One of my favourite things about younger reactors seeing this for the first time is they all freak out at a skull and a guy seemingly hanging himself right at the start and all seem to say "I thought this was a kids movie!" The 80's were a different time
@WolfPlaysGames2
@WolfPlaysGames2 25 күн бұрын
In the 80s, they didn't have the internet where you could look up every detail of whether the movie was 'appropriate' for your kids. Often the rating system was less stringent, too. Even if a movie was R or PG13 (which only started in 1984), we still didn't know if the rating came from sexual content, violence, or just language. All you had was hints from the trailer, so often kids would see things that their parents didn't intend. Kids we're also more jaded. We saw plenty of dead bodies and violence on TV.

Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk, became a lawyer and negotiated the contract for Ke Huy Quan‘s Academy Award winning role in „Everything Everywhere All At Once“, which is why Ke thanked him in his acceptance speech, and I believe he ended with „Goonies never die“. Most of the child actors seem to have stayed in contact and were very happy for him winning. Ke‘s parents didn‘t allow him to swear, which is why he says „holy S-H-I-T“. The dead body was one of Steven Spielberg‘s go-to stuntmen, and can be seen, e.g., in E.T. when the kids on bikes drive over the police car. The audio commentary on the DVD is very interesting, because it occasionally shows the actors together with the director, and they really managed to get all the former child actors together, but Sean Astin had to leave early. Someone mocked the special effects of Mikey lining up the doubloon with the landscape: „Mr. Donner you mad Superman fly, what‘s up with this bluescreen?“

That was known as Bigfoot and the Hendersons in the UK, which is ironic as it is usually European movies that get a dumbed-down name for their US release. On top of the irony it was also a silly move for the distributor since back in the 80's a bigfoot wasn't a very well known mythical creature outside of North America so the title went from "Hmm, I wonder who or what this Harry thing on the cover is?" to "What the fuck is a bigfoot? and am I supposed to know?"

@@carlossaraiva8213 The aesthetic of season 1 came directly from this and from Stephen King's It. The 80s kids on bikes, doing adventure stuff. They were probably thinking about the bike chase in ET as well. I'm on your side, though. Stranger Things is great. But they do deliberately reference 80s movies. There were Easter eggs that people were making videos about for years. It was part of the excitement for a while.

They built the pirate ship for real, and the reactions of the kids when they see it are genuine. After the movie was finished, they offered the ship to anyone who could take it, but nobody wanted it, or could house it, so it was eventually destroyed. When Sloth rips off his shirt to reveal the Superman T-shirt, the music that plays, is the theme to the 1978 Superman movie, also directed by Richard Donner. There are a bunch of deleted scenes and story elements. When they're all on the beach, Data says that the octopus was really scary. That's one of the deleted scenes.

The rule of thumb - if you want to keep yours - is not to touch dynamite, like ever. The nitroglycerine in it becomes unstable when improperly stored. The brother of the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, died in an explosion in Stockholm along with others, involving nitroglycerine. Old dynamite can go off from fire or impact. In old comedies all explosives were marked TNT, whether it was actual dynamite, TNT or black powder but real TNT is actually more stable than the other two, and it has to be properly detonated before going off. Safer, in a way. The old film 'Wages of Fear' and the 1970s remake 'Sorcerer' with Roy Scheider are nail-biting thrillers with the theme of handling explosives.

You watched another great one from my childhood, Addie. Glad you had so much fun with it! Just to let you know about the pirate ship: We saw it drifting out to sea at movie's end, but it didn't actually stay out there. I haven't read it personally, but according to Wiki, the novelization of the film goes into more detail about the aftermath of the Goonies' adventures. Because it was a danger to commercial shipping, Willy's ship was eventually brought to shore by the U.S. authorities -- along with all the treasure on board. And from that point on, the Goonies' happy ending got even happier, if you can believe it!

My grandparents took me to see this in the theater and everyone had an awesome time with it! I've always wanted a Part 2 to this film where the grown up actors return to their roles and they can go after the pirate ship that sailed away where they run into all new challenges as they come back together after having drifted apart for decades. This film is such a fantastic kids adventure movie that it deserves a part two.

Following filming, Richard Donner planned to take a well earned vacation at his home in Hawaii. Little did he know, the kids all flew out there ahead of his arrival…..& promptly emptied their suitcase out all over his house 😂 😂😂 Yes, it was Joe Pantoliano who played Cypher in The Matrix. Astoria was also the location for another awesome film; Kindergarten Cop. The school can be seen in several shot of The Goonies. Also, back in 2020 Josh Gad reunited the cast of The Goonies as part of his charity podcast…..it’s well worth a watch.

As someone that was a kid throughout the 80's (8 to 18) this was and still is a favourite that I've watched so many times and remain entertained by it. Of course the truffle shuffle is often remembered by many, but as a kid, who didn't want to go on an adventure and find pirate treasure. As for the cast, many of them went on to have pretty successful careers. As a follow on, I'd thoroughly recommend Parenthood, which stars Martha Plimpton alongside Keanu Reeves and Steve Martin.
