Can Hyundai continue its excellent recent form (making good sensible cars and fun hot hatchbacks) into the world of EVs?
That’s the question for the Hyundai Ioniq, the edgy electric family crossover that’s the first of Hyundai’s new family of Ioniq-badged EVs. Instead of using raw speed to sell it, this is an electric car groaning under the weight of thoughtful design touches, clever details - and one or two gimmicks - to lure you away from rivals like Ford, VW, and (you guessed it) Tesla.
Is the Ioniq another smash hit for Hyundai? Top Gear Magazine's Serious Car Tester, Ollie Kew is here with the Tested treatment to find out.

That's what people don't realise about range. Ev's aren't meant for road trips yet, but how often does the average person drive more 200 miles in a day? And if you do drive 500 miles regularly, get a hybrid

@@dzelloI agree mostly but hyundai had proven its self to be able to make both reliable, high quality, luxurious, cars all at a lower price than their competitors, I agree it's not ground breaking but they certainly have put the customers much higher up their list than alot of other manufacturers, for example pretty much all hyundai kia genesis models come with or can be optioned with a blind spot cam In the Guage cluster and that should be on every car but it's not, mainly hyundai kia no one else

@@tenderjerky3504 Yes, that's what they do. They take what others innovate and sell it for a way lower price and with a reliable product. Love that Hyundai is pushing the boundaries of normal car design these days. Seen a few on the roads and can’t help but look, especially at night. It’s nice to see something different for once, and I hope they can pull it off again with the next model. This design style on an actual small hatchback would be perfect, or even give us an N version with the 577hp motor out of the EV6 GT.

It's the opposite actually: if it was smaller, it would probably lose points more than win any. People prefer big cars and you'd lose space inside (room, storage, etc.) by making it smaller.
@rustybaws
@rustybaws 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lewis_Standing it is massive, when compared to what it looks like in pictures anyway. You'd expect it to be a similar size to a hatchback like a Golf or similar. It's wheelbase is longer than a standard range rover I am sure. It's size feels similar to a Volvo XC60 or something along those lines. It's more of a SUV than a hatch anyway. It is a wide car as well and because of the wheelbase the space inside is quite vast, the legroom in the rear is very generous.

Mine already has had an ICC replacement and multiple electronic failures. It's been back to the dealer multiple times and has caused nothing but frustration and inconvenience. Tbh, I was surprised given all the awards and postive reviews. However, just take a look at the online forums and you'll see the litany of faults and problems with the Ioniq 5. In over 30 years of motoring I've never had such a poor experience with any vehicle. And I'm one of many, many people. Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

So, it's November 2023 now. Not quite 2025 but we recently bought the upgraded Ioniq 5. There's not a whole lot of difference to be seen for the upgrade - I think the lower spec model has been dropped and a new one, the Namsan, has been added to the top. We're getting around 280 - 300 miles of range. And it's everything that the review says. Boring but practical things like boot capacity, sound system quality,, visibility etc, all get a thumbs up from me too.

8:25 yeah that's a very basic test I always do when evaluating a car's infotainment. I reach for some of the primary buttons and see if my shoulder leaves the seat back. If my shoulder does, the screen is too far away. this actually leads to some really interesting ergonomic results. Ford for example tends to pass with flying colors, sometimes even having my elbow significantly bent. Toyota on the other hand is all over the place, with the Camry just barely failing. which was especially annoying with it's touch screen volume controls.

My Suzuki fails your test. But to pass will mean a smaller, "less roomy" cabin.

Since when can the Ioniq 5 be charged with 350 kw? Isn't it more like 180 or 220 kW depending on the battery size?

If it weren't for the fact that you're getting a 5 kWh larger battery for cheaper with a nearly identical Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5 would probably be the best car on the market now. As it stands, the slightly sportier but less comfortable EV6 swoops that title for me.

@@drogba8306 EV6 LR RWD starts at 45,300€, Ioniq 5 LR RWD at 45,000€. So yes, technically, Kia is more expensive. But it's better equipped in its base model. And it was 44,200€ last I checked, apparently it became more expensive recently. A few weeks ago, EV6 was definitely cheaper than Ioniq 5.
