Thinking of Hayley's speech talking about how when they came around, emo / punk rock wasn't a safe space for people who were different. Media making "female-fronted band" seem like a genre. Media and bands not taking them seriously at all because Hayley was a young woman and the band did shit differently. Same thing with My Chemical Romance. When they came around and they embraced androgyny + non-conformity, and stood up for women, poc and queer people (where barely anybody else was doing this btw), a HUGE amount of people thought of them as a joke. Bands, media and punk enjoyers alike. People always forget they weren't always this celebrated in the scene. To a lot of people they were just seen as an annoying, make up-wearing sissy band that were full of shit. Stuff like Warped 2004 comes to mind when the creator of Warped purposely made MCR play back to back with a bigoted band, and that band spent half of their set calling Gerard homophobic slurs and other disgusting ass shit. Forums filled with people backing that band's statement. This is another reason why I think MCR made that statement at WWWY. Back during the Revenge era they were called slurs and were treated like dog shit from all around, and now suddenly it's become very profitable and demanded? Of course they would choose to take the piss. It was funny as hell. That's why I'm also happy as hell that bands like them have a camaraderie. Hayley talking about how when they were just a tiny little band during Warped 2005 nobody really paid attention to, Gerard took the time to watch their full set :)
@bree8762
@bree8762 Жыл бұрын
All of this 👏 MCR were HATED in the early 2000’s. Like, it was not cool to admit you liked them. Gerard would speak openly onstage in support of the female, gay and trans kids who were fans of theirs and it always pissed off the types of dudes who came to those shows to be toxic and aggressive. They would routinely be called homophobic slurs and get all kinds of shit thrown at them, and they never backed down (if anything, it only made them bolder onstage). There are people now who have been wearing their shirts and who know all the words to their songs and have been freaking out about getting tickets to their reunion tour who I know for a fact talked a lot of shit about them back in the day.

@@entropyfan5714 oh for sure, and as a girl who was very conscious of social self-preservation within those types of scenes, I get why she was, it only makes sense to laugh along with “the boys” lest you’re singled out next. I’m old and don’t give a fuck anymore now, but I’d hope goth and punk kids are more socially conscious and accepting these days than they were back when I was a teenager, esp because it seems like ‘emo’ is no longer a dirty word (I know MCR aren’t, but that’s how many of their fans classify themselves).

I know it's not exactly the same, but this I think is how I felt after seeing MCR on their reunion a couple months ago. My best friend and I went together. It was a show that wasn't supposed to exist since it was added after COVID. I was going with a ticket that wasn't supposed to be mine, but now was mine. And all with one of my favorite people- both of us musicians, both of us introduced to MCR well after their breakup. We screamed our hearts out to songs that saved us, saved our friends, saved our friendship. We made a little mosh in the stands, pumped our fists to the anthems, and left not really knowing what we were feeling. Like. Of course, it was an incredible show. Of course, it was emotional. But I think (at least for me), it set me up to go towards the world now. Not "move on" per se, but now I feel like I'm finally ready to go and claim my own place in music. Get involved with my own local, small scene (which I'm discovering is actually like. Pretty expansive). I'm ready to share my own songs that (being honest) I stewed in alone for way too long before publishing. That show happened for me, not to pull me back, but push me forward.

The speech at the end was amazing!! As a "younger" fan of emo it often feels slightly disheartening when those older than me try to gatekeep because "they are the ones truly experiencing the nostalgia", even though most of these bands I've been listening to my entire life due to being exposed to it by my parents, I was just younger when I was having those first experiences, ya know? So it feels really nice to hear someone say that we need to make room for more people, young or old. Make emo the safe space that Haley was talking about in her speech

As a 29 year old "old" emo, I'd like to say on behalf of the rest of us - F*CK those guys. This shit is supposed to be all about inclusivity. I think one big difference between "punk" and "emo" is that punk wasn't as much about that, as you were called a poser if you didn't know this about that, or dressed a certain way. With emo music, a lot of that goes out the window. You should be able to be yourself. No matter what you look like, your gender, race, how you dress, where you come from, or how old you are. I'd love to run into some of you guys to show you all the "older" emo shit I used to listen to when I was your age, and you could get me hip on some of the new shit. Right?? Maybe I'm reading into it too much (that's the emo in me 😂) and some people are just straight up bitter. Either way- much love to you. 🖤 You're always welcome, period.

Hayley’s speech really meant a lot to me. I remember being made fun of for listening to this kind of music growing up. The topics of mental health were very taboo, and I felt like I had nowhere to belong. And then I remember all that changed my first Warped Tour. I finally found a community of people who shared the same pains I was going through, who liked the same music I was listening to, and who finally found a sense of home like I did. Things weren’t always like this, and I’m incredibly proud of the progression. I am ecstatic to see more POC in the scene, mental health being a subject that many people consider and talk about nowadays, and acceptance and awareness for those in the LGBTQ+ communities. This is something we can’t take for granted and must champion for the next generation. I’m so excited for the direction we’re heading in.

Before WWWY, I've neverrrr been able to get tickets to paramore. I never made it to presale, and when I did get to the site on time, all of the floor tickets were always sold out. When this was announced, me and my best friend said "hell yeah let's do this!" we knew we were going to go for GA+ tickets, and we were ready on that morning. I was literally in a zoom class and had 3 or 4 browsers open refreshing. When I didn't get the tickets, and saw the sold out tweet for Saturday I was crying. Paramore has always been there for me, after so many years of trying for tickets and never getting any, I had started to give up on ever seeing them live, and just appreciating that I had them in the first place. But this festival was my chance. I had this feeling that this was going to happen. I may never win anything, but that I was going to get that ticket, and see Paramore. I was refreshing out of denial, and then suddenly the site was working, and I was paying for 2 tickets. My friend was paying for 2 as well because we were afraid something would happen. By the time we had out tickets, the tweet came out saying that it was for Sunday, a second day they had just announced. I thought that was weird, but I was grateful because it was the same lineup. People were so negative about it. "Emo Fyrefest" And then we paid off the tickets. Got our wristbands, our hotel f-ed up and had to give us a different room, but we were there. I hurt my ankle, so I limped the whole weekend. Then the winds.. my friends were kind of being dicks about it. They didn't get that there were people like me who would be crying and broken over not getting to see their favorite band. I felt for them man. If I had gotten the Saturday ticket, that would have been me too. But Sunday finally came around, I lost my friends halfway through because they got way too drunk, so it was just me, in the GA pit, waiting for Paramore. I cried through almost every song. Screamed, made friends around me, we cried and danced together. Hayley wasn't an ant, I was there, and I had pictures/videos. I can still close my eyes while listening to the set and remember what I was seeing. I fucking love Paramore so muuuch. I can't say enough how much it meant to see them live like that.

this may be a pretty weird place to say something like this, but for personal reasons I was feeling kinda bittersweet about not being able to go Saturday like I had planned. I was there with some real corny family (won't go into details), and in retrospect I really kinda felt like, if I ended up going, I would've had this constant feeling of being under the shadow of people who I genuinely dislike, who didn't enjoy this kind of music anyway, and who have done some real rough stuff to me. Instead, I got to spend most of the day alone in a hotel room, blasting the music I wanted to while they went out to look around Vegas. Even if I was super alone at that point, it felt way more real and personal than the festival itself would've been given the circumstances. Ik this is just my personal experience and not everyone else got anything positive out of the cancellation, but I'm super happy that I was able to make something work that, more than likely, would have topped the festival experience had it happened normally.

Loved it! Great work, and at the end, I had a tear in my eye, wether it is seeing my brother having fun, or maybe the music, IDK, but you get it! I will be honest, I do not align with EMO sub culture, or that sphere at all, I come from a very different aspect, culture, you name it. Yet, I can relate to what is being said, because it brought the feelings that I had when I went to my first AnimeCon (SakuraCon) back I 2017. I had the time of my life, and I did it, because at the time I was sick, and I was told that I would be dead (no need be sad, I'm not and did arise from that step back or fall pit). So I wanted to do something I always wanted to do, and I did, and it is crazy how a person can make things they never thought it would become possible when they are told, they are about to leave earth. With that context in mind, I felt I belong after I went there, and I can understand what being part of something means. I must admit, I'm not a fan of the whole create space thing, I think we should just have one space for everyone, and "create" space for people of color, because Nate the WHITE, is not stopping me from buying a ticket and being there, if I wanted to, so it is time to move on, when it comes to that aspect, YET!! I'm glad you had fun, and many others did as well, and I really liked that guy whom was dancing around the end, with the pink pijamas, or jeans, IDK, this is all new to me, but it is a welcoming new. Growing up as a bipoc emo/alt kid was rough back in the early to mid oughts. I really shed a tear with Hayleys speech, because it’s so necessary to realize that emo included more than just a white skater dude. It was an amazing subculture for anyone who felt misunderstood.. specially for bipoc communities like us.

I was supposed to go see MCR at music midtown in ATL but it got cancelled due to some law abt conceal and carry that got passed in Georgia, potentially something that could’ve been a major threat to the safety of festival goers. As someone who lived in Las Vegas for 6 years, the wind is no joke sometimes. Especially when you hit around September-ish because that's when it's been dry as shit all summer. Have videos still of being at work and us having to close up and shut down because of dust storms and shit. Oh, and Freemont is always the place. Fuck the main strip lol

I had tickets for the first Saturday. Fortunately, I live in Las Vegas, and have a cool older sister that snatched new tickets. We went to the second Saturday since we were refunded. I had a great time. I had been working out for the past year preparing for the event, and all that was hurting by the end of the day were my feet which can’t be helped since I stood and walked on them for 14 hours LMFAO.

Am I the only one who thinks it makes sense as to how Travis Scott did not hear or see what was going on, based on experience. In ear monitors, bright stage lights and the fact that dude could have myopia. Security and the venue coordinators was in charge for the loss of life that occurred, if they wanted to this easily could have turned into a terrorist attack. Artists have stopped concerts before, however in many if not all of these it is during the day, they do not have in their in ear monitors, or it is at night however the size of the crowd is no where near the scale that TS's concert was, or there was an emergency solution already in plan on how to handle it. Security that let people jump over fences without much reprimand, crowd control and the fact that people that guard the stage were interacting with the fans and did nothing. The people that let the ambulance in should have called and gotten into contact with the back stage crew so that the music should have been stopped and Travis be cued in via the in ear pieces by stopping the IEM mix flow or stop the music of the the entire concernt have someone come out to Travis and explain the situation, so that he could broadcast it to the audience. Or even more simply, stop the music have the backstage crew explain from backstage the instructions they should have recieved from the emergency coordinators. A stage that size, speakers that size, lights that bright, IEM's etc, any person who has never actually experienced any of these will have the opinion that xyz could obviously hear and see what was going on clearly. Just my opinion as someone who has experienced the conditions live performers do, also as someone who experienced being on stage of that scale without the IEM's, the music is blaringly loud and you can not differentiate screams of a concert of that scale.
@NateIsLame
@NateIsLame Жыл бұрын
I’ve also been in live settings both backstage, in the audience, and onstage with IEMs and tons of people. No excuse for Travis Scott. I see My Chemical Romance shut stuff down and address issues in the back of crowded music festivals.
@pearlcnrd
@pearlcnrd Жыл бұрын
@@NateIsLame I'm honestly curious as to what you think he could have done(genuine question we both have experience on stage with tech in and tech out on stages the size he performed at) I couldn't hear a thing with the IEM's in or out, or see a thing (I have myopia and astigmatism so contacts are very irritating) even with no IEM's I could not hear a thing they had to use a mic from backstage in the lighting room to communicate with us on stage when we were dancing. ^ We had the opportunity to do 2 proper rehearsals during the day and in the evening and it was a stark difference. I still do not see how Travis without warning from the backstage crew could have heard people screaming with or without the IEM's. Even in theatres you can not hear you see a thing in the crowd, and during rehearsal they communicate with a mic, however since the gap for seating in theatres and concert venues is completely different I could understand if it was held at the theatre.

“bring out the rapist!!” Fucking threw 😂😂😂 This was such a good video! Your speech at the end made me cry!! I just wanted to say that I was fortunate enough to go to Saturday October 29 with a GA ticket! I flew to Vegas from Edmonton , Alberta & was there for 6 days, including Halloween! & all the kinks were worked out by then! We lined up at 9, ran straight to merch, only waited for maybe half an hour for band & then waited for 5 more for WWWY merch, I had a locker reserved so we went & threw our merch in there, got some food, saw all the bands we wanted.. It was SUPER warm. Pale people getting sunburned left & right. Sounds like our day was a little more stinky than yours. I’m sure you heard about Gerard Way’s more Hilter-esque costume that day. I however did not find out about the GA pit until after the whole thing was over & everyone started leaving & I saw the separate fenced off area! So that was a bummer. But I was absolutely “turnt” on those Angst drinks so I wasn’t too bummed. MCR & Paramore FORMED my early teenage years & I will be praying for P@TD & FOB for 2024 headliners 🙏🏼 Edit: We also went super skeptical about it being too good to be true & went with the mentality that if it did get cancelled or fall through, it was just gonna be 6 days of Halloween in Vegas. If you prepare for disappointment, you won’t be disappointed. But if there is no disappointment, you will be extremely pleased.
