I found hyundai 1.0T 3 Banger is doing much better than others (Ford Puma, Renault Captur) hyundai is much smoother at idle, and it uses chain unlike belts/wet belts Hope it lasts longer than ford/Renault and VW, hadn't experienced VW honestly

Excellent video. one question though, I didn't see how you locked the crank so that you can unbolt the crank pulley bolt. Did you lock the flywheel ? would be great if you could let us know how you locked the crank. Thanks and perfect video for someone interested in doing some repair on the kona.

So there is a locking tool you can get just a generic one what bolts to the timing cover. But in this case I used a snap on 1/2 impact gun to remove

@@owensautotips thank you for your response. That is a lot clearer although I just thought of another question, how did you tighten the crank pulley bolt, they have to be tightened to specific torque setting I imagine that the impact wouldnt be accurate enough, did you use the generic locking tool you mentioned for tightening then ?

Hello, Since my maintenance in July 2023 I have had a strange noise, it seems that the sound comes from the chain tensioner or in the same area. (Engine Code : G3LF, only has 15k Miles). But once the engine is warm, there no noise anymore. The noise itself is not loud, it sounds like a very small steam train. I think that the cause is the viscosity of the oil 0w20. This type of oil is more fluid (less pressure on start) this acts on the oil pump and therefore on the tensioner as long as the engine is cold. I assume that the oil used in the factory is not the same as at the dealership. Do you have an idea ? Thank you.

Most of the Hyundai 3 cylinder chain engines are quite loud on start up. Very normalised within this brand.. But I can confirm we use the same oil as the factory do

@@owensautotips There a normal noise that i know who's coming from the turbo, the noise only appear when you start the engine and this lasts about 5-10 seconds after that the rpms drop to idle @800rpms. But it's a different noise that I was talking about previously and about that my dealership say it's normal for this 3 cylinder, but i'm sure is not.

Hi I have a 69 plate same engine. And it’s doing the same rattling at start up?? Would you say it’s the same regarding the tensioner for chain? Thanks in advance

Hello would be hard to say without an hearing or looking. All the tdgi 3cylinders do rattle on start up. Although if it changes and gets louder then yes it could be the tensioner guide or the chain stretched itself

Thanks for responding, it’s certainly at times a lot louder, sometimes it does it for longer too. I’m under the impression it be the tensioner as seems to be common on these, judging by searching online. I shall try get a video of the noise. Thanks again

@@Remnaldo7 could be the tensioner but this has a tsb for the guide on the tensioner which slaps around causing to much noise

Hi yeah I’ve seen couple times it has a TSB but every time I search my VIN it doesn’t recognise it on Hyundai site

@@Remnaldo7 not sure on the site, pretty sure the site will only bring up recalls and not tsb. Tsb are more of a in-house thing

Hello, thanks for the video. The chain was replaced because of the rattle with the cold start? These engines tend to rattle because of the turbo waste gate shaft, that is making the rattling sound. You can test this by putting your finger on it at cold start while it runs. That sound takes about 30 seconds before stopping. Or perhaps this was an other issue with this engine.

Chain was replaced, but the reason for the rattle on this one is there is a new modified chain guide as the older design wears and causes excessive rattle

Hello friends….. my kona has 8000 miles onky and have chain noise when start…. After 10 seconds disappear also appear in liw speed sometime ehen downgrade gearbox from 3 to2 Do y belive its worth t change??? They change only the guide of chain . Thanks in advance

Most of the 3 cylinder chain engine tend to rattle on cold start. The tensioner is oil fed and takes a couple of seconds for the pressure to tension the chain. Don’t forget to subscribe

@@nikolasmolfetas2789 it could be but I couldn’t say without hearing it. This vehicle had excessive chain rattle even when warm.

I wrote my intial comment before finishing the video, why the chain is being replaced at 19k Miles to begin with ! seems very low for this service !

As said in the video, there was nothing wrong with the chain they will live a long life if services are kept up and maintained. The reason for replacement was the tensioner guide, they have a modified new one as the old one wears and causes an excessive chain rattle. Replaced the chain under good will due to having everything already off

@@owensautotips Owen do you know when they modified the tensioner guide as I have 2019 model very low mileage with occassional rattles mainly after parking up for a few minutes after long run - other than that excellent car. Enjoy you video's been a Hyundai man

@davidrobinson00433 it will be a active tsb for anyone with the issue in a selected vin range/production year. I will check Monday when I’m back at work

@@owensautotips Hi, I would assume picking up a brand new car in 2024 (built in 2023) should have any timing chain/tensioner issues rectified ?! or do i still have to check if the TSB applies to my vin ? Thanks
