My grandfather was a Legend Of Zelda fan since the original on the NES back in 1986, he used to love watching you and Zeltik discuss the theories of the newer games and the subtle references/ tie ins to the games he played while raising a family. We played Ocarina of time, Majora’s, TP, SS as they released. And a little bit of Breath of the Wild last year before he realized it was all getting a little bit too complex for him to do much besides watch. When TOTK’s unnamed launch trailer came out we were so pumped for another open world adventure filled with what looked like traditional Zelda dungeons. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly last October before the development was completed. But I’ve been playing religiously in my own sort of celebration of his life and the absolute GIFT he gave to me by introducing me to the Legend of Zelda at such a young age. I wanted to explain so I could THANK you for all of this work you put into bringing this series into the spotlight for at least a handful of us dedicated fellows. I know you made his evenings when he’d load up his KZfaq and see you uploaded that day. From one Hylian to another. Thank you.

The thing I'm loving the most about this game is how lively it feels, more than ever I feel like the whole Kingdom of hyrule with all the people feels way more active and generally more strong willed, it's like every character has something to do, something they want to and aren't stuck in one place

I love how Teba brought up Tulin. Teba knew Revali's mistakes, such as thinking he can take the world on alone, and Tulin was exactly like that. Maybe he picked up a few habits from Revali after going back in time in AoC. Tulin's ability is also evident of Teba's efforts to not make his son like Revali. Tulin's ability carries Link horizontally, whereas Revali's gale shoots Link vertically.

I've shared this elsewhere but wanted to do my thoughts here as well regarding the "reused map". In fact, I think the better way to think of this is "reused geography" - and the distinction is so important... Imagine your buddy says to you "I grew up in San Francisco and I love that city so much. I haven't been back in 20 years because I'm not sure I'll find anything fun to do." Or: "I spent week in London 5 years ago and it is probably my favorite city. But I don't need to go back - I probably did everything fun already and I'm not sure it's changed enough since last time I was there." Replace "London" and "San Francisco" with your favorite city or national park: New York, Paris, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon... Those statements above would be patently ridiculous because our love of a place only *grows* when we have great past memories there. In fact, the person returning to one of these locations knows better how to enjoy that place than someone who's never been, and the small changes will trigger nostalgic dopamine and a sense of wonder for those things that have changed and evolved. Like seeing a movie that's set in a city you've loved, or taking a best friend to the haunts of your childhood, we should*expect* these experiences to be magical. Totk may have accidentally uncovered a new way to make amazing video games. Not by reusing the "map" but by bringing us back to a geography we loved - and by really investing in the evolution of that place as if it were a real and dynamic locale within the in-game universe.

In my opinion, Tears of the Kingdom only has 1 tiny problem: It makes Breath of the Wild feel like it was just a "Proof Of Concept", rather than a complete game. Don't misunderstand, I do like Breath of the Wild, but Tears of the Kingdom just took everything that was already there, and vastly improved upon it. There are more ways to get around, more things to do, more fun side-quests, the build-up to each Temple is arguably the best I've seen in a Zelda game yet, the Temples are a lot more varied, while still having the same core objective (activating a couple of terminals, then winning a boss-fight and claiming a heart container), the Shrines are a lot better in every way and there's a lot more enemy-variety and stuff to use monster parts for. At first, I was a little apprehensive, because it felt like a lot of the same all over again, but that feeling quickly vanished, after I started exploring this new version of Hyrule.

fun fact: there is a loading screen, but developers have learned to hide it. in another game it might be a spot where you squeeze through a tight spot, but here it's the sheer time spent falling. that amount of time allows them to load the Depths without feeling like a traditional loading screen. it was a great innovation that these developers built upon.

Everyone talks about the graphics, mechanics, and story, but I really think we need to talk about the game design more. When I started TotK, I was NOT interested in exploring the upside down or doing millions of crazy side quests when the story required my attention. It was with delight that the story pushed me beyond my comfort zone. A certain temple forces me into the depths, and curiosity made me go on side quests. The game design subtly introduced me into all these positions and with a snap a whole week passed me by just playing TotK. It was very overwhelming at first but the designers introduced everything (and things yet unknown to come) in such a way that I feel very comfortable! A masterpiece of design as well.

This game is massive, some confusing aspects in regards to important events/characters not knowing Link somehow, malice hasn't been mentioned once (at least in my current goofing around) and there are still some small flaws. Overall, this game is a true gem or the series, feels almost right up there with Ocarina and TP, imo. Speaking of TP, it's not a spoiler, but there's a special bow you can find in Hyrule Castle, in one of the destroyed cones of a tower. It raises some questions for sure when you see its description. Adding onto this, Kolton 'could' possibly be our Tingle reference, as he wants to become a Satori.

Its unreal how stable the game is. Its truly an invisible effect, but the extra year the developers spent on it to make sure nothing would randomly break or cause issues is so appreciated. Not only is the amount of side content massive, but the way they're implemented makes the world feel SO much more alive. Like every character has their own story they're living out that unfolds concurrently with yours. This is the first time a Zelda game - my favorite series since 1987 - has made me feel that way. It always took me out of it, how NPCs were so static, just signposts that always say the same thing. But they've *finally* put together that piece of the puzzle. TotK is the epitome of the kind of world I just want to *exist* in. Wake up early in Hateno, walk through a trail in the woods for some hunting and fishing, setting up a picnic for lunch, check in with your neighbors to see the latest scoop on the election, catch some of a lecture at the schoolhouse, go spelunking in a cave you just found that leads to riding a gigantic dragon through the depths, and ending the night by hitting up a concert at a stable and earning some Pony Points. I've played for 80 hours and I've barely scratched the surface. For a lifelong gamer, it truly is an unreal feeling.

I absolutely adore this game so far - especially the richly fleshed-out overworld - but, for me, dungeons still manage to fall a little short of what I would have liked to see: I've completed three and, of these, only one has really fully lived up to my expectations in terms of scale, atmosphere, sense of exploration, and challenge. Of the other two, one was entirely too short and small (almost feeling like just a larger shrine puzzle with a boss at the end), though the lead-up and overall traversal were great, while the other sat somewhere in between. Don't get me wrong, they're still a MASSIVE improvement over the divine beasts and I'm having an absolute blast with the game as a whole but they still don't quite scratch the same itch for me that a good classic Zelda puzzle box dungeon would have.

I have no idea how I survived that encounter and won. If you're wondering why I'm calling them Floormasters and havn't killed one for yourself don't look into the read more . . . . The way they look and act feel like a call back more to the Floormasters of Wind Waker than Dead Hand, from the way they look with the dark redish purple base color with red edge glow to the way it can snatch and throw nearby objects and even deflect things thrown at them, and in WW their possible ties to the Phantom Ganons, from the way they look to when and where they start appearing, after you release Ganondorf's power, fighting your first Phantom in the Forsaken Fortress with 2 Floormasters showing up in nearby rooms aswell as them starting to show up in dungeons afterward.

As someone who spends almost every spare moment I have playing this game, I have a fun little term for all those distractions. "Squirreling" is something that happens when you have a present destination in mind, but you end up enamored by everything along the way. So far, I've stumbled into a dungeon, went along with a main quest I had no interest in doing yet (great choice on my part) and spent many more hours enjoying a game more naturally than any DLC could do for me!

But I still love to see them back and the new twists on them.

I totally agree with the distractions... I decided to unlock all of the towers first to make getting around Hyrule easier, but every time I unlock a tower, then I see a shrine... then I see some sky islands to explore, then I see something or someone that triggers a side quest, etc... and it just keeps going. I would note that doing the towers first also gives you the ability to do the glyphs early and see the story background before you start diving into the dungeons or main story quests... which I have enjoyed so far. I still haven't done a dungeon because I wanted to do some other stuff first, but getting closer to tackling the wind temple.

My boyfriend thinks it’s kind of funny how emotional I’ve gotten over certain aspects of totk. He’s only ever played Zelda games a few times with me on the 64 or the switch. Ya know for me some of my first and best memories are having snacks and pop with my dad while watching him play and teach me how to play ocarina of time. As I grew up all my uncles and my dad always got me the new Zelda games and systems to match. I had so much fun playing and feeling the adrenaline rush when my dad would deny me help with the monsters and dungeons and guide me through how to fight them without his help. The Lon Lon ranch song, eponas song, and the opening title music of Zelda games just makes my eyes well up. Remembering the best of my childhood and the fantasy of being a timeless hero from a little woodland town. It’s raw and inspiring and nostalgic. I don’t blame anyone for crying over a Zelda game, it’s a truly moving storyline and the music is genuinely breathtaking.

I feel like this game caters to those with ADHD quite a lot, & even those that don't have it will feel like they do, while playing this game. There's soooooo much to do that you can't help but get distracted, even if you're the most focused person you've ever known. Even when I've marked a spot I plan on heading to, especially in the Depths, I'll either find several monster camps along the way, several groups of poe souls to pick up, Zonaite to mine, a boss battle to mark, & either kill it or avoid it, & several other things to do, which sometimes causes me to go in another direction than I was originally heading in. This last marker I set on the map, which was a Lightroot to unlock, it ended up taking me an hour yo get there, cuz I found too many things to do along the way, such as I explained above. I even found a new version of a Frox that I hadn't encountered before, so I took a pic for the compendium, & then fought it. One thing I'm enjoying on a minor note, is the side quest in Terry Town involving Kilton. Whatever pose a monster takes when you take the pic of it is exactly how the model will be made, & how it will stand on his Display. Also, it doesnt matter where or how you set up his stage--everything stays exactly how you put it (minus any non-monster things you put into it)

I've been delighted to find characters I recognized from BOTW in new places, and to see how Hyrule has begun to evolve and grow. I was TERRIFIED of the depths at first but now I love them, they're weirdly chill in a way. I think I've got more lightroots found than shrines at this point. Even though I'm through half the main story beats I think, I still feel like I'm not that far in the game - there's so much more to do! I've only just met the Gibdos but I do not like them at all.
