With our research in harsh vocals and distortions well underway, I wanted to dive right back into Slipknot due to my fascination with the seemless ease Corey Taylor employs when code switching between harsh and cleans. What better way than to dive back into their back catalogue with your top requested video "The Devil In I", and I couldn't be more disgusted. Thanks, Maggots!

Hello lovelies! I know there was a recent FTC settlement with BetterHelp in regards to patients' data being used for advertising purposes between 2017 and 2020. I have had discussions with the BetterHelp teams, and it’s been relayed that at no time have any members’ names or clinical data from therapy sessions ever been shared with any advertisers, publishers, social media platforms or any other similar third parties. You can read this in more detail in their Privacy Policy here: www.betterhelp.com/your-questions-answered/ Additionally, since the settlement they have been certified by HITRUST, which is an industry-recognized gold standard for providing the highest level of information protection. It is one of the most recognized data security certification programs in the health industry. I would never promote a product I didn’t deeply believe in, and BetterHelp is a service that helps some of us find the therapists we may need to help us through those dark times, or prevent dark times. If you’d like to know more, let’s engage here in this comment thread!

The company is using legal speak to sidestep critique. It, by the FTC's report on the matter, disclosed user's email address, IP address, and health questionnaire's with large advertising agencies. While not directly showing names many user's names are in their email address. As for the second one I don't know what constitutes as healthcare info by their definition but a health questionnaire would, at least for me, fall under that banner of private medical info. While the HITRUST certification does help credibility I still have a hard time trusting a company that has in the past had such a lapse in judgement to sell user health questionnaire's to Facebook. In a country where federal fines are considered an operating cost in the same way that bribing politicians are, I just don't trust a publicly owned for profit company to have access to information of such importance. That being said I don't fault you for taking the ad. My distrust of corporations is systemic and so I am deeply distrustful of publicly traded companies (and private ones that are extremely massive), but that is my opinion. I could see how increasing access to therapy would be a worthy cause in most peoples eyes and with a HITRUST certification I completely understand taking it, I personally just wouldn't want to take the risk if something like that happened in the past.

The band suffered losses, introduced new members, told a story passing the baton over from one version of the band to another, new masks, killed off their old imagery (graphically) using their own fears of 'worst ways to die'. Epic.

A couple other videos that are a must see, the Guitar World Studios video of Corey performing "Through Glass" solo/acoustic and "Black Eyes Blue" acoustic and live for SiriusXM Octane Home Invasion Festival. Thank you for educating us all and opening a window that lets us see and hear metal in a totally different way. seems like the title of the song is about fighting against that side we all have that we can't stand or hate. mine has always been with "fight or flight syndrome". particularly the fight side of it. it is difficult for me to lose my temper but once i do, i am no longer human. there is no thought or memory during that time. i go purely on animal instinct in which i have no way of controlling what i do. i actually fear what i may do during one of those times that i have no control over what i'm doing. thankfully, i have never caused more than minor injuries. i have no memory of any of those episodes other than what i have been told afterwards. it is one of the reasons i live alone.

Great video as usual :) I particularly enjoyed the part where you discuss mixing, and I have a somewhat unusual recommendation for you! As you were talking about what makes a mix good, I found myself thinking about who I consider to be the absolute best musicians in the industry, when it comes to mixing specifically. Now the thing is that they make electronic instrumental music, so it doesn't really fit that well on a vocal coach channel, but I would really love to see you breakdown their compositions from a vocalist standpoint. Because although they don't use actual voices, they still create some of the most musically interesting compositions I have ever heard. Their sound design and mixing is incredibly meticulous, and I would absolutely recommend you give them a listen! I would be very interested to hear your analysis on their track "Voices of Dissent", as I think it is one of their more rythmically and melodically interesting tracks. Although I understand completely if such a video doesn't really fit at all with your channel, I really enjoy your analysis of not just the vocals in every track but at the bigger sonic picture as a whole! And in my opinion, KOAN Sound paints the best sonic pictures in the business :D

Glad you noticed the differences in the ears as well. Simply because of how many people/instruments are in the band slipknot tend to always focus the left ear more on the clean sounds and the right ear on the distortion. This also helps you hear each sound a bit better on top of the additional feelings it gives.

There are new masks for every new album. This video represents the death and rebirth of each band member/character and the arrival of 2 new members then: the bassist and the drummer. It’s like a rite of passage, like the phoenix metaphor, except, as a metal band, they stressed on the death part for the disturbing effect of the visuals. Great video and great concept. By the way, check out their current new drummer, Eloy. He’s a beast.

With all the times Elizabeth has covered Slipknot (apparently heeding her followers' recommendations), I'm pretty flabbergasted that she has yet to do any of the songs from the band's prime era, their first two albums, before Corey blew out his screaming voice. If she thinks she's heard his harshes, but hasn't listened to anything off of Iowa or the self-titled album, then she hasn't heard anything... His voice became a dry desert compared to the beast it was on those albums, likely because he didn't treat it well during that time, but boy did it give us some gnarly performances. It's gotten a little better again in recent years, but I reckon likely won't ever be quite like those old screams again. I'd suggest "Wait and Bleed", the song that really kicked off their stardom, but it's so short. She can't do something like "Surfacing" because half of the video would be silent from all the censoring. Perhaps "Eyeless" for its raw intensity... or how about "Purity", with it's mix of vocal techniques and haunting chorus cleans? Anything from those first two albums would be great to see her react to, though, even though most of the choices would likely be quiet intense (and in some cases downright scary) for someone of her sensibilities. Either way, it'd make for great entertainment! 🤣

I remember in your tea time interview with Alissa White-Gluz how she too talked about how it's easier for her to switch between harsh and clean vocals during a song precisely because they use different muscles within the throat. She doesn't do this nearly at all in her new band: Arch Enemy, though 1 of the 2 times she did do so, the song Reason to Believe, actually fits perfectly with your focus on mental health, and is a great song in its own right for you to cover on the channel. Though it's in her work with her previous band: The Agonist, where she switched between harsh and clean vocals a lot in nearly(if not) every song. Some song recommendations from the Alissa era of The Agonist are: Business Suits and Combat Boots, Thank You, Pain, Panophobia and Rise and Fall. You can also check their newer material with their new vocalist, as they maintained their style of switching between harsh and clean vocals.

When you talked about communicating immotion in a simple way with a limited range, it reminded me of this song. (You'll get yours aplenty by Blaze Foley) the song is only 2 minutes long but there's a whole world of immotion and meaning to be found in some simple observations with the right inflection and a guitar. The best way that I can think to describe. It is soul crushingly simple for those who have eyes to see. Thanks for another great analysis.
