Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) reviews hypersensitivities, spending a few minutes on each of the four different types of hypersensitivity, including those that are cell-mediated (delayed) and antibody-mediated.
This channel also has a video on TYPE 5 HYPERSENSITIVITY if you want to check it out here: • Type 5 Hypersensitivity

This was very helpful for numerous reasons. My professor never really slowed down to re-iterate the simple things such as "IgG and IgM recognizing antigens on cell surfaces." This really helped to simplify the 4 steps of hypersensitivity and my poor understanding of immunology in general.

As someone with food allergies and rh reaction as well as diagnosed antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and a type IV expression of erythema nodosum, I wanted to say thank you for helping me to understand what is breaking down. I now understand why my hematologist suggested I undergo experimental immuno suppressive therapy. It gives me more information to make the appropriate decision to move forward or not. So Thank You ❤

Hi, do you happen to know if prostaglandins can be released in a type IV hypersensitivity reaction? If so, what might the pathway leading up to that response be?
@BiologyProfessor

I am not aware of prostaglandins playing any role outside of a Type I hypersensitivity reaction.

Great video, very helpful. I have a couple of questions. 1) what causes the "delay" in Type 4 reactions? 2) why do some allergens elicit a Type 1 reaction while others elicit Type 4 reactions?
@BiologyProfessor
@BiologyProfessor 5 жыл бұрын
1) In Type 4 reactions, the delay is caused by the time it takes the immune response to occur. Antigen first has to be taken up, then processed, and then presented by antigen presenting cells. The T helper cells that recognize the antigen are not very numerous in the body and they take some time to arrive. Together, this adds to a bit of delay in immune response. 2) I believe the correct answer is that different kinds of receptors are triggered by different kinds of antigens, resulting in different types of responses.
