Not sure if this correct but I find twisting my pinky a little higher than my pointer finger stops me from hyper extending. The higher your thumb the easier it is to hurt your elbow

I have been dealing with that pain constantly it happens more often now, I notice it happens when i miss a punch or when it doesnt land properly.

This was one of the first things I learned in my Martial Arts training. OTOH I have seen people leave "cardio boxing" classes clutching their elbows and shoulders. Thanks guys!

If the shoulderblade extends all the way out, it is almost impossible to hyperextend your elbow

It’s less about the elbow bend and more about shoulder rotation.

Another way is to twist your arm, so in extended position your elbow is looking more upwards, and your hand position is almost thumbs down. Fells like it is impossible to overextend in such position

Thanks coaches. Got this pain on the heavy bag the other day with a low body shot from the backhand. In wing tsun we always overextended tho. I do notice your shoulder is over extended....question should the shoulder also be fully extended for hooks, so many people get shoulder injuries' in boxing due to hooks!

My coach used to say stuff like this, especially when I shadowboxed. I never had any problems tho and always got full extension. I think the difference is the amount of rotation I used

Also training to improve your arm tendons will make it much harder to get that pain and also makes u comfortable on that position.

i used to experience this except with the jab .my coach used to say 'always make your punches straight' ..and i used to go overboard with that and throw jabs as fast and as hard and as extended as possible l..well this one day, i started experiencing cracks whenever i threw jabs ....learned the lesson the hard way

If the punch is turned over properly its very hard to hurt the elbow, as the elbow is facing slightly upward

I’ve felt my elbow go “wobbly” from over-extending. I’ve yet to attend a real gym due time, money, and I’m too old for chasing fame. I just want to learn. And when I see videos that say “punch to full extension of the arm,” I mistakenly assumed I should go until my elbows “lockl

Does this also happen when fist isn’t clenched ? Since you can throw a lot faster with an open hand and twist your forearm faster. I usually get hyper extended when my fist aren’t clenched and I try and throw wildly fast

Or you could regularly stretch and train your tendons to get back full range of motion and the flexibility to do that cus that's just normal extension. hyper extensions would be past what you can make your arm go aka your arm going backwards (if held out on your side in this example) and yes doing that is possible I do it myself I can extend my arm completely straight with no pain at all and I've done similar stretching on my legs Hyper extensions could possibly happen if you land a punch wrong and your arm bends the opposite way its supposed to but I am not a boxer so I don't know the full extent of how it can go wrong I'm just someone who knows and trains flexibility of my arms and legs

If you tie this vid in with our “pinky in the nose” vid about turning over your punch, you’ll find your punches will feel much more compact and so fingers crossed… no pain 🙌🏻

I like this tip for when you are training, but in sparring or fights, you most definitely extend the Jab.

No you don’t , it comes with stepping in and using your shoulders, not extending your elbow applies to any punching circumstance
