This video is defensive

This probably would have been funnier if it was posted a bit earlier, but coming back to it in 2023 feels… strange. Like the cultural perception of hyperpop used to be that it was deconstructed club/ experimental influenced pop, and just boundary pushing pop/hip-hop/ dance in general. But now, hyperpop refers almost exclusively to this like unimaginative emo trap brostep sound, and it was really hard for me to watch, and I think part of it was the fact that some artists were so hesitant to claim the hyperpop label, and the ones that did claim it and wear it proudly were people like bladee. I mean with some artists, their hesitancy made sense- like SOPHIE didn’t know she was going to create a genre until she did, and people assigned that label to her. It made sense that she would be hesitant. But the trend during 2020 and 2021, once the genre started to solidify more, people not claiming the label always seemed really stupid to me, because hyperpop around that time was supposed to exist as almost a post genre- something that’s only defining characteristic is it’s experimentation, and that forgoes all traditional notions of how a genre is supposed to “sound”. Instead, and in part because of this refusal to accept this label, the genre became watered down with generic music. A large part I think of what caused this was Spotify’s awful playlists, and Tik Tok’s basic adversion to do research (Seriously, how it was able to create a whole glitchcore playlist that didn’t include any glitchcore and then trick a whole generation to think that’s what the genre is is still the most impressive piece of marketing the music industry has ever done) And now I don’t even think of it as a genre at all, it was a culture movement centered concurrently around deconstructed club and the P.C. Music scene in the late 2010s critiquing capitalism and embracing queerness that ultimately fell from the same capitalist forces that it used to rail against.
