Wonder how hyper realistic animal paintings are created? Watch me paint a tiger and explain how I did it through time lapse painting!
This is day 1 of my 31 day challenge to paint a new animal species and release a KZfaq video documenting the process to get better at video editing! If you thought I would take it easy on painting with needing to produce a video each day, think again because I absolutely plan to bring you some of my most breathtaking artwork throughout this challenge.
✨This painting is for the Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage & Culture Association and their annual art exhibit celebrating the Lunar New Year ✨ It will be on display at the Grey Gallery in Owen Sound, Ontario Canada from JAN 19 to FEB 19, 2022 ✨

The goal of the 31-day challenge for me is to combat the perfectionist that lives in your soul, questioning everything you are trying to do and slowing you down. While taking your time and thinking things through does provide a lot of value in some situations (like whiskers when you don't want to mess up everything under them!), not thinking as much when I paint cuts out a tremendous amount of time. The benefit of making quick decisions because it's getting close to midnight and I have to do this all again the next day is invaluable to realine my expectations of how long paintings take.
This Tiger was completed in 18.5 hours - A tiger painting like this would typically take me 2-3 weeks, painting 4-5 hours each day (fur is hard work on the hand!)-many layers of fur and repainting areas that aren't quite right to my eye. BUT as I write this on January 2, with another painting still to finish today, the beauty of this challenge is just walking away from (subjectively) '80% done' paintings. Do I like my daily paintings when I give up on them to get to bed? Not at all, but they always look great in the morning, and I don't even think I could tell the difference between 80% and 100% from a few feet away anyway.
References were purchased from Hollie Gordon through Wildlife Reference Photos, a great website, & I combined two of her photographs to create this painting.
