At last, it’s the Tesla Model Y. You lucky Americans have been able to buy one of these for a couple of years, but only now has Tesla finally managed to get its taller, crossover sibling to the rapid-selling Model 3 into Europe. Must’ve been a heck of a queue at passport control. The Model Y’s arrived as Europe’s old guard has gone electric crossover crazy, but Tesla’s not-so-secret weapons against Audi, Mercedes and BMW are of course a giant touchscreen crammed with games and gimmicks, huge interior space and foolproof Supercharging - as well as strong range and swift performance. Can the Model Y hope to live up to its massive hype? Top Gear Magazine's Ollie Kew has the answers in this thorough new Tesla review.

Did you know for every solar panel or every EV you have to scrape an acre of earth away to extract the rare earth elements to create said products? Once those said products are used up you are left with a very hazardous waste that has no use on our planet same as used fuel rods left over from a nuclear power plant. It cost 5 times to recycle a battery of any type than it does to just make a new one. #truestory

If you filmed the video a few months ago it’s already outdated. Check the news Top Gear, there are some changes coming to the Model Y’s that will be delivered to the UK. Bigger 82 kWh battery, new AMD computer chip (faster), double glazed windows front and back, etc. If you release a video a few days before the actual deliveries start with outdated info is not very cleaver from Top Gear and will confuse people.

Very few reviewers mention that the reason the nose of the 3/Y looks a bit funny is because they have basically the lowest aerodynamic drag in the world (for cars of their class). What people see as bad design from an aesthetic point of view is actually fantastic design from an efficiency/range point of view.

Well cars like the Mercedes CLA (same price range) or EQS (expensive) have more "designed" fronts and still have better aerodynamic drag than current Teslas. If they look "good" or "bad" is always debatable as it's super subjective and different for everybody, but it shows that "more" is definetly possible without losing efficiency, and that Teslas way is not the only or the "best" way.

Model Y with 19-inch wheels is still quite bumpy at the factory recommended pressures (42 psi). It's a suspension issue, less of a tire issue. The Performance models are downright punishing with the lower, firmer springs and 21s.

@BizzMRK
@BizzMRK 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronsanchezz this stiff suspension actually reduce safety and stability as shown in several tests. It has nothing to do with a sport suspension because the stock one simply cant react fast enough to do any work. Aftermarket suspensions like the KW V3 for example offer a smoother and yet more stable and safer drive. They even reduce the breaking distance because the car does not lean forward as much as with the stock suspension, thus increasing grip. The rear end of the car also becomes much more stable which tends to wobble on the stock suspension during sudden maneuvers, granted it usually catches itself pretty quickly once it gets grip again. Still, with a aftermarket suspension wheels of Teslas are glued to the road and you can take corners much faster, which is why I am swapping the stock one on mine after I take delivery later this month.

Not a bad review. My biggest disappointment watching reviews is when the reviewer does not thoroughly know the car, as in this case. I've found that in general the people who don't like Teslas don't fully know them. I was a little put off by the front end appearance of the Models 3 and Y at first, but it's a "form follows function" design done very well. I now find this car very attractive in it's own way and prefer its design over cars like the ID4, Mustang and Ioniq 5. I find it has a very utilitarian appeal for me. I have reserved a Model Y because for me it will be more practical than the smaller, lower Model 3. i've driven the Model Y with the 19" and 20" wheels. The ride is noticeably better with the 19" wheels.

As far as the controls and touchscreen, almost all commands can also be initiated by voice commands as well as on the touch screen. For the wipers for example, are automatic wipers that sense when it is raining and turn on automatically. But you can also tap the button on the end of the left stalk and it will give you a quick swipe of wipers plus pop the wiper menu up on the screen. Or you can also just tell it to "turn on the wipers" or "increase wiper speed" or "decrease wiper speed". If you want to open the glove box you can tap it on the menu on the screen in the submenu or you can say "open glove box". You can tell it to turn on the seat heaters or turn them off. Nice detailed review. I own a Model Y and I think he outlines my same pros and cons. For my family, it is indeed the efficient use of space in an EV plus charging infrastructure and technology that makes it work so well for us. I also acknowledge the shortcomings of rough ride, poor rear visibility and maybe not so solid build quality relative to other luxury marques (this is personally less of a problem for me).
@Abebe345

Note that some of the "build quality" in premium names means adding significant weight, look at the I4, which impacts handling, performance, range, baatery size, and cost. Adding air suspension would make a lot of people happy it appears.

That's completely different from Autopilot included with all cars. It's really solid on all highway conditions. He was testing it on a 45" sloped corner meant for 100mph+ testing, that condition doesn't exist on highways. I've had my Model 3 nearly 4 years and 130k km's almost all highway and for years it's been 100% solid no disengagements ever. It's likely a safety feature he's complaining about detecting the high angle of the road in AP to slow it down. Top speed of AP is really generous 150km/h. It auto slows down into corners where it might move out of the lane lines usually not by much.

We've had our YLR here in Norway since August, it came on the very first boat. Compared to our Model S it had one big drawback in winter: In order to be more efficient, Tesla normally uses only the rear motor both for acceleration and regen, this caused a lot of fishtailing on drives up into the Telemark mountains, but now over the last few weeks they have added an undocumented Snow Mode: When it detects that it is very slippery, it starts this mode which will then use front and back motors approximately 50/50, even if that causes a few percent efficiency loss.
@PedroGfin
@PedroGfin 2 жыл бұрын
Model 3 has done this as well for a few weeks now. You can actually hear the front motor working, it causes a faint whine. Sometimes I let the car slip slightly just to turn on the 50/50 mode. 😄

In the model Y you could also use off road mode as this would have given you 50/50 as well plus slip start. Pretty awesome for loose surfaces. Though it is great that it now detects it by itself.

Late last year I test drove the model 3 and a Ford Mach E. I really wanted a non-Tesla, since I have a Model X and thought it would fun to have another brand sitting in the garage next to it. Also, I would have been able to take the Ford home right away, while the Tesla would take about six months. Though after driving the Ford, it goes to show you how used to something you become. When I got in the Ford it just felt like it was from another era. It was built solid, but not as great as the reviews suggested. The screen was laggy and the screen UX looked like it was designed in the late 90s. The rest of the interior was very nice, but conventional. In comparison, my four year old Tesla Model X still felt more modern. The Model 3 was in a different league entirely and, with the white interior, looks like it was designed by Saarinen. When I went to place the order for the 3, I ended up deciding to go with the practicality of the Y. The exterior is not my favorite, but there aren't any fake grilles or vents, and it's a clean purposeful and authentic design. The hatch makes it more useful and the height make it more pleasant driving in NYC traffic. I took delivery two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. The performance on the back roads is outstanding, which is what I appreciated about the Model 3. The double glazed side glass make it much quieter than previous Model 3's I'd been in. Oh, and I found a good trick... if you give the washers stalk a quick jab, the wiper controls automatically pop up on the screen! Makes it much easier if you need to adjust them. I do wish the seat heaters were persistent on the screen, and the section containing the image of the car on the left occupied less space that could be used for the map. Overall though, there is no question why people love these things.

13:09 "A family car should be more comfortable". This is actually answered at 13:40. Without a more expensive high quality adaptive suspension system you can't have both family car comfortable AND twisty road sharp corning handling. One has to give or you split the difference. Most car companies split the difference and have OK handling and OK comfort. Tesla I guess decided to go for handling to compliment its leading performance. With the Model S and X you get both with their adaptive suspension.
