run the rv game it takes a dump. But we as techs are trying our best to keep them on the road.

I find it amazing that Hymer could go under in such a hot market. Financial irregularities indeed!! And a healthy dose of stupid. Thank you for a very comprehensive overview of this event, and your breakdown of warranty issues. That was logical and hopefully appreciated by the owners left holding the bag.

No dog in this fight, as a Class B van is still a wish list item. That said, it's worthwhile to note that any company that offers an extended warranty is either taking a calculated risk or making an educated guess that they will be able to make a profit on the deal. From a consumer perspective, you're gambling that you will get more value out of the extended warranty than you pay for it. Personally, I would probably self-insure rather than doing the extended warranty, and rely on the warranties for the various components. I hope that some companies will offer a similar layout to the Activ.

I hear one Florida dealer bought some inventory of parts but I don’t know how that would allowed bc all assets would be frozen pending next steps. I guess we’re going to see a lot of Jerry rigging in second hand units in the future when owners are fed up and decide to sell.

that would be interesting is assets are being sold off. it means they are in the process of liquidation and did not find any buyers. I would think that a court doc stating this would be on the receivership site and I didn't see one.

I don't think anyone is buying anything from EHGNA. What people are doing is identifying the companies that supplied EHGNA and then buying from those suppliers.

Michael Hanson Hi Michael. I got the impression this Florida RV dealer was also buying proprietary items from Roadtrek for ex components of the Ecotrek system. Maybe they bought them bf the court intervened in insolvency which would mean they knew more than anyone else about upcoming shutdown.

Just so that you are aware, KS2 is still manufacturing the battery, and providing warranty for 3 years from date of manufacture of the battery. The y are out of Montreal Canada.

Well now we know why Roadtrek had those great warranty’s, while Winnebago had those stingy/ gr ones. Think the Travato is not perfect, but they come from a company that will be around. Just met some one at rest stop in NY driving a 1995 Rialta

This is why I'm so nervous of getting class b van now, makes me wonder if I should go the truck camper route because they seem cheaper to fix/maintain. I feel so bad for the owners out there, what a sad situation.

Great information! My condolences to all the Roadtrek owners. Definitely heartbreaking. Do you think the 6 year Warranty had anything to do with Roadtreks demise?

no I do not. if you look at the court docs the company just had too much liability across the board. it wasn't well managed. it may have been exacerbated by funds being siphoned off by top management but I would not be able to verify that. we'll know more as lawsuits are filed etc.

Thanks Neil, very well done summary. Agree that liquidation is most likely scenario and maybe, someone will acquire Roadtrek brand if they can disassociate themselves from the mess and move manufacturing to one of the US biggest RV hotspots. Regarding Ecotrek, there is information that from some point in the past it was manufactured by KS2 (ks2corp.com/) who was subcontracted by Hymer to produce batteries as well as some other electronics in the system (like Inverter). Members of the community were in contact with KS2 and they stated that batteries would be covered for 3 years as long as the customers would work with dealers to handle the warranty. The warranty replacement has not been tested yet, so until then it's just FYI.
